The calendar will soon turn to 2024, but there are already many NFL teams looking ahead to April and pondering their quarterback situation. Several will consider picking a first-round player at the most important position.

This season’s performance down the stretch of current starters or injured players at quarterback will certainly influence the direction teams go. In this coming Draft, there is a highly rated college crop of quarterbacks — with possibly six who could hear their names called in the first round in Detroit.

The salary cap will affect decisions about a player, such as Arizona’s Kyler Murray, who has too much dead money to be traded next year. Age, injury status and the high cost to re-sign a current starter could have an impact on players such as Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins.

GMs may look for an immediate starter such as C.J. Stroud, who has had a terrific rookie season as the No. 2 overall pick, or for a quarterback who can sit for a year and learn the offense. The latter was the case with Patrick Mahomes when the Kansas City Chiefs picked him 10th overall in 2017. He backed up Alex Smith in his rookie season before winning league MVP honors in Year 2 and leading the Chiefs to the AFC title game. Then Mahomes won the Super Bowl in his third season.

Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, Michael Penix and J.J. McCarthy are among the college quarterbacks teams will be jockeying to draft in the first or second round. Here are a dozen NFL teams that are likely to be in the mix with teams listed by their current draft position.

In the wake of the most controversial College Football Playoff decision in the decade-long history of the system, the common refrain is that the selection committee’s job will never be this difficult again. Next year the field will expand to 12 teams, with four byes reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions.

But what if the committee’s job is actually about to get more difficult? Sure, the group will never again need to wrestle with keeping out an undefeated Power 5 champion like it did with Florida State this year, but it will receive more spotlight and scrutiny on a larger number of decisions. And if you’ve paid any attention to how the group has ranked the rest of its top 25 over the last 10 years, there are many more questionable decisions in there. NFL trades are rarer than in other sports, but they happen more often nowadays. In recent years, we have seen franchise-changing trades go down, turning playoff-contending teams into Super Bowl–contending teams with just one move.

Tyreek Hill is at the top of the list of potential MVP candidates — he was acquired via trade. The Baltimore Ravens’ defense ranks second in defensive EPA/play because of the play they are getting from Roquan Smith, who was acquired via trade.

The San Francisco 49ers have multiple trade pieces contributing to their loaded roster. They’re steamrolling the other top NFC teams on their way to the No. 1 seed.

December football is all about separating the contenders from the rest of the pack. The cream rises to the top, while the other playoff hopefuls duke it out for a chance to maybe win a Wild Card game before being sent home.

Week 14 gave us a taste of that process sorting itself out as the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs suffered painful losses of different flavors.

The Lions took a beating from the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. It was a roller coaster affair that started with the Lions surrendering 10 unanswered points before scoring 13 themselves heading into halftime. Then the Bears took over the game in the second half, an effort that included shutting out the Lions for two quarters and quarterback Justin Fields converting a fourth-and-13 with a touchdown throw to DJ Moore. Humbling loss, to say the least.

For the Chiefs, losing to the Buffalo Bills was less humbling and more frustrating. A season’s worth of turnover problems, poor receiver play and mind-numbing penalties all boiled over at the worst moment. The Chiefs battled the Bills to the very end despite all their inconsistencies on offense, but a Kadarius Toney offensive offsides call erased a lateral pass touchdown from Travis Kelce to Toney in the final minutes, allowing the Bills to ice the game.

Neither the Lions nor the Chiefs are secretly bad teams, but they are flawed teams, and the losses they suffered on Sunday capture that. We’re getting to the point with both teams where it’s easy to imagine those flaws being too great, too cumbersome to overcome when we get to elimination football in January.
