In the lower 48 states, grizzly bears used to roam across much of the West, but now, they’re confined to areas mostly in Montana and Wyoming. They’re considered endangered. The U.S. government has recently agreed to review their endangered status, due to a controversial lawsuit which ultimately aims to build a plan to eventually bring grizzly bears to more places, including the Sierra Nevada.

Community members gathered at the University of Nevada, Reno on Monday to remember the victims of the Ukraine International Airlines plane crash that took place in Iran earlier this month. The vigil honored the lives lost with poetry, music and solidarity.

The Women’s March was initially a protest against President Donald Trump’s inauguration. But now, organizers in Reno say their goal is to empower women in a variety of ways. KUNR’s Lucia Starbuck talked to activists who marched over the weekend.

The Eddy House is the only youth homeless facility in Northern Nevada, and it's expanding later this month. As Nevada ranks highest in unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness , the new facility will offer Reno its first 24-hour overnight shelter for young people. Listen as Diaz Dixon, CEO of the Eddy House, walked us through the new facility and explained how it's been designed to meet an individual's needs.

Nevada has brought in close to $200 million from recreational cannabis sales over the last three years. While it may seem the industry has become more mainstream across the state, there are still questions about its future. Soon local women, children and families experiencing homelessness will have their own shelter to stay in. The Washoe County Board of Commissioners has approved nearly $15 million to fund the Our Place Homeless Housing Project in Sparks. KUNR’s Stephanie Serrano reports the shelter will have 265 beds.

At a rally last November in Las Vegas, a reporter noted Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet’s experience leading Denver Public Schools, and asked the presidential candidate, “With your experience in the education area, [how] would you use that experience as president to help the education system?” It’s an unremarkable question—except for the fact that it was posed by a 12-year-old.
