For the first time with Brock Purdy behind center, the San Francisco 49ers lost a regular season game. The Cleveland Browns beat the 49ers in a 19-17 back alley brawl, finally putting a stain on Purdy’s perfect 10-0 record as a starter.

The loss itself is whatever. No team is going 17-0. Every team in the league has at least one loss now — the Philadelphia Eagles also lost on Sunday. What’s more surprising is that the 49ers offense didn’t look like the well-oiled points machine it had been in Purdy’s other ten starts.

Coaches tell their players and staff to never look ahead, but at college football’s halfway point, the playoff is slowly coming into focus. The first playoff rankings release later this month and the selection committee with have its pick of unbeatens to choose from in the early going.

By a subjective count, there are still 17 teams in contention for four playoff spots at midseason, including a couple who are already saddled with a loss, but not out of yet. Notre Dame is excluded from the mix, despite Saturday night’s win over USC, since the Fighting Irish have two losses and no two-loss team has every appeared in the playoff.

LSU is in a similar predicament. If the Tigers win out and meet the SEC East winner in the league championship game, they would need help — even as a possible conference champion — to be in the final four given this season’s wealth of contenders at the top of the rankings.

College football was not short on the dramatics in Week 7. Hail Marys were answered across the country and a clear-cut contender emerged from the fireworks provided by Oregon and Washington in Seattle.

Five top-25 teams were felled by teams with lower rankings, including four unranked teams. Only one top-10 team, USC, fell. The Trojans were road underdogs at Notre Dame, but the way they lost with Caleb Williams turning the ball over and the total game control by the Fighting Irish was surprising.

Who will be college football’s last remaining unbeaten? More than a dozen remain heading into Week 7, but it’s not going to stay that with several must-watch matchups this weekend. Glancing at our game by game predictions against the spread, we’re expecting a true frontrunner to emerge in the Pac-12 after Oregon and Washington meet while USC-Notre Dame offers a notable quarterback matchup

NFL free agency always is a crapshoot where there are usually fewer hits than misses and major impact free agent signings are rare.

I challenge people to name several elite free agent signees who have been a key impetus for a franchise to become Super Bowl winners. Reggie White signing with the Green Bay Packers in 1993 is one. Deion Sanders being a key part of Super Bowl winning teams in San Francisco and Dallas in the mid-1990s is another. But it’s hard to come up with other free agent signings of that magnitude.

That’s not to say free agency isn’t important in team building. It is when used as a vehicle to augment the draft while understanding it’s a risky proposition for the most part.
