The Reno Rodeo kicked off this week for its 100th year. KUNR is covering the anniversary with several stories, including excerpts from a multimedia project called Reno Rodeo 100. For the project, locals have been sharing their memories of the rodeo during open mic nights. They include Guy Clifton, who has written a book about the event’s history. Today, he explains how the rodeo first began a century ago.

As fire season begins to ramp up across the American West, firefighters in Nevada will have more money this year to battle those blazes. That's due, in part, to new legislation passed by lawmakers during the 2019 session, but that's one of the many environmentally-related bills to come out of the legislature. KUNR's Paul Boger spoke with Daniel Rothberg with the Nevada Independent to break it all down.

Former journalist and current history buff Guy Clifton covered the Reno Rodeo for two decades and wrote a book on the event’s first 80 years. He’s teamed up with the Nevada Historical Society to showcase parts of the event’s history in a new exhibit. He spoke with KUNR’s Holly Hutchings about some of the unknown nuggets he’s discovered from years of research and reporting on this cultural staple.

Nevada's top law enforcement official is filing a new lawsuit against drug manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies for their role in the state's opioid epidemic. As KUNR's Paul Boger reports, the suit claims the group created an unprecedented public health crisis for their own profit.

Despite steady improvements in child well-being since the early '90s, Nevada continues to lag behind the rest of the nation in child health, education, economics and family and community life. That's according to the newest Kids Count report released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Lawmakers in Nevada passed a number of bills aimed at improving the state's healthcare system this session. To help break some of it down, KUNR's Senior Political Reporter Paul Boger sat down with Megan Messerly, a healthcare reporter with The Nevada Independent to discuss some of those new laws.

The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees made their decision on a revised sexual education high school curriculum. In a 5-2 vote, the board amended and passed multiple lesson plans. However, board members said no to Lesson 1, which would have included education on sexual orientation and gender identity. KUNR’s Stephanie Serrano breaks down what happened.
