Schools in Nevada are getting a little boost in funding as part of a new weighted student formula. The program seeks to put more money behind students needing additional resources. Reno Public Radio’s Noah Glick sat down with our education reporter Paul Boger to find out what the program could mean for schools in Nevada.

The Reno City Council agreed yesterday to consider a five-acre parcel of land on Sage Street located just off Fourth Street for a new overflow homeless shelter. The building will house individuals overnight when other shelters in the area are full. The move comes after two years of discussion and debate on where to put the new facility. Previous attempts to pick a site have fallen through, and city leaders have been wary of relying on private land. And while the vote was unanimous, council

Humans account for an overwhelming majority of wildland fires, with federal agencies estimating that 80 to 90 percent are caused by people. Target shooting is just one of several ways that people can spark flames. Reno Public Radio’s Noah Glick look at other actions worrying local officials, and finds out what happens to those caught starting fires.

While heat and thunderstorms bring heightened potential for wildfires, the majority of wildfires are human-caused. Target shooting in particular has been the cause of several blazes this year, including the Detweiler Fire that has destroyed more than 130 structures in Mariposa County, California.

The Bureau of Land Management has a team of employees who find and block off abandoned mines in the state of Nevada. KUNR reporter Natalie Van Hoozer tagged along for a rural road trip to find out more.

Reno is becoming the new home for a large, so-called Space Whale sculpture. Our News Director Michelle Billman chatted with contributor Bob Conrad of ThisisReno to learn more. The sculpture is a life-size representation of a humpback whale mother and her calf. There were roughly 1,700 individual glass panels installed in this ambitious piece of public art. The project is paid for out of the city’s portion of room tax funds that go into the city’s arts budget. To learn more, check out this video
