If you could sum up Seminole Wind in three words, what would they be?

Super fun read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Other than Brightpath, I loved the character of Maxwell Jodico (hopeful spelling). We all know characters like this exist in real life and K.T. really does a superior job of making me hate him and everything he stands for.

Which character as performed by Larry Oliver was your favorite?

Honestly, I'm from California, so it takes a few minutes to get fully accustomed to Larry's cadence. But as with any good story, once you sit back and open your mind it all flows great. This is a Southern story told in a southern style. Once I got going I found Larry's voice to be very palatable. Not to beat a dead horse, but I really liked the Jodico Character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The thought of a person coming home to an expectation of things the way they were and finding the new reality that invariably awaits is heavy stuff. It's not easy to make me cry, but it made me feel sadness for the character as we've all been there personally at some point. On the laugh front, the character of Austin Decker is a "laugh out loud" character. He's sleazy, slimy and totally moral-less; which of course makes him funny as heck.

I love books like this. I love Regional Writers that can bring you into a small corner of their world and let you take a geographic and informative tour of a place most of us have never been; all the while entertaining you with a great story.

Rapid fire, fun read!

When you read a novella, you expect the story to develop quickly. We are not disappointed when we enter the dangerous and deceptive world of Holly Masters, a feisty "bad-girl" who can definitely hold her own in pre-colonial America against the British soldiers. When she meets the dashing eligible bachelor, Dr. Nicholas Clayton, a bond between them rapidly develops. The author's creativity and literary license kept me guessing as I enjoyed every chapter. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Spradling!

Excellent story, especially if you can download it for free! The story moved quickly and easily, although the premise is totally outlandish. Oh well, nice little romace.

The Doctor and the Spy Who Loved Him

This was a good short story. It was well written and easy to read. It was not a hot and heavy love story, but a growing kind of romance full of suspense and trust.

I don't usually read about times of war, but I did enjoy this book. It was about the warm hearted doctor and the woman who was a spy and the trust she developed for him. Not the war itself.Good read.

wonderful Revolutionary War historical

I read this novella around Christmas, and loved it. In her usual style, and great descriptive writing, Carol Spradling weaves mystery and suspense into this historical set during the revolutionary war. A strong-willed heroine on a mission, together with a heart-of-gold hero, they both have a job to do and a decision to make in whom they can trust (and should they trust each other?) in this time of war. Surrounded by danger, trying to figure out who the bad guy is (as a reader, as well as from the characters' point of view) make this another page turner in the author's list of works. Rich in history, this is a sweet romantic read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves romances set in the revolutionary war period. Whether soaking up the sun at the beach, or curled up on the couch with a blanket on a winter's eve, the author will have you turning the pages until the very end.

Most of the scenes that cover the hero's life after his visit to Shetland.

This is a novel from a different era and conventions change, for instance, away from scene-setting and character elaboration. Even so, I still think that The Dark of Summer is a misconceived novel, with the result that some accomplished writing for instance, a description of travelling by train in wartime -- is largely wasted. Id even go so far as to suggest that Quisling Calling would be a better title for a novel that retained and concentrated upon the intriguing spy story set in and off Shetland during the Second World War, when a puppet government in Norway under Vidkun Quisling became a just-possible focus for an alliance between countries and regions on the territorially ambiguous North Atlantic fringes of Europe, from Tromso to Rejkavik to the Faroes. There is genuine tension in this section of The Dark of Summer, in some ways reminiscent of Erskine Childers novel of 1903, The Riddle of the Sands, with its warning of the then only possible invasion of Britain by a Germany on the rise. The Dark of Summer catches the historical moment of the months after the blitz when the legacy of Dunkirk was heavy on the countrys mind. On the edges of the UK, the situation threw up some radical figures, notably Mungo Wishart, the possible spy, whom the hero, Tony Chisum is sent by London to investigate.

The weakness of Eric Linklaters odd, even bizarre, and now almost entirely overlooked novel is its focus on Chisum, who is also the narrator. He is passive and self-blaming beyond all pretence at English self-deprecation or as a consequence of having only one arm. As a result, the chapters that follow him after he leaves Shetland in add nothing to the historical events of the war, for instance, the El Alamein and Italian campaigns.

Its Not Sharpe, Its different

What did you like most about The Scarlet Thief?

As its mid-19th century British army, and shows things have not improved much since the days of Waterloo

How the incompetence of the Army commanders shone through. Along with the Hero is not some uber warrior death machine....

Slater, as he got the evilness of the character bang on

Unfairly the hero in this good series could be compared the a certain other hero of a slightly earlier period. Yes I am talking about a certain Richard (You bloody bastards) Sharpe. Jack Lark is different, more moral in some ways. Ok he stole his commission (big plot point ops). But certainly no less a hero. In fact could be said in more than one way he is better. As debut novel its a cracker, rips along at pace and the final battle scenes are fanstaic in the way the horror of 19th century warfare is conveyed, along with how bad the british officers behaved to each other much less the men under them.

Jack lark I shall be hearing more of your exploits without doubt. I have the books just the audio books make work less of a dragg...

Far too much detail, it made the story drag.

Too many small intricate details, this made it for me a at times a drag to listen too. Such a pity as the whole story would have been brilliant if there was less minute detail.

really enjoyed this book! I listen to audio books every day going to work and although I try to concentrate on absorbing the story I confess my attention sometimes wavers. Not this one! its a highly entertaining story with great characters and a brilliant narrator that brings the story to life.

Sharpe with a touch of Flashman!

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. A great hero, exciting battle scenes and an interesting premise. I took a chance on it because it was recommended on Twitter, I'm really glad that I did, I've already downloaded the next three books in the series. A great narration by Dudley Hinton too. I'm looking forward to following Jack Lark around the empire....

Outstanding

The recent BBC Radio4 serialisation (Book at Bedtime) didn't do this book anywhere near the justice it deservies and I'm glad that it didn't put me off this unadbridged version, which is quite simply outstanding. Maybe even on a par with Wolf Hall? The narration is superb.

A pleasure to enjoy

This is a wonderful historical novel that transports you to the Borgia court. The enchantment is made more enjoyable by the extraordinary reader who captures the characters and the emotions beautifully

A Renaissance Feast

I was inspired to download 'Blood and Beauty' having read Dunant's 'Sacred Hearts' and 'In the Company of the Courtesan.' This is a wonderful, all-consuming feast of a novel, which I'd recommend to anyone with an interest in historical fiction. Dunant really brings the Borgias to life - and they become so much more than the one-dimensional historical villains they are normally portrayed as. John Telfer's narration is a joy. He throws himself at the book with gusto, verve and great skill.

Gripped after a slow start

Intrigue, blood, death, fascinating characters. Loved it. Beautifully written with wonderfully evocative imagery. Well read although sometimes distracting falsetto used for the female roles.

Why did it end?

Superb. Can't wait to start the sequel. And fabulous narration. An epic story told masterfully.

Great story, disappointing ending

My fifth-grader and I loved reading this book. Carrie is smart and funny, and we felt like we knew her in a very short time. Reading a chapter (or two) was the highlight of our homeschool day.

HOWEVER, the author ends the book by saying that we "don't know what finally happened to Carrie." My granddaughter threw herself and the book down on the floor in disgust. Collier offers several possible fates, but it's totally unsatisfying. She really liked this character and needed the closure of an ending. It was as if we had a good friend who turned her back on us.

This would have been a five-star-plus rating if not for the ending.

Another Historical Fiction by James Collier

I like reading these books because it gives good actual history behind the scenes. This saga gives good insight of what slavery was about in the northern colonies. We don't read as much about the north as we do the south. The story moves right along and is a fast read.

A Must Read Book.....WHO IS CARRIE?

This fabulous book is about a kitchen slave named Carrie, who worked in Sam Fraunce's Tavern for as long as she can remember. After Carrie gets kidnapped and almost sold off to the West Indies, she realizes that she doesn't even know her own last name, or who her true family was.When Carrie's long time friend Dan Arabus comes to town, they talk about how Dan has alomost $300 in "notes" because Dan's father Jack Arabus fought in the Revolutionary War. So basically a "note" is an I OWE YOU from the Government.Jack Arabus died fighting in the Revolution so Dan got all of his fathers notes.

After talking to Dan, Carrie decides that she really has got to find out who she is, and if she is a slave or not.Once I finished reading this beutiful Historical Fiction Novel I then realized the hardships of slavery. I would recommend this book to all ages and bothe males, and females because this book was easy to understand, yet it was somewhat hard to read with the old 1800's accents and dialects of the Northern Colonies. Also elders would would probably remeber a little about slavery because this went on until the 1950's, ofcourse it was not as bad as it was in the 1800's but still slavery was indeed around then, so they could have a great time reading this book about how slavery was in the 1800's compared to the 1950's. I had to rate this book a four and one half stars because it was just a mystery until the very end and this just made me want to read it more and more so I could find out who carrie was and if she was a slave or not.

Good read

I enjoyed this book, it jumps around a bit from one time period to another but it was a good listen and kept me listening.
