LacrosseGoalieTips.com Podcast

This week we are talking about:

How To Get an 8th Grader Ready To Start Varsity Next Year

Should Young Lacrosse Goalies Wear Elbow Pads

How To Use a Goalie Outside of the Crease

And much more!

This week we've got some great topics to go over. I got a great FB message from an excited yet concerned mom whose 8th grader is going to end up as the starting varsity goalie next year. That's pretty cooll, but when you realize her goalie only has about a year and a half of playing experience, you can see why she might be a bit concerned. I lay out a complete plan for how this should go to make it go well, and give a ton of advice on ideas on how this can go horribly wrong.

We also discussed why I don't necessarily recommend elbow pads to lacrosse goalies. Surprise, right!? I mean, Coach Edwards, he's the guy that recommendes all the equipment for all the goalies to play better. Yes, yes I do. But this is where I make a couple of exceptions. I also recommend some alternatives for lacrosse goalies when it comes to protecting their elbows.

And lastly, I go over what to do if you've got a mobile lacrosse goalie with stick skills. Why most coaches screw this up, and how they ruin young lacrosse goalies. I also RANT about how most coaches who coach the girls game have absolutely NO CLUE how to use a goalie on the clear. If your goalie is fast and has good stick skills they should be an offensive threat. Why? Because offense starts when the save is made! NOT when the ball gets in the offensive half of the field.

In today's episode...we're doing it a little different. Y'all know how I resist interviewing people in the sport of lacrosse...well, because I don't particularly appreciate feeding the machine, and I want you to be an informed consumer when it comes to helping your kids reach your dreams. Today is a little different. Jim Beardmore is one of the best goalies to play the game during an age when lacrosse was...tough. A C. Markland Kelly Award winner as the best goalie in college lacrosse at the University of Maryland, Jim Beardmore grew up playing in the heart of the lion. His dad "Buddy" is a Hall of Fame coach in lacrosse and raised Jim to play lacrosse in college. He's been called the "Howard Stern of Lacrosse," so you know he's going to bring it real. We're going to talk about the state of lacrosse. Lacrosse goalies in particular. Lacrosse in general. And a whole lot about life too. This episode is definitely going long.

In today's episode Coach Edwards is talking about how to save shots at the five-hole. It is time to end old-school thinking on how to make this save and how to make it look pretty. Coach Edwards brings out examples from Kyle Bernlohr, Jack Concanon, and Blaze Riorden who would probably do ok playing for your U16 Elite Team. The debate on how to stop this shot is over.

A Major Re-Think Of The Lacrosse Goalie Position

When it comes to the field lacrosse goalie position we have lost some basic, fundamental principles of goaltending in general.

The more I watch field lacrosse the more I realize just how bad most coaching has become. It is rehashed. Not well thought out.

The sport of field lacrosse is getting increasingly more difficult to play and coaching needs to keep up with this fact.

So what do we do about it? Today I'm going to talk about some of the high-level thinking I've been contemplating when it comes to the lacrosse goalie position. I think you'll like it.

And be sure to check out the experiment I'm running. Details inside.

This week we are talking about:

Why Teaching Lacrosse Goalies to "Wait on the ball" or to "Be Patient" is bad coaching.
