    Title: SPIKED
Subtitle: The story of a woman drugged with GhB and how she was turned into a criminal
    Author: Sharron Gold
    Narrator: Katherine McEwan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-05-16
    Publisher: Sharron Gold
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The author shares the shocking true account of how overnight her life was turned into a living hell, after her drink was spiked with GhB - a drug that can virtually turn anyone into a willing slave, combined with the potentially lethal power of hypnosis, gang stalkers on two continents, the latest technology for monitoring and recording all voyeuristic activity, outwardly "respectable" criminals send her on a journey into a 21st century hell which defies imagination, gravely endangering her physical and mental health and leaving her destitute. How does anyone survive such an ordeal? What are the effects on the victims of mind altering and so called "truth" drugs? How does a woman caught in the net of gang stalkers escape? How does she rebuild her life and start the process of seeking justice against the perpetrators?
Her only weapon is her continuity trained memory. Over the three months she was drugged, she mentally kept track of everything that happened like a continuity girl on her own nightmare. As she battles with the withdrawal from the forced addiction, the hundreds of pages she has mentally written down float around in front of her. In a race against time, she has to pick up the pages, number them and turn them into a book as fast as possible. This is her shocking story.

    Amazing Story. 5 Stars!
I met the author a few weeks ago at her shop in Hallstatt. My wife was trying on a dress and I picked up one of two copies of Spiked lying on a table. I saw the author's picture and asked if the story was true and if anyone was prosecuted. I am a police chief in California and had investigated sexual assaults involving "date rape" drugs. When the author, Sharron, found out I was in law enforcement she begged me to read and review her book and to give it an honest review. I promised her I would, and I'm glad I did.
The story is compelling and kept me involved and anxious to read more, but if I hadn't met the author I would have stopped reading after the first few pages due to the style and format in which it is written. It desperately needs editing because the lack of paragraphs, misused words, and spelling issues make it difficult to read, and, at times very difficult to follow which character is speaking. There's my honest assessment, but I am equally honest in saying I recommend everyone make the effort to read it because the story is more than worth it.
I could see this story becoming an excellent movie. For those contemplating this book, do it! I also had the advantage of experiencing the village of Hallstatt where the story begins and ends. It was our favorite place on our vacation where our paths crossed with Sharron Gold, the author. If you ever can, visit it and find the author and her shop, but read this book first; you'll be glad you did.
    Intense, depressing Story
This is an intense story, which I gather is supposed to be true. I am always suspicious of that claim, but if not true, it is well-written, and convincing. Despite some strange reviews to the contrary, it is not hard to follow, and is quite coherent. If it is true, then complaints that the book is amateurish are simply childish. Though it is hard to believe that the degree of evil Sharron Gold was subjected actually exists, it does.

    Title: In Memory of Bread
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Paul Graham
    Narrator: MacLeod Andrews
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-07-16
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
When Paul Graham was suddenly diagnosed with a serious wheat allergy at the age of 36, he was forced to say good-bye to traditional pasta, pizza, sandwiches, and more. Gone, too, were some of his favorite hobbies, including brewing beer with a buddy and gorging on his wife's homemade breads. Struggling to understand why he and so many others had become allergic to wheat, barley, rye, oats, and other dietary staples, Graham researched the production of modern wheat and learned that not only has the grain been altered from ancestral varieties, but it's also commonly added to thousands of processed foods.
In writing that is effortless and engaging, Paul explores why incidence of the disease is on the rise while also grappling with an identity crisis - given that all his favorite pastimes involved wheat in some form. His honest, unflinching, and at times humorous journey toward health and acceptance makes an inspiring listen.
    Critic Reviews:
"Paul Graham has written an account of saying farewell to a familiar pleasure that manages to combine an intelligent survey of modern agriculture with a touching story of a small but all-too-real grief. His book is an essay that does what essays should: combine a useful idea with a poignant moral." (Adam Gopnik)
"A medical-culinary adventure story, by turns harrowing, enlightening, and thrillingly honest, In Memory of Bread is an elegy for the most elemental, essential food there is. Diagnosed with celiac disease and forced to rethink everything he's ever known about cooking and eating, Paul Graham has written a brilliant examination of the very meaning of food, memory, and desire." (Luke Barr, author of Provence, 1970)
"Paul Graham's adventures into the world of gluten-free eating are every bit as fascinating as those of A.J. Liebling and Julia Child into the gastronomy of Paris." (Melissa Coleman, author of This Life Is in Your Hands)

    Now I know
More about wheat than I thought I needed to know. What I liked about this book is how the author wove his journey through a diagnosis and acceptance of a serious disease in with his quest to discover acceptable ways to bake and prepare food . I found myself envious of his cooking talents as well as his local and variable food sources. I do feel his overindulgence in artisan breads in addition to home beer brewing led to the disease raising its ugly head sooner than later although I know he disagrees with that statement.. I also admire his wife's voluntary decision to walk the gluten free path with him. Besides being entertaining, his educational story expanded my vocabulary!
    Well written and good research
I was diagnosed in late 1997 and the overwhelming feeling of life never going to be the same is well stated in this book. Learning to provide the basics of sustenance is well described by Mr Graham. He has anecdotes that were so close to what our family suffered through. I felt hi is confusion and despair. It does get better and we do adjust and carry on, but in our area there is no real substitute for that raised, glazed maple covered long John, although there are those who are making serious efforts. It is an ongoing learning process and I did enjoy this well written, intelligent "memoir".
    well written, timely
This is a really good book.

    Publisher's Summary:
A week after my 50th birthday, and just as our family was about to move home, something happened that changed the way I looked at life. I spoke to others about how they rebuilt their shattered worlds after very different personal traumas, emerging stronger than before. I hope our experiences, together with the latest science on resilience, will help guide all those going through tough times. This book says that it's possible not just to survive them but to thrive. To rise.
Renowned as a much-loved and highly respected journalist and broadcaster with 30 years' experience, Sian Williams has studied the impact of acute stress for many years and is also a trained trauma assessor. In Rise, she explores the science of resilience and growth after trauma, offers advice from the experts, and learns from those who have emerged from horrific experiences feeling changed yet stronger, with new perspectives on their lives, their relationships and their work. She also documents her own path through breast cancer, with candid and unflinching honesty.
Her story provides a narrative thread through a book designed to help others deal with all manner of adversity, including physical or mental ill health, loss of a loved one, abuse and post-traumatic stress.

    Inspirational
A must for all going through or had breast cancer especially as written and read so honestly by Sian
    Heartwarming.
A very thought-provoking, interesting, moving and heartfelt personal story. I have not experienced any of the life-threatening traumas explored here. So I feel incredibly under-qualified to comment. My simple story is a lifetime one of caring for my (very much older) family members, coping with their incredibly distressing (often dirty and even disgusting) and ultimately destructive hoarding habits, coming to terms with my own missed diagnosis of endometriosis (which is why my husband and I were unable to have children, despite several rounds of IVF), and now caring for an 85 year old Mum with the beginnings of dementia. A recent major car accident, when my car was hit by a fuel tanker and written off, with my resulting physical and psychological 'injuries', has been a horrendously scary tipping point. I've had some very dark days indeed. Hence buying this audiobook. Hoping I get to see the light at the end of the tunnel one day...
    Interesting, revealing, honest and inspiring.
Would you consider the audio edition of Rise to be better than the print version?
Yes. The author's own voice adds immeasurably.
What did you like best about this story?
    Honesty and shared experience.
Have you listened to any of Sian Williamss other performances? How does this one compare?
    No.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
The feeling of knowing Sian through her journalistic work made the whole thing more meaningful. A superb listen. Thank you.
    Lovely voice
I always enjoyed watching Sian Williams on breakfast TV so listening to her reading her book was wonderful. The book is rightly raw in places and her determination, hope and positivity are an excellent example to anyone who is suffering.

Personal and Political Identity of a Sex Worker
In this second installment of Whore Diaries, Burns touches upon various stereotypes, one being the general social assumption that sex workers choose this line of work out of necessity. In a capitalistic culture in which one's work is so often central to one's identity, I wondered at the tightrope she must walk when discussing her identity with those outside this co-culture in which she works. At one point Burns' describes her work, saying, "This is what I want to always be doing. I love this strange overlapping and balancing of money, power, ethics, and healing." And yet, her work as identity is something that mainstream, patriarchal culture does not allow her to share with us. It's all on the down low. We have to seek her out. We are not allowed access without specific intention on our (the readers) part. And while it would be easy for me to blame the patriarchy, I suspect that even within the feminist community, Burns' contribution is shunned by some. Perhaps we really are living in The Handmaid's Tale. Regardless of the cultural and political constraints that inform a sex worker's everyday life, Burns weaves a story that descriptively holds our attention and promotes heightened curiosity on the part of her readers.
    Great writing, dripping topic
The secret life stories of a whore: this woman loves her work and loves her life. Inspiring to read. I found myself needing to pause and think about her stories. For example, why is her pungent, messy life so full of joy and enjoyment? Coming from a stale, paper-dry corporate lifestyle, I can't help myself thinking this way.
    Not sugarcoated but sharply focused
... on the things a sex worker pays attention to in order to do a good job / get the job done, be it to liberate a client from his own skin or head, to deflecting unwanted/misguided energy while making a point and staying safe. Unlike what anti-younameits will want people to believe -- namely that sex workers who don't consider themselves victims suffer from false consciousness/were abused when young so they are acting out/are high on all kinds of drugs -- Tara Burns is in the moment, describing her presence and surroundings in a detail so alive, it is beyond dispute she is making fabulously well-informed choices for herself, and no one could tell her what's best for her.
An indulgent read for the senses and the erotic imagination.
    Always worth reading.
There is something open and honest about the words written in this book. I always feel a little more bare, a little more vulnerable after reading something so raw. Even if you think that this book isn't for you, I would encourage you to read it anyways. You might be surprised at what you learn about yourself in the process.
    A good read
I thought this was a really good read, funny too as times. I was surprised to read that she actually enjoyed the sex

    An Education In True Crime
    Any additional comments?
I'm a true crime junkie and am always interested in learning something new about the process by which a criminal is caught. This was a fascinating, in-depth look at the evolution of forensic art and a pioneer in the field's personal experiences as both a cop and sketch artist. Covering many different types of cases, this book had both great story telling and also a big heart. Streed is a talented writer and was clearly a great police officer. Gauffi gives a very solid performance as narrator; I would recommend this book to any fans of true crime.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Intriguing and Fascinating
If you could sum up SketchCop in three words, what would they be?
    Fascinating, True, Intriguing.
Have you listened to any of Stuart Gauffis other performances before? How does this one compare?
It was a good performance. I was kept interested till the end of the story.
    Any additional comments?
"This review copy audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost."
Fascinating look at an underrated position
We see these sketches all of our lives. Rarely if ever do we think about the process or the people behind the sketches. This is an entertaining and interesting look at a police sketch artist and what and how he does it. I gave a 4 on story because the last chapter is rather flat. I would have preferred more information about the author or other sketch artists. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Unsung Heroes
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The sketch artist is key to creating the image of a criminal through the words of witnesses. Someone we often never think about when a crime is solved, but is extremely important to helping identify perpetrators of heinous crimes
Who was your favorite character and why?
Michael Streed, of course. His stories are captivating. Since I grew up in the O.C. and remained for 30+ years I am familiar with the places he refers to, which made especially interesting.

    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From the first third-generation baseball player in Major League Baseball history, a sometimes moving, always candid look at his family's 70 years in the world of professional baseball.
Bret Boone made history in 1992 as the first third-generation major leaguer in baseball history. A five-foot-ten firecracker who was spurned by scouts for his small size, supposed lack of power, and temper tantrums (one scout called him a "helmet-throwing terror"), Bret didn't care about family legacy; he wanted to make his own way. He did just that, building a 14-year career that included three all-star appearances, four Gold Gloves, a bout with alcoholism, and the ignominy of being traded for the infamous "player to be named later." Now that he's coaching minor leaguers half his age, and his 15-year-old son has the potential to be a fourth-generation major leaguer, Bret is ready to reflect on and tell the story of baseball from the perspective of his family's 70-year history in the sport.
Combining the brashness and candor of Ball Four with a dollop of Big Russ and Me sentiment, this book will trace the evolution of the game - on the field and behind the scenes - from Ray Boone's era in the 1950s to Bret and Aaron's era in the 90s and 2000s, when players made millions, dined on lobster in the clubhouse, injected themselves with PEDs, and had their choice of "Annies" - female clingers-on, or as today's players call them, "road beef." Along the way, the book will touch on pieces of Boone family lore, including Bret hitting zero dingers in a home run derby and Aaron's home run (if you don't know what this is referring to, then consult the nearest Red Sox fan). Blending nostalgia, behind-the-scenes profanity, close analysis of the game that only players can offer, and insight into baseball's ongoing evolution as a sport and a business, Bret Boone will offer a one-of-a-kind look at America's favorite pastime from a family who has seen it all.

Good stories, but bad story teller
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
If you're a die hard baseball fan, you'll enjoy the stories. Takes a while to get past his ego though.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Bret is an awful narrator. I appreciate hearing from the horse's mouth, so to speak, but he's a pro ball player, not a narrator.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
awkward transitions, inconsistent speed, ultimately felt like they cut just before he asked for his check at the end.
Was Home Game worth the listening time?
Again, if you love baseball, you'll enjoy the stories.

Title: A Life Discarded: 148 Diaries Found in a Skip
    Author: Alexander Masters
    Narrator: Alexander Masters
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-05-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Unique, transgressive and as funny as its subject, A Life Discarded has all the suspense of a murder mystery. With his characteristic warmth, respect and humour, Masters asks you to join him in celebrating an unknown and important life left on the scrap heap.
A Life Discarded is a biographical detective story. In 2001, 148 tattered and mould-covered notebooks were discovered lying among broken bricks in a skip on a building site in Cambridge. Tens of thousands of pages were filled to the edges with urgent handwriting. They were a small part of an intimate, anonymous diary, starting in 1952 and ending half a century later, a few weeks before the books were thrown out.
Over five years, the award-winning biographer Alexander Masters uncovers the identity and real history of their author, with an astounding final revelation. A Life Discarded is a true, shocking, poignant, often hilarious story of an ordinary life. The author of the diaries, known only as 'I', is the tragicomic patron saint of everyone who feels their life should have been more successful.
Part thriller, part love story, part social history, A Life Discarded is also an account of two writers' obsessions: of I's need to record every second of life and of Masters' pursuit of this mysterious yet universal diarist.

    Gripping biography of a 'nobody'
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would because it's an unusual and compelling story and is written intriguingly
What did you like best about this story?
The way Masters brings himself into the story: both the story of the diarist and the way Masters investigates it are pretty strange but it made me wonder what I would do in a similar situation.
What does Alexander Masters bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
He read it very well. His voice of the diarist came over as breathy and child like and was well distinguished from his own which was important. It definitely influenced how I felt about the diarist and I don't know how reading it would have changed the way I felt but I think it would have done. The fact that the author was reading it made me trust that it was the right voice though.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was quite melancholy, it pulled at my emotions as I could relate to certain things in the diaries but I didn't cry or laugh out loud
    Any additional comments?
Masters does go about his project in a very odd way but I found it fascinating and engaging and it kept me gripped. I think there is a build up which makes the ending seem a bit of a let down but actually the mystery remains. It is an extraordinary story. I would like to read his other books now.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Katrell Christie was a 30-something artist turned roller-derby rebel who opened a tea shop in Atlanta. Barely two years later, her life would make a drastic change - and so would the lives of a group of girls half a world away.
I chose the name of my tea shop - Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party - because it sounded whimsical. India wasn't part of the equation. Not even remotely. I didn't do yoga. I had no deep yearning to see the Taj Mahal or tour Hindu temples. Indian food? I could take it or leave it.
Yet on a whim, Katrell did go. She witnessed the throngs at the Ganges River, toured the tea fields of Darjeeling, and helped string pearls in conservative Hyderabad. But it was in a crowded Buddhist orphanage where she crossed paths with some girls who would change the course of her life.
One night we had a conversation about their futures. What did they hope to be when they grew up? They didn't have any answers. The fear that consumed them was leaving the orphanage. What would happen on the day they were asked to gather their things and leave - to walk out the door and be all alone on the street with no one to turn to and nowhere to go?
With her mind racing about their grim futures, Katrell reached the simple conclusion that she couldn't walk away. So instead she walked forward - on a mission to help them in any small way. Once back at her shop, an idea for The Learning Tea was born. By selling tea, cupcakes, scones, and other treats, Katrell raised enough funds to provide life necessities for the girls - safe housing, uniforms, medical care, tutoring, and ultimately, a college education for each of them. To date, The Learning Tea has helped 11 young girls who once faced the bleakest of futures.
Tiger Heart recounts Katrell's riveting adventures back to India, through the chaotic streets of Mumbai, to tiny villages with roadside tea huts and hot samosas, to elephant crossings and snowcapped mountain switchbacks of the Himalayas - an unexpected backdrop where she fell in love with a country that was gorgeous and heartbreaking all at once, where tragedy, humor, resilience, and kindness were inextricably bound. From dodging feral monkeys, to slamming shots of whiskey to win acceptance at a local Rotary Club, to forging lasting friendships with the people who stepped up to help her cause, Tiger Heart offers a shotgun seat on an inspiring trek across the globe, capturing the essence of India: its quirks, its traditions, and its people.
Fate may have led Katrell to a tiny spot on a map, but it was a kinship that brought her back home a half a world away. Tiger Heart is a life-affirming look at the ties that bind and the power of each of us to make a difference.

    Great book for Federer fans
It was very interesting and captivating to listen to William Sidelsky's interactions with Federer which all transpire in William's mind and without ever really meeting Federer. Sidelsky has a beautiful way of describing the course of his life and his love for tennis. I'm sure someday he'll meet Federer himself, and they can both enjoy the beauty of each other's work.
