Predicting every unbeaten College Football Playoff contender’s first loss the rest of the way is a task that commands receipt-checking at the end of the year. How many of the current unblemished teams nationally are actually worthy of the way-too-early final four conversation?
Start with looking at the remaining schedule, how teams performed in September, and go from there. We have a large enough sample size now to have an idea of what’s working and what’s not for some of the perceived title hopefuls. And there’s even a couple who haven’t yet been tested — or shown much of anything for that matter.
According to this projection, only two current unbeatens will finish the regular season without a blemish heading into conference championship weekend. For this exercise, we’ve included the 14 teams inside the current top 20 who are still unbeaten and considered playoff threats heading into Week 6:
