The playoffs have never been kind to Lamar Jackson.

As a rookie, Jackson got his first taste of postseason football in a thrashing at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers. The game got out of hand so fast that people jumped at the chance to question Jackson’s ability to play quarterback at the NFL level.

Jackson returned to the playoffs the following year as an MVP and the first seed in the AFC, only to be upset by a backyard-brawling Tennessee Titans squad.

It wasn’t until 2020 that Jackson got his first playoff win. Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens exorcized their demons against the Tennessee Titans in the Wild Card Round, only to go out 17-3, with a whimper, against the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round.

A failed 2021 season and an injury late in 2022 kept Jackson from playing in the playoffs again until this year.

That run left Jackson with five years of outstanding regular season play with almost nothing to show for it when it mattered most. Each loss or missed playoff game came with a different spin on the narrative. Still, the conclusion was always the same: Jackson was not a quarterback built for the postseason, a moving-of-the-goalposts criticism for those who never thought Jackson was an NFL quarterback in the first place.

Finally, in resounding and resilient fashion, Jackson put that criticism to rest against the Houston Texans on Saturday.

No obstacle is enough to stop Patrick Mahomes from reaching the AFC Championship Game. They had offensive tackle woes, endless mistakes from wide receivers and an embarrassing upset loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas morning. It made 2023 feel like the year things would all unravel in Kansas City. Yet, it’s still Mahomes at the end of the road.

The man is inevitable — the gatekeeper of the AFC. Mahomes is the only certainty in a sport that doesn’t deal in certainty.

On Sunday night, Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs reminded a football-obsessed nation why they can not be denied. Mahomes went blow for blow with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, another classic in a rivalry that already burns as bright as any before it. Both quarterbacks deserved the win, and both teams would be worthy AFC title contenders, but it was the Chiefs who finished the job, advancing with a 27-24 victory.

The San Francisco 49ers are advancing to the NFC Championship Game for the third consecutive season.

They were the top seed in the NFC for most of the season and will now host the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 2019. And as great as that feeling has to be for the 49ers and their fans, there has to be a lot of concern about Brock Purdy moving forward in the playoffs.

With a 3-6 record after Week 10, the Green Bay Packers were a work in process with limited expectations and looking to build momentum for the future. First-year starter Jordan Love had completed a mediocre 58.7 percent of his passes through nine games while throwing for 14 touchdowns and a concerning 10 interceptions.

At that point in the season, nobody could have projected Green Bay would end the year on a 6-2 run, sneak into the playoffs and knock off the No. 2 seed Dallas Cowboys at Jerry Jones’ stadium in Dallas. But NFL seasons are fluid — anything is possible — and Love was in a different place at that time.

Since the beginning of Week 11, Love has flipped the script, completing 70.7 percent of his throws and posting a mind-bending 21:1 touchdown to interception ratio. He ended the season on an absolute tear, ranking third in the NFL in completion percentage, first in passing yards and second in touchdowns through Green Bay’s final eight regular-season games.

Now, after one of the most impressive quarterback performances of the past several years, it’s time to discuss how Love has gotten to this point and whether or not he belongs in the discussion as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.
