    Deep & Emotionally Charged
This is by far one of my favorite stories ever! Any woman alive will appreciate the challenges & triumphs of Amy. Be ready to cry, rage, rejoice, and live the thrill of the redemption of true love.
    Engrossing
I was captivated within the first ten minutes. Very well drawn characters, beautifully written. The flavour of the period was well drawn and the actress who reads the audio is just magnificent. Her voice resonates with emotion and she creates the sense of a play with her different accents and voices.
    Well worth the download
    Great book.. great story..
    love this story!
The story was captivating, one of my favorite books ever. I highly recommend this book. It's a bit long but the story continued to move forward and hold my attention. This is the third book I've listened to read by Carole Boyd and I really enjoy her performances. Bravo!
Yes, this book is worth every minute.
From the beginning, the narrator captures your ear, and the characters capture your heart. Get ready to not put this one down until you have heard the last word. The story has all the ingredients - and, as all of my books must, ends happily ever after. I cannot say that there were not some very painful moments, but Audrey Howard does a beautiful job of showcasing the spirit of love, grace, mercy, and perseverance.

    Publisher's Summary:
This great African adventure novel is an enduring favorite among those who love excitement and romance. It is filled with qualities close to the human heart: the spirit of adventure and discovery, the desire for immortality, primal terror, and the search for the primitive. Few knew the Dark Continent as Haggard did; his experience of savage life and wild lands lends a visceral credibility that makes us believe the impossible. Yet beyond all this lies a feeling for the supernatural. Adventure alone was not enough for Haggard: "The thing must have a heart."
    Critic Reviews:
"A tense adventure thriller heightened by John Richmond's reading telling of a search in deepest Africa." (

    Huzzah for good audiobooks!
    What an audiobook!
This classical story of Allan Quatermain's adventure through unexplored Africa is just a splendid, and the narrator, Mr. Rudnicki, did a wonderful work filling the audio with life and excitement. If you want to get lost for 8 and a half hour in a brilliant classic adventure, then this is what you need.
I have to admit that my workday has never gone by so quickly, more than 8 hours and I didn't notice a thing. Huzzah for good audiobooks!
    Great yarn.
Great "Boys Own Annual" style story with plenty of action, adventure and uncomplicated characters. The story unfolds linearly allowing an easy, satisfying listen. Well read and recommended.

Gilbert Morris is a talented writer
We gave this to our grandson along with all the others in the set and he started reading them right away. He is a great fan of Gilbert Morris. He also noticed that characters from other books are also mentioned in this series.
    A fantastic series.
What becomes evident is the amount of detail and accuracy in describing the era, the houses, clothing, and of course that adds to the marvelous characters' great credibility~
    Five Stars
Good book about Revolutionary War period.
An inspiring novel of American Patriotism
This is the second book of the Liberty Bell series. The book shows the tension that war sometimes causes, Daniel Bradford, an American patriot, is fighting on the opposite side of his beloved sister Lyna Lee's British officer husband, Gordon. Both men are shown as men of character and conviction, as sometimes is the case in war. The book highlights the sons of Daniel and Gordon, who serve their countries with conscience in their own ways, and with different convictions. This is a book that is rich in patriotism and faith in God. well done!

New York City newspaper columnist Carter Ransom returns home to Mississippi to face his difficult past, his father's unwavering disapproval, and new evidence in a 25-year-old bombing case.
    Members Reviews:
The Past Is Not Even Past
I was sorry to see this book rated less than the five stars it deserves. At times the author approaches the grandeur of Faulkner. It is a three-tiered story of the 1964 Freedom Summer. (At times the tiers of time get a bit difficult to discern, especially within chapters, but the author always provides clues as to the time period--characters on the scene, places, etc.) Faulkner was forced to use italics to separate past events from present, but Marlette has learned from Faulkner that the modern, attentive reader does not need such. The book has literally everything--love, loyalty, violence, segregation, Ku Klux Klanners, generational conflict. In the end it shows a development from the South in the 1960's versus the 1990's. Black congressman are elected in predominantly white districts, then lead charges against corporate America for environmental pollution at the cost of local jobs. The central event, however, is the 1980's trial of a man who escaped conviction in the 1960's while his cronies went to jail. (This rings a bit false in that no one was convicted in the Goodman, Schwerner, Chaney murders in Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1964, a historical event this novel closely parallels and reflects upon.) There is the suggestion of blackmail in the 1980's trial, implying that a progressive judge had "let off" the current man being tried back in the 1960's. "Do you civil rights workers want THIS to come out?" The judge in question is the father of the Hero, Carter Ransom, a New York journalist sent back to Mississippi to cover the trial which could well embarass his own father to whom he is devoted. The judge owns up to his own "sin," thus defusing it as a trial issue. The man who got away for twenty years, now old and in a wheelchair, is convicted and sent off to prison where he should have been for 20 years. There is a long chapter describing what actually happened that night the Shiloh Church was burned down and four people were murdered. Marlette is clearly indebted to Faulkner, historical fact, to Diane McWhorter (Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of "Carry Me Home"), and to any number of authors who demonstrate that the past is not really past--it dominates the present. This book is worthy of the highest praise and the highest awards.

Good book. The only thing I wish was that it went straight through with the story rather than jumping back in time every few pages.
Magic Time is a MUST read
I just read Magic Time for the 2nd time. It is so well written that knowing there will be no more Marlette novel's is a sadness. Able to poke fun at the stereotypes...moon pies and coon dogs, Marlette has a great heart for the South. He understands the deep and rich soul of the Southerner. Set in the Civil rights era, no one has written about this period in history any better. Wonderful characters that remain with you long after you have turned off your Kindle or shelved the novel. The Bridge is the other Marlette novel. Don't miss these fine novels.

    Release date: 03-03-09
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Jeffrey Archer's Paths of Glory is the story of such a man - George Mallory. Born in 1886, he was a brilliant student who became part of the Bloomsbury Group at Cambridge in the early twentieth century and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I. After the war, he married, had three children, and would have spent the rest of his life as a schoolteacher, but for his love of mountain climbing.
Mallory once told a reporter that he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, "because it is there." On his third try in 1924, at age 37, he was last seen 400 feet from the top. His body was found in 1999, and it remains a mystery whether he and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, ever reached the summit.
In fact, not until you've heard the last words of Archer's extraordinary novel will you be able to decide if George Mallory should be added to that list of legends, while another name would have to be removed. Paths of Glory is truly a triumph.

While this was a historical novel, I believe it was generally accurate.
For the most part I only read non-fiction adventure, however this was a nice change and I would recommend it for those interested in George Mallory and his attempt on Everest.

Interesting reading but I knew how it would end as soon as I read the Preface.
Interesting quasi-historic recounting of George Mallory's attempts to be the first to conquer Mt Everest. I say "quasi" because other authors have beaten his path, but with less drama.
I would recommend this book to all lovers of Jeffrey Archer as ...
As with all Jeffrey Archer books, this one is a gripping read. It was fascinating that it is based on a true story. The factual elements of the story in terms of the challenges the climbers experienced and the lack of modern equipment was very interesting. I would recommend this book to all lovers of Jeffrey Archer as well as lovers of a good story well told.
    Paths of Glory
This is an astonishing novel based on real people and actual history. It is hard reading at times because of the details needed for the explanation of the motivation driving mountain climber Mallory to risk his life on such a dangerous undertaking. It is also important to understand the wonderful family he had behind him. It is also important to understand the bureaucratic obstacles he had to overcome. It is also an illuminating study of British manners and behavior. It will be liked by readers who enjoy history and the sport of mountain climbing.
    Historical fiction ... excellent.
This is a work of historical fiction. A true event in history with a fictional plot wrapped around it. In this case, the first ascent of Mt. Everest by the Englishman, George Mallory.
The novel opens with a team finding a body on the slopes of Everest and one of the team members searching inside the clothing of the body looking for a picture of Mallory's wife. Mallory always climbed with a picture of his wife in his jacket pocket. Upon finding no picture, the prologue ends there and the novel begins. Note, the finding of no picture doesn't mean this isn't Mallory. (pure Archer)
Jeffrey Archer can hold my attention like no other author. I'm immersed by the end of the first chapter and held there until the turn of the final page.

I strongly disagree with Linda Lou. I enjoyed listening to this audio book and hope book 4 wll lbe comming out soon. I would like to hear more of what happened after their escape. Did Queen Jean escape, etc.
    Loved it!
This is a fantastic series and this book was a great close to the trilogy! The story is full of a heroine that I long to be and her love a noble (good looking) man. I could easily imagine myself right inside this story. Sword fights, intrigue, honor, and a world in turmoil will draw you in and make you hope for the best.
    Not very good or interesting
If you've read Vanora Bennett"s "Figures In Silk" and think this book is a sequel/prequel or companion work done by a different writer, you will be very disappointed. Although I was not overwhelmed by Bennett's lusty men and low self-esteem female characters, at least they were richly drawn. And we got rare insight into silk-making from worm to fabric and we learned about the lifestyles of the people of that age. In Chaikiin's book, I couldn't figure out what or who it was about! Her Catherine of Medici was pale compared to any other account that I've ever read. The story had no local color - it could have taken place in France, England, Tahiti or downtown Baltimore. The only reference to "silk" was the occasional commission by a royal for a dress. The two main characters are supposed to be "so much in love" but all we read about is chaste kisses and sex between them is referred to as "the next morning" - no heaving bosoms, taut britches, tangled bedsheets, or afterglow. Rachelle and Fabian, the heroine and hero, suddenly expect a child but we sure don't know how it happened! Since Chaikiin spends more time trying to push religion down the reader's throats with no real justification, maybe the pregnancy was another "immaculate conception". She skirts around heretics and reformists and Calvinists and Martin Lutherists but never gives us any substantive information on the religious issues and fears of the time. In fact, we don't even get a good idea WHEN this story takes place except for references to Catherine de Medici, Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, Jeanne of Navarre, etc., but no solid character development on anyone. If you must, read this first THEN go to Bennett's book. NOTE: Chaikiin's "Threads of Silk" and "Daughter of Silk" are the same story, one is just a few dollars less. Pass on both and save your money!

Loved the book except one odd bit of narration
I like the book. I like the look at the Civil War period from the perspective of the slave. I like the richness of the characters.
I thought the narration was well done except for the three occasions where German characters are being narrated. The narrator has an odd accent for them. It sounds more Jamaican than German.
It's a very small part of the book so I can't say it had a lot of impact on my enjoyment but it was odd each time and if you are a stickler for accents it might be best to avoid it.

Funny But Not Mr. Edgerton's Best Novel
Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. In Clyde Edgerton's latest THE BIBLE SALESMAN, objects including a comb, cat, shovel, typewriter, et cetera are falling all over the place very much the way this novel rambles and meanders on, never quite coming together. The story is set in the rural South in 1950, 1951 and the 1930's and 1940's. Mr. Edgerton throws in a dead cat, bananas and condoms-- on in the words of our hero Henry Dampier "preventatives"-- an obligatory bluegrass/country singer or two (in this instance Roy Acuff and Hank Williams), and the game that children of a certain time and station (Baptists) played where they named a hymn as in "Love Lifted Me" and then added "Between the Sheets." A house-to-house Bible salesman was once as much a fixture of the rural South as the Watkins man and certainly ripe for a memorable fictional character. Flannery O'Connor embedded at least one such salesman in the literary landscape in "Good Country People." And certainly taking on the Baptists should have been as easy as shooting fish in the proverbial barrel. I am not sure then what happened here, but the story never gels. It is not plausible, for example, that anyone as gullible as Henry, who buys Clearwater's story that he is an FBI agent, would have the insight to question an apparent contradiction in the two creation stories in Genesis.
Mr. Edgerton does some things very well in this novel, actually much more than well. He certainly gets a lot of details and the language right. Young people in church do "sword drills." Children who disobey their elders get punished with a "switch" that they have to get themselves from a nearby bush or tree. They eat ice cream out of paper cups with flat wooden spoons. Women wear "earbobs." Adults play horseshoe and Rook, and the men use Prince Albert tobacco. It is not unusual for a family to have a child that is "not right." These characters mind their "bidness" and threaten to hit someone "upside the head." Some of Henry's carryings-on with Marleen are quite wonderful as in his description of the differences between "a woman having a baby and having a car and having a headache, yet it was all the same word. You could get rid of a car in a minute, but not a headache. And to have a baby meant give birth to. Why give so much work to one little word?" And when Marleen places a kiss on his lips, "He'd been run over by a moving mountain." Finally, Henry and his cousin Carson's lesson on unhooking a bra strap was worth getting to page 187 for; even the Baptists would laugh at that.
I liked tremendously Mr. Edgerton's previous LUNCH AT THE PICCADILLY and wish I liked this one more, but I don't.

    Enchanting and Educational
Chariots in the Smoke was an enchanting and educational book. It helps readers learn about the Chatanooga and Chickamauga battles but also keeps readers excited and anxious because of the romantic twists. I loved this book and think that Gilbert Morris has a superior way of capturing romance and telling it to the best degree. This book is perfect for all ages above 12.

    Publisher's Summary:
Miriam - also known as Mary - was born into a Palestine oppressed by Herod the Great; she is accustomed to living with uncertainty and unrest. But when her beloved father is wrongly imprisoned by the Romans, she takes action. She calls upon a well-known rebel by the name of Barabbas, and together they set out to save her father. A daring escape is accomplished and, against staggering odds, Miriam's father is saved from crucifixion.
Barabbas, flush with the success of the rescue, is intent on leading a full-scale rebellion against Herod and the Romans. Along with Mary and her father, he speaks before Jewish leaders who have gathered from various communities. Miriam feels great frustration as the men endlessly debate morality, the wisdom of rebellion, and the nature of God's will. Having almost lost her father, and knowing she will be ostracized, she nevertheless speaks out against the use of violence. And to her surprise, one man, Joseph, listens. He offers to take her to Magdala, where she will be allowed to study in the company of intelligent, well-read women. This rare opportunity sets into motion a series of events that will change Miriam's life - and the history of the Jewish people - forever.
Based on extensive historical and biblical scholarship, Mary of Nazareth is a revealing, utterly captivating portrait of a woman whose story we only thought we knew.

    Not what I was expecting
Disclaimer this is completely my opinion: you may agree with it and want to stay away from this book, you may disagree with it and it will draw you to this book. I honestly believe your feelings on this will make or break this book for you.
This is a good story a very good story, well written out and well told. However, it is not the traditional story of Mary form the bible, and it is certainly not the traditional story of the Crucifixion from the bible, and these are the reasons I can not rate it as highly as a well written story should be. I enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book, completely and utterly. the last 1/4 of it ruined it for me.
This is the story of Mary, from her early years (which is the majority of this book). It is not until the last quarter of the book that becomes Mary as Jesus mother, which is skimmed over, as is her role as his mother growing up, focusing on the highlights of special scenes in the bible. And this is where I have issues. I believe Mary was a virgin when Christ was conceived and born. I believe however that Joseph did marry her. I also do not believe, and that story seemed to imply this, that Mary pushed Jesus into revealing himself before time and thus pushing him to the cross, that his death was her fault.
