College football’s busiest month of player movement is officially underway. On Monday, the NCAA transfer portal opened to all college football players, who now have a 30-day window (from Dec. 4 to Jan. 2) to notify teams of their intent to transfer. Graduate transfers and players whose head coaches have been fired were already able to enter their names in the portal, but there will be a flood of new names exploring their options this week now that the regular season is complete.

Every NFL season is weird in its own way, but the 2023 campaign has delivered one of the strangest MVP races in league memory. With five weeks and one game to go, it doesn’t feel like there’s a clear favorite or even a strong short list of qualified candidates. So many of the league’s top quarterbacks are either injured (Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow) or declined from what they did a year ago (Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen). Justin Jefferson, the No. 1 pick in fantasy drafts, has been sidelined for most of the season. There’s no dominant pass-rusher blowing away the rest of the competition or a back on pace for record-setting numbers.

Instead, MVP voting that is almost exclusively limited to quarterbacks on successful teams by early December has had to stay open to other options. Even now, with little more than a month to go, it still feels like somebody unexpected could put together a burst of great football to end the season and sneak away with the trophy. There are holes to poke in the résumés of many of the top candidates and reasonable questions about whether those teams are being driven by something outside of their quarterback.

Today, let’s expand the scope and think about the MVP race differently. With no great conventional quarterback, I’m going to discuss the unconventional candidates. I’ll break down stars who play positions that don’t normally win the award, playmakers on pace to set records, defenders who are changing the game with big plays and quarterbacks whose profiles did not attract serious MVP consideration before the season. While most people would pick a quarterback to win MVP before the season begins, just about nobody was picking these quarterbacks.

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper is rightfully taking heat for his “ready, fire, aim” approach, which has contributed to three in-season firings of head coaches, including Frank Reich after only 11 games this week.

Having worked with many NFL ownership groups, I have thoughts on Tepper’s ownership style and where it appears to be going wrong.

But Reich’s firing reflects more than just the whims of an impulsive owner. The bottom line is, making a difference on game days is the No. 1 responsibility for a head coach, and Reich simply could not make a difference with the Panthers roster as it was constructed. It might not be fair, but the pros and cons of the Carolina situation were well-known before Reich took the job. The lack of results speak for themselves through a 1-10 start to the season.

If one looks around the league, coaches sitting on hot seats typically are failing in their ability to make a difference on game days. The situations with Carolina, the Buffalo Bills, the Washington Commanders, the New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers should be viewed through this lens. Once we do that, we have a better idea which teams might be better off replacing their head coaches, and why.

This is a great week of football. Hopefully that means a great week of making some money as well.

The best game of the season may well be upon us, along with being an NFC title game preview. The 49ers lost to the Eagles last year in the conference championship game and spent the last 10 months lamenting the absence of Brock Purdy in that game. Now, they get their chance to prove they’re the better team with Purdy and the rest of the roster in good health.

Elsewhere, the Chiefs and Packers tangle at Lambeau Field on Sunday night. Green Bay has won two straight to improve to 5–6, and has a real chance at sneaking into the NFC playoff picture as a wild card. Meanwhile, Kansas City knows that with a victory (and the Ravens being idle on their bye week), a victory puts the Chiefs back into the AFC’s top seed.
