We always say look back to learn – look forward to plan – and make sure that right now you are in the moment.

It is the only way to operate if you want to be a top performer.

There is no question you need to learn and learning how to learn from your experiences, both good and bad, may be one of the greatest skills you can posses.

You also have to plan.

Being able to understand where you are currently at and where you want to go is another invaluable skill and being able to lay out clear and concise strategy for getting from point a to point B is something that can set you apart.

We can get so caught up focusing on outcomes and the what ifs of performance that it is easy to lose sight what is really important in practice and competition – The Process.

It’s the process that will ultimately lead you to success.

Setting you or your athletes up for the long haul should be a top priority in every program and you have more influence on this than you might think.

It all starts with planning, I’ll explain.

And our brain’s love patterns. Patterns help us do whatever it is we do and the most simple and powerful patterns come in Three’s.

There is something powerful about the number 3. It’s a human thing.

I’ll show you how we use the power of three’s to help our athlete’s achieve in sport.

There is a changing of the guard in professional sport we’ll have a look at the very last of the 70”s kids.

At his top speed a certain National league hockey player would not be able to skate through a school zone without getting a speeding ticket…!

Hockey is the fastest show on ice, well the Fastest team show on ice anyway. I mean you have events like ice sailing, ice ski doo racing, even ice motor bike ice racing but in terms of human powered sport, hockey is fast & furious!!

The only other human powered ice sport that we might talk about is Speed Skating where the top competition speeds reach upwards of 34 mph /54.8kph.

This week on Krush Performance we look at performance in the game of Hockey and coming off our Tyranny of Talent show:

We take a quick look at how Late Developers

have become some of the Best Athletes to Ever Play Sports.

I share some great stories from the trenches as I worked with elite hockey players.

· We break down the hockey stride.

The Tyranny of Talent: How it Compels and Limits Athletic Achievement – AND Why We Should Ignore It.

Talent, it is the currency that drives the world of sport from the grassroot entry levels right up to professional and elite world class sport.

However, could it be that what we do not know and understand about Talent, Talent Identification and Talent Development is the very thing that is holding us back from achieving true top performance?

There is plenty of evidence indicating that this is indeed the case.

If we dig into the current research surrounding “TALENT” it is quite evident that our lack of understanding in the areas of talent ID, talent development and “TALENT” itself may be the very thing that is holding us back from achieving true Talent Development.

It is one of the Greatest Conundrums in Sport Today.

If we are going to move sport and human performance forward:

· We need to better understand what talent is and how to address it with in our sporting systems.

· We need to better understand Talent Identification and the powerful influence (both positive and negative) it has on the process of athlete and player development. During an athlete’s development when does talent ID even make sense. Currently we are horrific at predicting future performance based on current performance.

· And we need to better understand the process of athlete and player development. It’s a long game with countless variables.

And, I have a strong feeling it is not about what we should be doing, it is more about what we should stop doing.

A few years back I was invited to lecture and teach coaches and work with athletes in New Zealand.

I had never been to New Zealand before, and I was very excited about this trip for a number of reasons.

I was fired up to check out some of the Lord of the Rings movie locations. I was also really looking forward to working with the coaches and athletes, sharing knowledge on athlete development and player performance but, to be honest with you, I was most excited about a possible visit with the All Blacks.

The All blacks are New Zealand’s National Rugby Union Team & they are touted as one of the most successful sporting organizations in the history of All of Sport and yes, I was lucky enough to spend time with them.

Early vs Late Developers – This is a very misunderstood part of athlete development.

In terms of athlete development and future performance:

Is it better to be an Early Developer OR is it better to be a Late Developer?

The athlete development data tells a very interesting story one group has an advantage and the numbers are massive.

We’ll discuss who makes it to the top levels of sport much more often and I speculate why these athletes wind up with a powerful advantage.

I also wanted to touch on another important topic that has been brought to the forefront of the sporting world by unfortunate circumstance – Aaron Rogers Achillies injury.

There is a lot of talk right now surrounding the Turf vs Natural Grass debate.

A debate that has been going on – well since the invent of artificial turf.

The NFL Players Association has been pushing for all grass fields for some time – their main platform…there are fewer injuries on grass.

Which surface is safer for athletes?

Who has the advantage Early or Late Developers and which surface is safer for sport Turf or Grass?

Perception may very well be one of the most exciting areas for pushing human performance forward.

We have a great understanding of physical preparation for sport. There is not a lot we cannot train. If you want to get faster, stronger, or more powerful… done, done and done. If you want to improve bat speed or club head speed or improve your movement and agility…you got it.

We even have a good idea on how to train and improve your vision, gaze and tracking abilities.

What we do not do very well, what we are just starting to understand is how you perceive your environment and your place in that environment.

There is a new age of athlete development approaching, for too long have we relied on the age-old coach led approach to learning and performance. While there is a place for that style of development, we are about to time warp to new heights of development and performance, and it all lies within the concept of perception, vision and implicit learning.

We lay them all out and discuss each one as we explore my approach and system for athlete programing.
