  • East Oakland Rising and Jail House Lawyer

We talk to filmmaker Cheo Tyehimba Taylor about his new film East Oakland Rising. This documentary highlights the stories of everyday people coming together to build relationships and trust, knowledge and understanding, and collective determination to fight environmental racism, unfair housing policies, and gentrification in East Oakland, CA, one of the last predominantly-African American communities left in the city. It showcases a ten-year community-organizing journey and offers a valuable blueprint for how to build power and policy wins for the next generation.

  • The Study: The History of Black August

We speak with organizers Monifa Bandele and Kali Akuno about the history and purpose of Black August.

Black August originated in the concentration camps (prisons) of California in 1979 and its’ roots come from that history of resistance by Black/New African/African brothers in those prisons. It’s original and unchanging purpose is to: Honor and commemorate the lives and deaths of several fallen Freedom Fighters.

Monifa Bandele is the Vice President & Chief Partnership and Equity Officer at MomsRising.org. She has more than a decade of experience in policy analysis, communications, civic engagement organizing, and project management working with groups like the Brennan Center for Justice, Peoples Hurricane Relief Fund, and the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation. At MomsRising.org she manages the food justice campaign, helping to successfully increase children’s access to healthy food and working to stem junk food marketing. Forbes has named MomsRising.org one of the top websites for women four years in a row. During her tenure at the Brennan Center as national field director for the Right to Vote Campaign, the coalition successfully changed laws in five state expanding the franchise to more that 250,000 formerly incarcerated people.

Kali Akuno is a co-founder and co-director of Cooperation Jackson and co-editor of Jackson Rising: the struggle for economic democracy and black self-determination in Jackson, Mississippi. Kali served as the Director of Special Projects and External Funding in the Mayoral Administration of the late Chokwe Lumumba of Jackson, MS. His focus in this role was supporting cooperative development, the introduction of eco-friendly and carbon reduction methods of operation, and the promotion of human rights and international relations for the city.

  • Summer Fund Drive Special Programming: The History of Black Women in The US
We dig in the vault to uncover a conversation with Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross discussing their book, A Black Women’s History of the United States.

Reaching from the year 1600 to the present day, A Black Women’s History of the United States – written by renowned authors and historians Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross – provides a necessary, long-awaited re-centering of American history from the perspective of all those folks who have been left out of our history books.  Wide-ranging and inclusive, this book examines a diversity of Black women, including cisgender and transgender women, rich and poor, educated and uneducated,  reformers, enslaved women, artists, activists, imprisoned women leaders, and everyday people. A critical survey of their complex legacy, A Black Women’s History of the United States considers not only the exploitation and victimization of Black Women, but also their undeniable and substantial contributions to the country since its inception.

  • Summer Fund Drive Special: Pastor Mike McBride and Dr. Cornel West
We present two in-depth interviews with noted thinkers and radical visionaries Pastor Mike McBride and Dr. Cornel West.
The speech by Pastor Mike McBride was given the day the DA in Louisville Kentucky announced the Grand Jury ruling around the Breanna Taylor case.  Pastor Mike was not only speaking about the case but talking directly to elected officials who refused to pass laws to reign in rogue police. This speech was part of a Facebook live event. Pastor McBride of the Way Church in Berkeley and his Brother Ben McBride have been key national organizers around this case and have been to Louisville for big actions.

Pastor Michael McBride (known as “Pastor Mike”) is a native of San Francisco and has been active in ministry for over 20 years. Pastor McBride’s commitment to holistic ministry can be seen through his leadership roles in both the church and community organizations. A graduate of Duke University’s Divinity School, with a Master of Divinity with an emphasis in Ethics and Public Policy, Pastor McBride founded The Way Christian Center in West Berkeley, where he presently serves as the Lead Pastor.

As racial tension again flares across the country, Dr. Cornel West provides a clear portrait of King as a radical visionary. While King is currently recognized as a major leader in America’s civil rights movement, a transcendent orator and an insistent proponent of nonviolence, few realize how truly radical he was. Dr. Cornel West brilliantly establishes King’s revolutionary Christian vision, seeing him as a passionate democratic socialist, underscoring his profound identification with the poor, his unapologetic opposition to the Vietnam War, to all war, and his crusade against global imperialism.

Dr. Cornel West, unarguably one of America’s most gifted and provocative public intellectuals, has been profoundly influenced by Dr. King. Currently he is a professor of philosophy and Christian practice at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is the author of many books as well as a frequent guest on contemporary forums.

Davey D is the Host of Hard Knock Radio (airing on KPFA 94.1FM weekdays at 4pm). He is also Adjunct Professor in the Afrostudies Dept. at S.F. State University.

  • Summer Fund Drive Special: Andrew Bacevich and Edwidge Danticat

We present two in-depth conversations with noted thinkers Andrew Bacevich and Edwidge Danticat.

Author and academic Andrew Bacevich presents a bold and urgent perspective on how American foreign policy must change in response to the shifting world order of the twenty-first century, from the New York Times’ bestselling author of The Limits of Power and The Age of Illusions. The purpose of U.S. foreign policy has, at least theoretically, been to keep Americans safe. Yet as we confront a radically changed world, it has become indisputably clear that the terms of that policy have failed. Washington’s insistence that a market economy is compatible with the common good, its faith in the idea of the “West” and its “special relationships,” its conviction that global military primacy is the key to a stable and sustainable world order—these have brought endless wars and a succession of moral and material disasters.

Edwidge Danticat, is a Haitian-American novelist and short story writer. Her first novel, Breath, Eyes, Memory, was published in 1994 and went on to become an Oprah’s Book Club selection. Danticat has since written or edited several books and has been the recipient of many awards and honors. In this KPFA event from October 2013 Danticat talks about her novel, “Claire of the Sea Light.”
