Excellent Performance, Mediocre Story

What made the experience of listening to Flashman the most enjoyable?

The performance by Rupert Penry-Jones was perfect. Very convincing as both Flashman as well as the dodery old Generals and Majors that pop-up throughout the book.

Would you recommend Flashman to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes - although perhaps not the easily offended!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

When Flashman's in hospital having the stories of his heroism recounted (all of which are false) and Flashman finding out the only person who knew of his cowardice was dead.

What made the experience of listening to Flashman the most enjoyable?

The story telling is great and the fact that this is historically accurate is fascinating. The 1st Afghan war and the follow ups is a real eye opener on individual heroism and adventuring beyond known maps (of the time). All the more fascinating due to the current political climate.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Has to be Flashy - don't you know (says I). But the Sergeant is a close second with the Afghan nemesis

Rupert really brings the story and characters to life. Each is given their own larger than life personality.

Jonathan Wood - Revealed

INTO THE WOODS by David Wood provides insight into the age of American exploration of pioneer Jonathan Wood.

At the battle of Kings Mountain, Jonathan Wood places his patriotism on the line in one of the most influential battles in pursuit of independence of this country that nearly ended his life. Much of the early coverage of the exploits of Jonathan Wood were well documented in the writings of Lyman Draper (aka Draper Manuscripts), and later stories associated with Daniel Boone, but this book places faces on the names and character insights into the processes that turned a wilderness frontier into the westward movement that was later chronicled by Hollywood.

This book should be mandatory reading in schools for describing the early American frontier, as well as frightful, as well as positive interactions between early settlers and Native Americans!

The stories described herein are compelling and thought provoking. The timelines are historically accurate and reflect in-depth research and personal investment into the lives of the Wood family of Southwest Virginia. This work should, in my opinion, evolve into another book about the Wood family, which might expand into the similar pioneer exploits of Jonathan Wood's son Henry Wood and his family. After his many years of intense research, David Wood leaves a lasting legacy with both his son Davis S. Wood, and the book that his son made possible. Sadly, this work could only reach publishing following the elder David Wood's passing.

Anyone researching Southwest Virginia and wilderness exploration would have Addington's History of Scott County, and SHOULD have "Into The Woods" by David Wood as a companion reference as well! Excellent work!

Good story but....

Very well written and good plot but I felt it was left lacking by the time I finished. It seemed that the way the book began should have been developed instead of just kind of forgotten. The story also seemed very rushed.

A personal story of events leading to the Revolution

Here is a glimpse into the lives of real 18th-century Americans before, during, and after the Revolution. Instead of the typical history-book view of major battles and major figures, Into the Woods treats us to a very personal perspective on the early westward movement of first- and second-generation Scotch-Irish immigrants in the Virginia colonies. I like the style and the writing, and I like the drama of love lost and won. The personal bond between the chief character and a native American is touching while remaining wholly plausible. Father and son collaborated in writing this family history shortly before Wood Sr. died.

Very entertaining

well written story which in the beginning is about amy, a doctor who saw the horrors of the first world war now faced with the prospect of her children serving in the next one. she feels her daughter is safe as she is training to be a doctor but what about her son. what will he do. the story expands to cover her family and the full six years of the war.

Penelope freeman performed the story well bringing the characters to life.

Stunning

This book held me spellbound throughout. Alice Pung writes with honesty and power without affectation. I learned a lot about the Pol Pot years and the description of her father's life during this time was haunting - it will stay with me. This book should be compulsory reading in all Australian schools. It would make the average Aussie wiser, more understanding and just kinder. It's not all grim. There were parts that made me laugh out loud - I loved the story of the laminator! I can't wait for the next Alice Pung offering.

Worth Reading

Well written book, good synopsis of the time of the Khmer Rouge and the long term effects on survivors of this period.

A revelation on Cambodian revolution

I found the author writing in third person disconcerting in the flow of the story.

The information on the conditions in Cambodia during the Pol Pot regime vivid, educational and very disturbing. Very well written - I was engrossed.

The story starts of life in the suburbs of Melbourne - a bit dull and I nearly put the book aside a few times - glad I persevered, as the story of her father's life in Cambodia was an eye opener.

Excellent but flawed

This is an almost wholly satisfactory ending to the story of Marty Keller,reluctant bounty hunter,as begun in the previous book "Man Killer".

It is seven years later, and Keller is still on the hunt for those who murdered his wife and son. When he runs out of money, he turns to bounty hunting to fund himself. He has become a legend, but one that that he doesn't like, as the inherently warm and friendly Keller is scorned by "decent people" because of his profession. Wounded after a shootout, he is taken in by a widow whose sheriff husband has been backshot and his murderer uncaught; soon, Keller recovers and is motivated by gratitude to go after the sheriff's killer, only to find a link to his own quest as a result.

The disconcerting weakness to this otherwise well-written book is bad proofing. A six thousand dollar money order is made out; when it is received, it is sixteen thousand. Keller looks for a blonde man; in the next town, he continues to seek, but the man is now dark. Keller states that he has killed only one of the five who murdered his wife (though in the first book, he gets three); he gets the last two, and it is now all over. These repeated errors are distracting.

Nevertheless, a good book. But flawed.

THE GREATEST BOOK EVER!

Just imagine. You go out to go on a cattle drive and your Mexican hand gets killed. Your family dies also. Then you decide to go after your family's killers. You become a Bounty Hunter in the ol' wild west. You catch some outlaws for the money they bring upon themselves. Then you're about to die when you come up to a widow's ranch and you just pass out there. She helps you out by taking out the bullet out of your shoulder. She keeps you at her ranch to help you rebound from your near death experience. Then she tells you, while you go riding with her, about her husband's killer. She asks you if you could help her out by getting her some revenge from her husband's killing, and/or murder. So, you go after her husband's murderers and you give 'em what for. You also, while helpin' this widow out, save a ranch from your actual murderers. You give 'em a war. Then you go after the rest of 'em. Then you catch up to 'em and get your revenge. So, you go back to the ranch you helped out and leave and go back to the widow's ranch and live there for a long time. READ THIS BOOK IF Y'ALL WANT TO FIND OUT MORE!

If you could sum up Helen Keller in Love in three words, what would they be?

It is a beautifully written story. It is a portrayal of her life, personality and the one powerful love affair she had in her most illustrious life. It is very heart warming. This accounting makes it clear that powerful, caring and loving people are not absent of passions and our sweet Helen Keller is no exception. You want her to have love, yet you sympathise with those around her that want to protect her. They are all at risk of hurting her in a profound heart wrenching way. Yet, there is a lot of humor between Peter and Helen. This helps lighten the intensity of what these two lovers are up against. The humor in this lovely telling adds a nice color to the love, sadness and confusion Helen experiences. Worth the listen!

I enjoy Robyn Youngs writing. Especially her insurrection-trilogy is great. I thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward at listening to the next.

The story took too long to go nowhere

the story took too long to go nowhere. plenty characters but not enough suspense and intrigue. Could have done with more cliff hangers. I struggled to finish it.

Great book, narration lets it down at times.

Great book and story - I loved reading the books. Can't wait to download the 2nd book in the trilogy.

This is my first audiobook so I may be being a bit critical but I cringed at times with the persistent narration errors that were allowed throughout the story-telling. Emphasis on certain words which disconnected them from the sentence they were related to and attached them onto the next sentence where they had no connection, the occasional sentence of speech which came from the wrong character.

Also, I didn't personally enjoy the Scottish accent that the narrator gave to Will Campbell - it seemed a bit too fabricated. While on accents - the characters in the Paris Temple appeared to be from various areas of the UK Midlands which let the book down too.

Good story but terrible reader

Once again Renee Raudman almost ruined this story for me. She does really bad male voices and her famale voices are not much better. The story is light and fluffy as all Jane Peart books are. Avril is a bit selfish and immature but l still like her. This book is a little like eating cotton candy, enjoyable once in a while but not very good for a steady diet.
