  • Moderna settles patent infringement suit with Bucks company over COVID vaccine for nearly $1B
Moderna will pay a Bucks County company nearly a billion dollars to settle a patent infringement case involving the COVID-19 vaccine.
Arbutus Biopharma of Warminster and a partner company accused Moderna of using their technology in the Spikevax shot.
Without their innovations, the companies argued, mRNA would quickly degrade in the body and be ineffective.
The settlement gives Moderna a license to use the tech in treatments for infectious diseases.
Arbutus could be in line for $2.25 billion in total.

An appeals court is considering whether Moderna or taxpayers should be on the hook for part of the infringement claim.
The Philadelphia Business Journal reports Arbutus has filed a similar lawsuit against Pfizer and BioNTech over its COVID vaccine.
