John Carroll SJ (January 8, 1735 – December 3, 1815[1]) was a prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the first bishop and archbishop in the United States. He served as the ordinary of the first diocese and later Archdiocese of Baltimore, in  Maryland, which at first encompassed all of the United States and later after division as the eastern half of the new nation.

Because the U.S. government and state governments did not regulate churches, as was done in nations with established churches, the former British colonists and immigrants who made up the Catholic Church in the new land had varying ideas as to how to structure their local parish communities in this new era. Some set up churches run entirely by laity without Carroll's permission, and in other cases clergy exercised excessive control. Carroll sought to navigate a new way of organizing the Church in a new country, taking into account both the need for lay involvement and a reasonable degree of hierarchical control. In 1791, the formal message of congratulations from American Catholics to President George Washington on his election was co-signed by Carroll and lay Catholics.

In this episode of the Podcast we speak with Randy Engel, present to us through her writings. There are 9 choirs of angels, each choir is distinguished by their capacity for service. This means the angels are arrayed in cascading and descending levels of capacities for service much like you see water cascading over a waterfall, of graces cascading from the altar of Christ’s sacrifice. The upper level of Angels known as Seraphs contain the greatest capacity for service. They serve the will of God through their loving and knowing. The Seraph inform the lesser Cherubic class of Angels, since these angels have a lesser capacity for service in terms of their capacity to know and love, and in turn the Cherubs inform that choir of angels that are directly below them in similar cascading fashion.

This is significant when we see Michael contesting with Lucifer over the body of Moses in the Hebrew Scriptures. Michael an archangel defeats in this battle over the body of Moses, a greater force in terms of Lucifer whom we have come to know as satan, a prince of angels at the apex of angel perfections possessing the qualities of a seraph at the top of that Choir hierarchy, in terms of capacity for service, in a life of knowing and loving, except that Lucifer was tested and failed the test to serve, to bend the knee and submit to the will of Our Father, and in doing so others imitating him and in similar fashion refused to serve Our Father on bended knee, and was consequently ejected forcefully from Heaven by the lower caste Angel Michael who remained obedient to the will of Our Father and in so doing Michael was infused with a capacity sufficient to the task at hand to win the struggle over both, the scope of Lucifer’s dominion and Moses body.

Carmelites, Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits: Walking more closely with your hand in the hand of Jesus in specific imitation of the Jesus: Praying, Doing Good to others, Preaching Jesus, and Jesus dialoguing with the world.  The orders provide a Rule of Life that will further detail in specifics how the Mindset of the Church is set to expect from you specific behaviors the one professes to consecrate their entire life in a commitment of love in an effort at Union with God specifically the Will of God, The Memory of God and the Intellect of God, through the Theological virtues of Charity, Hope and Faith.

Life on The Path: Fr Thomas Dubay S.M., divides this life in terms of the Three Conversions, Carmel divides this life on the path in terms of the Purgative, Illuminative and Unitive.

Once we have formed deep convictions concerning the obligation of tending to perfection, it remains but to seek and use the means that lead to perfection. Cf Fr. A. Tanquerey, The Spiritual Life

1. Fidelity in small things.

By this, greater graces are obtained and grave sins more easily avoided.

2. A habit of self-control.

St. Paul says of himself: “I chastise my body and bring it into subjection; lest perhaps when have preached to others, I myself should become a castaway” (1 Cor. ix. 27). Self-control is a sort of abstinence; it is far more profitable than merely abstaining from food. He who can rule himself is a king; for instead of being led captive by his passions, he dominates them. Self-conquest is the mark of a true Christian. Our Lord says: “If any man will follow Me, let him deny himself” (Mark viii. 34); that is to say, he that will be My disciple must practice self-abnegation. St. Paul also says: “They that are Christ’s have crucified their flesh with the vices and concupiscences” (Gal v. 24). A fish that is alive swims against the current; a dead one is carried along by it. Hence you can easily ascertain whether you have the life of the Spirit in you, or whether you are dead; ask yourself whether you stem the tide of your sinful desires, or if you are carried away by it.

3. Abstinence from all that is superfluous, especially in regard to eating and drinking.

Hence Our Lord says: “Woe to you that are filled” (Luke vi. 25). And St. Peter exhorts the faithful thus: “Be sober and watch; because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion goeth about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet. v. 8).

4. Order and regularity.

For this is conducive to peace of mind and rapid advancement in sanctity.

5. Frequent recourse to prayer.

By this means many temptations are held aloof, and graces in abundant measure obtained.

6. Frequent recourse to the sacraments.

7. Frequent recourse to study; the life of Our Lord and the lives of the saints, and meditation on the truths of religion.

This is the same exhortation that resounded at the beginning of my ministry in the See of Saint Peter. Christ addressed this invitation many times to those He met. The angel said to Mary. "Be not afraid!" (cf. Lk1:30). The same was said to Joseph: " Be not afraid!" (cf Mt. 1:20). Christ said the same to the apostles, to Peter, in various circumstances, and especially after His Resurrection. He kept telling them: "Be not afraid!" He sensed, in fact, that they were afraid. They were not sure if who they saw was the same Christ they had known. They were afraid when He was arrested: they were even more afraid after his Resurrection.

…..These are not words said into a void. They are profoundly rooted in the Gospel. They are simply the words of Christ Himself.

“You said it is because you 'did not want to offend the older gay priests in the diocese.”

“When I met with you on Sept. 17, 2018, you were asked by Ralph Martin as to why you have not alerted the public to Inglot's predatory behavior; you said it is because you "did not want to offend the older gay priests in the diocese." Is this the same in Egan's case? On Sept. 11 of 2018, you promised to publish the names of clerics who are credibly accused of abusing minors. I'm reminding you to do what you said. In order for the public to trust the upcoming external audit of the handling of sexual abuse against minors (adults excluded), the public needs to be able to contact the firm to report when the diocese has failed to protect them from sexual predators. How can we contact this firm directly? If I take you at your word, you are more concerned about offending old gay priests and providing perverts with young athletic men than protecting me or anyone else.

This is my advice to you as St. Joseph.”

Bishop Boyea, Our request is simple:

1.  Can you arrange for us to meet the leaders of these older gay priests in the Diocese.

2.  We wish to obtain from them what we lack, that is the influence they admittedly have with you.

3.  We do not know if this influence comes, as a badge of distinction, or if it is based upon their education, knowledge and experience but we will find out and wish to obtain some of it.

4.  We understand the “Influence” they have has taken years of training and we may need some training so, we are willing to sit in classes and be trained and pay for this training.
