The Justice Department is suing New Jersey and four other states for access to their voter rolls.
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport called the suit "baseless." She said she is "committed to protecting the privacy of our state's residents, and we will defend against this lawsuit in court."
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the DOJ is "fulfilling its duty to ensure transparency, voter roll maintenance, and secure elections across the country." The DOJ has now sued 29 states, including Pennsylvania, for their voter rolls.
The Constitution gives states the power to administer elections, but President Donald Trump has threatened to "nationalize" them.
The Washington Post reported that pro-Trump groups are pushing the president to sign an executive order declaring a national emergency that they say would unlock extraordinary presidential power over voting.
