Jerry spoke to Conor O’Carroll, journalist with the Journal, about his report on over 260 historic landfills that have been left in limbo — many of which have been categorised as being at high or moderate risk of causing environmental damage. This includes four historic landfills in Kerry that have not been submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for certification. Kerry County Council says, “while managed under licence from the EPA, in order for a certificate of authorisation to be sought and obtained, there are additional steps required, including a technical amendment of licence which splits or separates out the licence between the historic landfill and the civic amenity site portion of the wider site. Following completion of this process, Kerry County Council will be in a position to commence the certificate of authorisation process for these four historic landfills. Kerry County Council is actively engaged with the EPA on this matter.”
