Built as a Kirkbride-style hospital meant to heal, the asylum quickly became overwhelmed by overcrowding, neglect, and brutal treatment methods. From its Civil War beginnings and a gold raid that helped shape the future state of West Virginia, to exploding patient populations, questionable admissions, and experimental medical procedures like insulin shock therapy, electroshock, wet packing, and lobotomies, this place represents one of the darkest eras of mental health care in America. Thousands lived, suffered, and died within its walls—many buried anonymously on the grounds, their names lost to history.

For part one of this two-part episode, we focus on the asylum’s disturbing history and legacy. In part two, we’re joined by Jenni—who listeners may remember from our Pennhurst episodes last year—who has personally visited Trans-Allegheny and shares her firsthand experiences and encounters inside the building.

We’re officially halfway through Paranuary, and things are getting weird. This episode, Corey brings in former co-worker Brian H, who shares a lifetime of chilling paranormal experiences—many involving his own family.

Brian recounts how all of his kids, at the age of five, experienced the same unsettling encounter: a shadow figure—possibly the Hat Man—tickling their feet while they lay in bed. Years later, the activity didn’t stop. At his current home, Brian describes a shadowy presence that appears in the neighborhood every fall, an entity multiple neighbors have also reported seeing.

He also dives into the strange history of a nearby house that went through several owners over the nearly two decades Brian lived nearby. While house-sitting and taking care of the dogs at that very home, Brian experienced something that made him question everything—pillows suddenly flew off the couch with no explanation.
