The world's biggest social media companies have been accused of creating "addiction machines" in a landmark trial which began in Los Angeles this week.
The plaintiff, a 20-year-old Californian woman, is suing Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, as well as YouTube, claiming the platforms' design left her hooked; with her mental health negatively affected.
It's thought the case could open the door to more lawsuits, potentially from millions of social media users, in the future.
