Predicting every unbeaten College Football Playoff contender’s first loss the rest of the way is a task that commands receipt-checking at the end of the year. How many of the current unblemished teams nationally are actually worthy of the way-too-early final four conversation?

Start with looking at the remaining schedule, how teams performed in September, and go from there. We have a large enough sample size now to have an idea of what’s working and what’s not for some of the perceived title hopefuls. And there’s even a couple who haven’t yet been tested — or shown much of anything for that matter.

According to this projection, only two current unbeatens will finish the regular season without a blemish heading into conference championship weekend. For this exercise, we’ve included the 14 teams inside the current top 20 who are still unbeaten and considered playoff threats heading into Week 6:

Let’s run through six of those eight blowouts to see how concerned fans should be about their teams. I’ll leave out two teams. There isn’t much to say about the Browns, who were routed 28-3 by Baltimore on a day in which they didn’t have starting quarterback Deshaun Watson and couldn’t do anything on offense with rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center. And while Cardinals fans have to be happy with how hard their team has worked this season, I don’t think any of them will be batting an eye at losing by 19 points to the 49ers.

I’ll stack the other six teams in order of how concerned I feel about their situations after being blown off the field, starting with the team I’m least concerned about, in part because the team that routed it has been dominant each of the past three weeks.

Another week, another example of how slim the margins are in college football this season.

Auburn held a third quarter lead over the two-time defending national champions. USC found itself pushed the brink against an undermanned Colorado team. Even Penn State was tied with Northwestern at halftime before cruising for a big win.

There were preseason contenders who took borderline fatal blows – not a good day in Baton Rouge – and unbeaten teams – it was a great day in Lexington – that made huge statements. There were also, unfortunately, far too many serious injuries in Week 5.

College football’s opening month reaches its conclusion and there are already a number of teams head-turning teams and moments. Highlighting Week 5 predictions for Saturday’s top games, Colorado seeks to regain some of their momentum following a setback at Oregon.

Some years ago, Bill Parcells told me that regarding the types of players available to us in the NFL, “We are captives to what the colleges send us.”

I have immense respect for Bill’s team-building and player-evaluation skills. His extraordinary coaching ability is obvious to all, but many missed what a terrific general manager he was.
