Philly journalist Dan McQuade has died.
His colleagues at the sports and culture website Defector say he died after a battle with cancer. He was 43.
The Penn grad was known by readers for his offbeat, humorous perspective in covering the city, both in print and online. During his more than 20-year career, he wrote for Philadelphia Weekly and Philadelphia Magazine, as well as Sports Illustrated and the Village Voice.
He co-founded Defector in 2020 after a three-year stint at Deadspin.
In one of his best-known articles, McQuade calculated the distance Rocky Balboa ran in Rocky II. The piece served as the inspiration for the annual Rocky 50K.
He is survived by his wife and son.
