  • October 17, 2017 – Kaiser & UC Healthcare Workers Fight For Safe Staff & Amazon OSHA Whistleblower

WorkWeek looks at the growing attack on healthcare workers from nurses at Kaiser to UC nurses, service and technical workers.

Healthcare workers face massive understaffing, stress and threats against their benefits and conditions.
Protests were held at both Kaiser in San Francisco and UCSF to warn of the growing dangers in healthcare.
First, we hear from the 19,000 nurses at Kaiser who are fighting for a contract and are charging that there are serious problems of staffing at Kaiser hospitals. Kaiser’s membership has increased in California by 600,000 members but the NNU CNA nurses say that there has been no real commensurate increase in staff.
They spoke out at a rally on September 8. On October 12th, UC NNU nurses, AFSCME 3299 and UPTE CWA members protested at the UCSF campus and discussed the staffing issues there as well as the effort by UC Regents and executives to eliminate defined pensions and put workers into a 401k.
Next, WorkWeek looks at the real conditions for workers at the Amazon “fulfillment” warehouses. Jason Storalik was a worker at the Kenosha Wisconsin Amazon warehouse when he began to find serious health and safety problems. We will hear from him about his struggle for health and safety and his retaliation.
Amazon owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos has become one of the largest employers in the country with 400,000 workers most of whom work at the massive warehouses. Last month two workers died in these warehouses. The introduction of automation and technology has speeded up the work of the remaining workers putting them in further danger.
Now with more than 351,000 workers it was one of the largest employers in the country.
Jason Storalik began work at the Kenosha, Wisconsin warehouse in 2015. He began to find serious health and safety violations and brought them to the attention of the management. His complaints were ignored.
On August 15, 2015 the New York Times published an article detailing the serious health and safety problems at the company. On the same day Jason Storalik filed a complaint with OSHA about the failure to remedy health and safety problems. He was later terminated and has been fighting for OSHA to defend him as a whistleblower who was retaliated against. He has discovered that OSHA officials are in collusion with the executives of Amazon to make his complaints disappear. Lets hear from Storalik about his story. We will also hear from Darrell Whitman who was an investigator lawyer at the Whistleblower Protection Program who has been prevented from investigating the retaliation of health and safety whistleblowers.

  • October 10, 2017 – Labor In N. CA Fire & Long Term Care In National Healthcare Bill

WorkWeek looks at the crisis caused by the growing fires in Northern California. Thousands of working people and their families have lost their homes and their livelyhoods as a result of the Sonoma, Napa and Solano county fires. We talk with Jack Buckhorn who is the Executive Director of the North Bay Labor Council. We also talk with Carroll Wills, communication director of California Professional Firefighters Unon. He also discusses the dangers of cancer and other illnesses that firefighters face.

Next, WorkWeek looks at the need for long term care and the protection of homecare workers who take care of our elderly. Long Term Care has been excluded from the Medicare for all bill introduced in the Senate by Bernie Sanders and we talk with Anne Scheetz who is with the Physicians for National Healthcare and Physicians for National Healthcare. We also talk with San Francisco SEIU 2015 homecare worker Bradley Wiedmaier who is also a delegate to the San Francisco Labor Council.
In California, there are 400,000 homecare workers and many do not even get social security if they live with their client or are family members taking care of their family. With an aging population, the issue of bringing homecare workers into a national healthcare system is critical.
There is growing support for national healthcare and single payer. Last month, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced a bill that would expand medicare into a universal healthcare system. It was co-sponsored by 15 Democrats in Congress including Senator Kamala Harris.

They also discuss the concession bargaining and business unionism that dominates the US trade union movement.

We interview Daniel Vila who is a labor organizer in the United States and also has been involved in defending Puerto Rican unions. He also is a host of New York Pacifica WBAI La Voz Latina.

WorkWeek radio hears a report from NNU CNA RN Response Network members Erik Hoagland and Amy Bowen. They are in Texas offering medical care to the people hit by the flood.

Next, WorkWeek looks at the efforts by the Hearst owned San Francisco Chronicle to ban employees including reporters from all political activity not sanctioned by management. We interview Henry Norr who was a tech reporter at the Chronicle and was retaliated against and fired for his political activity. He discusses how the Hearst management uses the ban to target political activists and silence and intimidate CWA Pacific Media Workers journalists.
Last, WorkWeek looks at the failure of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to properly monitor and control the toxins and chemicals that are being sent into the air. We interview former Cal-OSHA Medical Director Dr. Larry Rose. We also look at the executive management of the agency’s retaliation against whistleblowers BAAQMD Michael Bachmann who along with Sara Steele were in charge of protecting the pollution control records and documents. They were bullied and fired by the BAAQMD executives when they protested that legal and other critical documents were being illegally destroyed by the District. We talk with their lawyer Gary Williams who discusses the importance of the case to whistleblowers and the public.
