Publisher's Summary:
Vets and Pets tells fifteen emotional and entertaining stories of the incredible bonds between wounded warriors, veterans, and other service members and their service and companion animals. Whether these special relationships are with dogs, cats, horses, pigs, or even birds of prey, readers will discover how these remarkable animals help veterans return to civilian life and live independently while simultaneously bringing joy and confidence into their lives.
Tyler struggled to adjust to civilian life after losing both of his legs in Afghanistan, until he met his intelligent and willfully disobedient red European Doberman pinscher, Apollo. Vietnam veteran Patrick regained a sense of well-being and hope through the study of birds of prey. Max the horse has helped numerous veterans learn to trust, improve their communication, and increase their self-confidence and self-esteem. Mandi discovered that the intelligence and unconditional love of pigs were exactly what she needed to heal from an abusive past and a disappointing army-training injury. These are just a few of the uplifting stories that are featured in this striking collection.
In addition to exploring the unique, lifelong bonds that can develop between veterans and their animal companions, Vets and Pets spotlights extraordinary nonprofits that unite wounded warriors with service and companion animals, including Pets for Patriots, Hooves Marching for Mercy, Horses Helping Heroes, and Avian Veteran Alliance, among others.

Our friend - who is a vet with a pet - was quite excited to receive this from us
Inspiring
Having a husband with PTSD, I watched as he found some form of peace through his work with horses. This book really shows that humans and animals can heal each other - I just love this book and am thrilled that there has been some comfort and healing - happy stories from tragedies - there are some good endings in life.
There have been some work done with prisoners and also troubled teenagers in safe envioroment
A must read for all those Vets that are good candidates for a Service or therapy dog and a ...
Outstanding, as a Therapy dog owner and also a DAV I found the stories right on in accuracy of the trials of being a DAV and also the benefits and training needed working with Service and Therapy dogs. A must read for all those Vets that are good candidates for a Service or therapy dog and a copy of this should be at all VA hospitals.
Vets and Pets
Vets and Pets by Dava Guerin is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early September.
14 different stories from all branches of the military and the bonds they have with their pets; whether they are linked together on or off the battlefield for service/companion/therapy. These pets give both their owners and trainers a sense of empowering, protection, discipline, closeness, teamwork, support, and creating/maintaining a routine and schedule in civilian life.
This book made me cry.
The animals in this book can heal the hidden wounds that Vets face. As Vet Jonathan Hedrick says about his cat, Tessa, she âgave me a purpose again.â As a former dog owner and now the adopted parent to three rescue cats, I would never be without an animal in my life. As I learned from Vets and Pets, this is triple true for those who are recovering from the visible and invisible wounds of war.
