Some homeless people with disabilities are finding homes, even in today’s crowded, high-rent housing market.  On Friday, Jan. 18 at 2:30 pm on KPFA, host Adrienne Lauby interviews Butch Cooley and Paul Hamilton of the Leg Up Project in Grand Junction, Colorado.
These two formerly homeless men housed twenty-eight people in three months.  Cooley and Hamilton speak honestly of relating to landlords and drug and alcohol addictions, as well as the pleasure of four walls and a lock on the door.

We also talk to Robert Long and Debbie Robinson of Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (B.O.S.S.), two long-time local homeless advocates. They develop relationships with landlords and currently guarantee homes to anyone with a standard fixed income. Part 3 of the "Homelessness and Disability Series."

Pushing Limits airs on the first, third, and fifth Friday of each month at 2:30 p.m. on KPFA 94.1 fm or KRCF 88.1 fm. Contact us at: (510) 848-6767 ext. 636 or [email protected], or kpfa.org/pushinglimits/

After a disabling motorcycle accident, Dan McMullan lived on the streets for eight years and founded the "Disabled People Outside Project."  Now, with a house, wife and two kids, he’s still an aggressive advocate for East Bay’s homeless people.  Eddie Ytuarte and Adrienne Lauby talk with him about the need, the myths and the solutions. They’ll also look at local issues like the Public Commons Initiative and two hundred thousand dollars recently cut from food programs to fund a recovery program with links to the criminal justice system.

Eddie Ytuarte and Leah Gardner will present a program of music by artists with disabilities ranging from Itzhak Perlman to Django Reinhardt and Paul Robeson.

Contemporary music and culture would not be the same without the contributions of disabled artists and the varied musical expressions they present because of the nature of their disability.

Pushing Limits will offer just a sampling of this broad area of music by disabled musicians–plus listeners are invited to call in and tell us of what musicians they like, or don’t like.
