On this edition of the Talkies. Guest host Max Pringle chats with the author of a new biography of Britain’s wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The book uses new source material to present a fuller picture of one of the 20th Century’s most studied lives. British historian Andrew Roberts got access to previously classified wartime diaries and documents, which had been unavailable to previous biographers.
In the second segment we move from a man who, decades ago, recognized early on the threat posed by extreme right wing movements, to the modern threat of a new far-right populism taking root in countries around the world. Max Pringle spoke with UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Rosenthal. He’s Chair and lead researcher at UC Berkeley’s Centre for Right-Wing Studies. The Centre is hosting the inaugural conference on right wing studies this week. The conference runs today through Saturday. Expert panels will examine the influence of far-right and nativist populist movements around the world, how they relate to movements of the past and what can be done today to confront it.
In the final segment, we’ll switch gears to focus on an effort in the North Bay to set up a community food co-op that would offer locally sourced, healthy and environmentally sustainable food options. The Cultivate Community Food Co-op’s founder Paula Schnazy is our guest.

On today’s Talkies. Guest host Max Pringle speaks with San Francisco Silent Film Festival Artistic Director Anita Monga about the 24th annual Silent Film Festival. It’s slated for May 1-5 at the historic Castro Theater. Films not shown in decades, which have been newly restored, will be shown. Some of the films feature the work of such cinema legends as Buster Keaton, John Ford and Gary Cooper.
Also, in the second half of the show, the co-founder of a Berkeley-based company that provides nearly indestructible footballs for kids living in harsh terrain in the developing world will talk about her organization and its mission. The One World Play Project’s Lisa Tarver will be in conversation with Max Pringle.

On this edition of the Talkies, guest host Max Pringle speaks with author Jane Leavey. She’s a former Washington Post sports writer and author most recently of “The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the world he created.” This biography of arguably the most celebrated figure in the history of American sports uses newly unearthed archive material to give a well-balanced glimpse into the life of a man who redefined the game of baseball, whilst redefining what it meant to be a celebrity at the dawn of the mass media era.

There’s an assault on learning underway, with devastating implications for democracy, and humanity itself. Attacking forces, while directed by the current administration (Betsy DeVos!) and right-wing think tanks, have long been at work, and long been combatted. Henry Reichman tells the story, and calls us to the fight. Hosted by Kris Welch.
