Police in New Jersey are telling drivers to put down their phones.
More than $700,000 in state funding will go to local police departments all over the state to increase enforcement patrols for distracted driving all month long.
Cherry Hill, Deptford, Evesham and Wildwood are among dozens of departments getting funding.
Officers will be on the lookout for people texting while driving during this “put it away or pay” campaign. Violations come with fines from $200 to $400 for a first offense, $400 to $600 for a second offense, and up to $800 for subsequent violations. And, every violation requires a mandatory court appearance.
This campaign last year resulted in nearly 7,000 citations.
