    A wonderful touching story
It is very hard to be unmoved by this book. At times, Norman is struggling to keep the tears at bay himself.
    I strongly recommend this book.
    The good old Norman
This is the best audio book I have heard, we all think we've had hard times but Funny Norman tells this from his heart.
Absolutely must be heard or read.
I got this and had to listen to it in one go. It is read by Norman Wisdom and you feel as though he is sitting talking to you personally, it isn't a bit like he is reading more like he is just speaking to you and at times he gets quite emotional. I have always liked him since being a kid and watching him on films and tv. Now I just love the man for his honesty, integrity and humour. Get it you will not regret it.
    My Turn
A humerous, remarkable and sometimes emotional reliving of Norman's life as read by him. If you have a tenner to spend, spend it on this. A throughly uplifting and insightful read.
    From Urchin to Gump suit.
Where does My Turn rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I really loved this book it had my in stitches, but also in tears,it is a heart rending tale of a
boy who rose above the adversity in his life and became a star.
What was one of the most memorable moments of My Turn?
The most memorable part is where Norman is eating his dinner alone on Christmas day, the solitude is so awful, you can really feel that it is one of his lowest points.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I enjoyed the scene where Norman met his Brother again by chance, after such a long time.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was both sad and Happy and very emotional.
    Any additional comments?
Loved this Book , would recommend it to anyone who Loved Norman Wisdom , he was a very Talented Performer and very athletic ,a tough Man, he endured a hard early life and managed to rise above his lowly roots to become a big Star.

    Title: Candyfreak
Subtitle: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America
    Author: Steve Almond
    Narrator: Oliver Wyman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-20-04
Publisher: HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 160 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Almond, who claims to have between three and seven pounds of candy in his house at all times, set out to uncover the inexplicable disappearance of the Bit-O-Choc, the Caravelle bar, and other delights. As he documents his visits to candy factories across America, he reveals the true nature of the industry, with hilarious asides examining the role candy plays in our lives, and often confessing his own near-obsessive cravings. Almond's wry writing style is undeniably addictive and impossible to put down until every last bit has been devoured; listeners should be warned to keep a ready supply of sweets on hand.
    Editorial Reviews:
Part memoir, part exploration of the candy industry, Steve Almond's Candyfreak is a treat for both confection connoisseurs and occasional nougat nibblers.
Like Charlie on his first visit to the Chocolate Factory, Almond is a wide-eyed narrator who truly appreciates the magic of candy. He wants to know how it's made and how he can get his hands on it. And like the Willy Wonka in us all, he dreams up extraordinary, imaginary candy concoctions that'll make your mouth water.
Oliver Wyman portrays Almond's freakdom to pitch-perfection - comic when recounting an embarrassing Halloween episode, nostalgic when reminiscing on his favorite candies of the past. The combination is heartfelt, quirky, and absolutely delicious.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Strangely endearing." (Publishers Weekly)
"I devoured Candyfreak. Steve Almond writes about chocolate with the passion of a man in love and the wonder of a wide-eyed kid in a candy store." (Tom Perotta, author of Election)
"An entertaining book full of repeatable tidbits about the candy industry." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Wry, self-deprecating, and darkly funny." (The Village Voice)

    Language: English
    Release date: 02-19-04

    Publisher's Summary:
At turns shockingly fierce and surprisingly tender, Goat is a shattering memoir that graphically portrays the scarred emotional landscape of young men. Brad is driving two strangers home from a party when he realizes they are leading him to the middle of nowhere. Viciously beaten and left in the middle of the road, Brad survives. But as his physical injuries heal, his psychological wounds worsen. Desperate to belong, he pledges his brother's fraternity. What he finds is not brotherhood and support, but alienation and more violence.

    Critic Reviews:
"A uniquely hip narrative style, gritty with plenty of heart....Immensely readable, Land's tough yet tender book speaks to the fears and isolation of young alienated adults with compelling power, candor, and compassion." (Publishers Weekly)
"An incredible memoir: riveting and relentless, shocking, brutal, just savagely good. And yet. Beautiful and brave." (Augusten Burroughs)
"This is a breathtaking book....Land's voice is distinct, melancholic, and original; the book is a wonderful debut." (Susan Orlean)
    Members Reviews:
if you're perversely curious about frat culture-
then this is the book for you.
"Why" was the pervading question I asked myself as I listened to this torturous journey through a beer and vomit soaked hell.
The book does a great job of revealing the more scatological side of the hazing ritual. Brad sounds a little overly dramatic at times, and not self effacing enough...but then again, he did write this book, which is basically about how he wanted to be "part of the crowd" so badly that he let a bunch of stupid jocks humiliate him to the point where he has a mental breakdown.
it's a rare glimpse into a world in which introspection is almost non-existent, and I highly reccommend it.
Very real, very brutal, and very worth your while
The voice is the most astonishingly real and true rendering I've encountered in a long time, and the reader brings that voice alive. This is not an easy book to listen to, but the dialog rings so true that it demands that respect be paid to the story being told. The cruelty is horrifying. Its impact on Brad, the main character, is profound. That he can survive it, much less emerge from under its pall, is a triumph--as is this work of modern literature. Pervasive profanity, extreme violence, but this is a memoir, and I don't see how else it could be honestly related.
well written and very well read
I'm 60 years old and have been through hazings and the cruel ways of men more than once. This man writes from the heart and I could feel this and, as a result, relate to his tales. Not for rednecks or macho types.....
    Eye Opening!
What a fantastic piece of work! Makes you feel like you are right inside the mind of the characters. Felt like I was there.
    well written, lacks drama
goat is easy to listen to because it is well written and read, but the story never really goes anywhere after the first half of the book. The hazing isnt that out of the ordinary violent, and other then the begining, which kind of just rested there in the background, not really being used to drive the story, the rest of it is about a priviliged boys life complaing about how bad life sucks. read ruinning with scissors if you are looking for drama.

  • How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life Audiobook by Peter Robinson

Title: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life
    Author: Peter Robinson
    Narrator: Peter Robinson
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-22-04
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 65 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1982, Peter Robinson was hired as a speechwriter in the Reagan White House. One of a core group of writers who became informal experts on Reagan, Robinson absorbed not just the president's politics but his manner and way of carrying himself. And the example Reagan set, as a confident, principled, generous-spirited older man who inspired those around him, molded Robinson just as he was coming into his own. "The longer I studied Ronald Reagan," he says, "the more lessons I learned." At the core of How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life are ten life lessons Robinson learned from Reagan: principles that have guided his own life ever since. Yet it also offers a warm and unforgettable portrait of a great yet ordinary man who touched the individuals around him as surely as he did his millions of admirers around the world. The result is nothing less than a love story, an account of one man's profound respect and affection for the president who changed his life.
©2003 Peter Robinson; (P)2003 HarperCollinsPublishers, Inc.
    Critic Reviews:
"Conservatives, exult! Robinson's self-help/memoir/Reagan hagiography is an All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten for right-wingers." (Publishers Weekly)
"The best portrait of Reagan this side of the Reagan library." (William F. Buckley, Jr.)
    Members Reviews:
    This book is amazing!!
This book is not about Reagan and his policies but it is how the man, Ronald Reagan affected his life's views. This book was much more then I ever thought it would be.
    Fantastic!
If you could sum up How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life in three words, what would they be?
    Great Leadership Lessons
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Getting a behind the scenes look into Reagan's personality and leadership style and how he applied those to shaping world events.
Which character as performed by Peter Robinson was your favorite?
    Reagan
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes - throughout - see below.
    Any additional comments?
This was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time.
Not a memoir, but, as the author puts it, a primer - a primer on the leadership principles and personal qualities of one of the greatest American presidents of our time. Peter Robinson answers the question ' How did Ronald Reagan Do It? - how did a man with humble origins and no formal education in law or politics set America on one of the most prosperous tracks in our modern history, while bringing down the once feared Soviet Union? The answers are explained through a first-hand account of seeing the president in action as one of his speech writers, and, in each chapter, the author explained how he applied those same lessons in his own life.
I found the book enriching. After each chapter, I felt that I had a rare glimpse of 'seeing' the president in action, as Robinson expertly narrates various political or personal events the president encountered, and then how the president reacted, what he said, etc. The result was a very touching personal account with enduring lessons on not only leadership, but how to live your life. I absolutely loved this book!!
    Instructive, Heartwarming, and Fun
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this audiobook, because the information covered is fascinating, funny and at all times valuable.

  • To America Audiobook by Stephen E. Ambrose

    Title: To America
Subtitle: Personal Reflections of an Historian
    Author: Stephen E. Ambrose
    Format: Abridged
Length: 4 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-27-02
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 75 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Taking a few swings at today's political correctness, Ambrose grapples with the country's historic sins of racism, its neglect and ill treatment of Native Americans, and its tragic errors. He reflects on some of the early founders - great men such as Washington and Jefferson - who, while progressive thinkers, lived a contradiction as slaveholders. He contemplates the genius of Andrew Jackson's defeat of a vastly superior British force with a ragtag army in the War of 1812. He describes the grueling journey that Lewis and Clark made to open up the country, and the building of the railroad that produced great riches for a few barons.
Ambrose explains the misunderstood presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, records the country's assumption of world power under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt, and extols the heroic victory of World War II. He explores women's rights and civil rights, immigration, museum and nation-building.
Most importantly, Ambrose tells us about writing history, and what an historian's job is all about. As he says, "The last five letters of the word 'history' tell us that it is an account of the past that is about people and what they did, which is what makes it the most fascinating of subjects." As he reflects upon American history, Ambrose shares his own personal history. To America is an instant classic for those interested in history, patriotism, and the love of writing.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ambrose's revelations...may surprise his following." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
A History Lesson like You've Never Had
Although I never liked history class, I found this history professor riveting. Mr. Ambrose takes you through many of the more influential presidents, wars and conflicts through America's history. I felt I was hearing a more complete, unbiased (as much as anyone can be unbiased) view of our history from a man who has done exhaustive research, in addition to living through much of it. It really put our present situation in perspective for me.
Worth the read, but contains inconsistency
I realize that nobody agrees with everything on an opinionated historical recap, but I found myself disagreeing on multiple issues with the author. His patriotism is taken a little too far for me. I praise America, but do not try to defend its short comings to the extent that he does. He also tends to express his opinion as fact and use obscure examples to back up his point. On a positive note, the book is well written and the author is obviously very knowledgable on the subject. I recommend anyone who wants a brief and quick overview of our history.
    To America
Ambrose succeeds in catching the essentials of America's greatness, reconciling (but not forgiving) unbelievable contrasts, such as Jefferson's owning slaves (and therefore accepting horrors such as the New Orleans slave market) and his contributions to the cause of Liberty and the American Constitution..
    Ambrose is a fair historian
He really is a great story teller, which is the way history should be presented. What's more is that in this book he is very up front about the fact that he has changed his opinion on a few things over time. The facts that he presents haven't changed but his opinion has and that gives you the sense that he is always telling facts about history. He separates fact from his opinion.

    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In Fortytude, therapist Sarah Brokaw presents a new understanding of how women can greet midlife with strength and freedom. Brokaw, who happens to be the daughter of Tom Brokaw and who is herself in her late 30s, will share personal experiences as well as professional wisdom - in a lively, engaging voice. In her practice, Brokaw specializes in female clients between 35 and 55, and she has come to recognize five qualities held by the women who navigate the most successful passages through midlife:
Brokaw identifies these five qualities and shows how any woman can foster them in herself. Brokaw's advice and insights will empower listeners to move toward the most productive and satisfying years of their lives - in the same way that Gail Sheehy did with Passages, and Harriet Lerner and Maggie Scharf did in their best sellers in the 80s and 90s.
    Members Reviews:
    Complete waste of your time
If you are looking for insight, you will not find it here. It is an almost random collection of anecdotes of friends and acquaintances of Brokaw which only go to show, "At least some people have it way worse than you do." If you like that kind of read, good for you. But if you prefer a little more research or science in your reading, this is not the book for you. But even more irritating than the weak content is the incredibly poor reading by Brokaw. Pauses are in the wrong place, while the need for a pause after a period, comma, or semi-colon is equally ignored. Some words are pronounced incorrectly, which, with everything else, gives this title an ignorant, second-rate feeling. All over, don't waste your time with this one.

Inspiring great way to take on life advise.
Couldn't stop listening, made be feel happy....will need to relisten so i can properly apply to my life.
1st book great.. This one poor
A very dull book including a drawn out marathon plan which could only be eclipsed in boredom by actually doing the training yourself. And.... why if you have such a brilliant wife not tell her you're doing it? . Monumental snooze fest!!
Not as Good as the last book
I was really looking forward to Chris Evans new book - I really enjoyed 'its not what you think', maybe its because he's not reading the book himself I know Vassos Alexander is his friend from his radio show but it just did not work for me.
The book itself just seems to be very rambling and goes on and on - very little content, big disappointment
Best autobiography so far this year
Loved this book, a really interesting and believable story. Quite graphic in places but totally refreshing. The only thing that would've made it better for me is if it was read by Chris Evans rather than by someone else
    Poor narration
I'm sure this book is good. I've read Chris Evans' others which were fantastic. However the narrator is terrible on this book and i couldn't keep my interest going. I love Vasos on the Radio2 breakfast show but unfortunately he isn't very good as a narrator. Shame really.

Think I'll take this book to camp...
I didn't read this book all at once. It's a wonderful book to dip into when you need a mood-boost. Some of the essays made me think, some of them made me laugh. I have heard Tim tell a number of these stories in performance (always wonderful) and reading them was not a let-down at all, it was like a reunion with a dear old friend. Think I'll take this book up to camp so my extended family and friends can enjoy it, too.

    Publisher's Summary:
Always a winner and a fighter, Mark refused to accept that his injury doomed him to a lifetime of passive acceptance. He fought to regain as much mobility as possible, and his indomitable spirit has helped him create a life that's truly exceptional. Now an Olympic athlete (playing Quad Rubgy, aka "murderball") who has starred in a movie, Mark's memoir tells the fascinating story behind his rise to fame. But this is also the story of his everyday life, how he works out every day, still goes out drinking with his friends, has sex with his girlfriend, and even crowd surfs at Pearl Jam shows.
Inspiring, defiant, and revealing, Mark's memoir will appeal not only to fans of the film Murderball, but also to anyone ready to be motivated by a touching, captivating, and heartfelt story about triumphing over the odds.
    Members Reviews:
    Very inspiring, yet REAL!!
This story is more than a story about Murderball. When I began dating a Gimp - paraplegic from mid back down, this book helped me understand a lot about my, now ex-boyfriend's, life. It helped me understand the desire for independence, how much he could do for himself and that my trying to help him all the time was NOT best for him. It's also a very real look at the challenges that CAN BE overcome and conquered! Very inspiring, yet REAL!!
Supercrip "inspiration porn" but interesting when paired with the Murderball documentary
Mark Zupan, with the help of a co-author, delves into his life as a Paralympian in quad rugby (aka Murderball) player. For folks in disability studies, a good chunk of this book reads like a typical pre-injury/post-injury narrative, including excruciating detail about "overcoming" and becoming "inspirational." A lot of it is embedded in supercrip narratives, but I found it interesting to compare to the documentary Murderball. For a non-academic reading of the book, Zupan's sarcasm comes through most of the writing and makes it more interesting than the typical autobiography of someone who acquired a physical impairment in adulthood.
    Zupan is a good one!
    This is a great book.
Zupan writes very clearly and his competitive spirit and indomitable character are really something to admire, plus he seems like a cool dude.
Really an example of turning a serious misfortune into an opportunity to demonstrate awesomeness.
Purchased a signed copy from a seller that I would buy from again, after trying to find a way to contact Mr. Zupan directly. It's made out to Ben, which is my nephew's name. Will give it to him someday, and hope that he enjoys the read as much as I did.
    Honestly shared true story
Liked the writing. Purchased this book because I encountered this man in the building where I work several months back. I guess we work in the same building. I would like to tell him that I downloaded the book that night, but only just read recently. I overheard on the elevator that he had written a book while listening to a conversation he was having with one of his co-workers. That conversation prompted me to ask him the name. I really did like the writing style and I would like to thank him for sharing his story. It would not be an easy story for most people to share. Real people stories ARE better than fiction.
