In Washoe County, school started this week and some classrooms are back to learning in Spanish. Kaleb Fikes is one of those students. KUNR’s Stephanie Serrano visited his family to learn more about their experience with bilingual immersion .

In Nevada, there's a growing need for medical interpretation and translation services from English to Spanish in local hospitals and clinics. So, how are we keeping up? KUNR’s Jazmin Orozco-Rodriguez reports.

It may not feel like fall out there yet, but for students throughout our region, summer vacation is over and school is back in session. In this episode of “Time & Place,” historian Alicia Barber takes a look back at the development of Reno’s public schools and some of the neighborhoods they served.

For nearly a century, they’ve been at the forefront of science fiction. They’ve been both heroes and villains. Sometimes they’re highly sophisticated and intelligent, while others are a bit more bumbling and even neurotic. We’re talking, of course, about robots.

The recent mass shootings in Texas, Ohio and California have, once again, raised concerns about gun laws around the country. Case in point: the Gilroy shooting, which left three people dead and a dozen more injured at a festival last month. According to police, the shooter used a semi-automatic rifle, known as a WASR 10, purchased legally at a gun shop in Fallon before it was taken across state lines to California where that firearm is banned.

Summertime in Northern Nevada can really bring the heat. Fortunately, for most of us, cooling down is as easy as heading to the refrigerator. But it wasn’t always so easy for our region’s residents to chill out in the hot weather, as historian Alicia Barber explains in this episode of “Time & Place.”

Reno is home to many artists, some who paint, some who draw, and even those who perform on the streets to try and earn some extra cash, or in hopes of making a living. Hannah Mills, a reporter for Reno Youth Radio, met with painter Erik Holland at his apartment in the Riverside Artist Lofts. She hoped to learn a little bit more about the life of an artist in her hometown. 1983 was a tough year for Reno’s LGBTQ+ community. The AIDS epidemic had reached Nevada. And the Gay Rodeo was facing a stronger threat of violence than in years past. An article from the Reno Evening Gazette said that anonymous telephone calls to Reno’s three main television stations warned that snipers were poised to shoot attendees. Despite threats on multiple fronts, the event was one of the few times that being openly gay was generally accepted in the Biggest Little City.
