Great voice reading and writing but weak in other

I liked Mr. Sidebottom's "Warrior of Rome" series more as it had more "lively" plot and characters while this book is a longer version of the primary sources on the era it describes. I would certainly like more revisionist approach to this subject. though in technical sense the writing is still good.

Ok but not amazing

I found it really hard to get in to this one at points I feels more like a narrative rather then a story that you can really Imerse yourself in to. to many long list of names ect.

Lacks the Excitement of the Warrior of Rome Series

What disappointed you about Iron and Rust (Throne of the Caesars, Book 1)?

I loved the Warrior of Rome series and while this was just as well written, the novel is more political, less focused on the military and lacks the near-death excitement of following Ballista.

What character would you cut from Iron and Rust (Throne of the Caesars, Book 1)?

I didn't know who to like. There is no main character and as the story jumps around the Empire I cannot engage with any of the characters as they move fleetingly through the narrative.

There are some interesting parts, but more often than not the narrative drags. Not consistently entertaining; often slips into tedium and the mundane.

Lovely Listening, Eventually!

A bit if a slow start, I found, but once the story got going I really enjoyed this book. The early chapters are of course necessary to set the scene, but a little depressing. However, I did get a happy ending and overall this book is worth its 5 stars. Carol Boyd is her usual excellent self as the reader.

Not quite as advertised

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Although titled Abdication, this is a rather minor part of the story. It mostly concerns various staff, family and friends of the King and Mrs Simpson. I had hoped top be better informed as to the reasons and detailed background of the abdication itself. This was only a fairly minor part of the whole.

What does Carole Boyd bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Carole Boyd narrates the story perfectly and I enjoyed listening to her throughout.

Any additional comments?

If you want an 'above and below stairs' story of life among the different classes and people involved at the time of he abdication, then this will provide it.

If you wish to understand the background to the abdication... then look elsewhere.

I love Carol Boyd's narrative style as reader

and now I love this story too. I found the characters very real and engaging.

Historians do not always make good novelists

I might have enjoyed this book more if I had not just heard a history of George VI, a biography of Mrs Simpson and read a book about Oswald Mosley's first wife and her sisters. I feel that this was just a collection of well known facts about a group of well known people with a couple of fictional characters thrown in and very little story to link them all together. I kept listening in the hope that something major would happen. Alas, nothing of real interest did happen.

The contemporaneous details of life and social issues faced in 1923 are an added delight and point of discussion

As I have come to expect, Cate Campbell had me in the grip of the story from the onset. Even more than usual, however, she had me anticipating a turn of events which suddenly went in a different direction than I expected. The characters introduced in the first 2 novels of the trilogy remain vivid and continue their authentic growth, and new characters are just as vividly portrayed: I can always clearly visualize Campbell's people. The contemporaneous details of life and social issues faced in 1923 are an added delight and point of discussion. I highly recommend the entire Benedict Hall trilogy.

Life in Seattle in the 1920s

The Benedict Hall novels are set in post WW1 Seattle. "Benedict Hall," the first in this series of novels, was published shortly after I moved to the Seattle area. I purchased it to help get a "feel" for the history of my new home. This is the third in the series and I have read them all. I got an excellent feel for Seattle, but also for the cultural milieu that was the US in the 1920s. Characters are well-developed and a reader (at least this one) comes to know and respect them (or not, as the author desires). I highly recommend this entire series.

I love this entire series. Easy fast read. I think I like The Benedict Bastard the best.

wonderful books

Loved all three books, wish there were more of them,so disappointed when they ended.Maybe Cate will write some more books.

Enjoyed this series

All three of the books in this series kept me interested from cover to cover. I easily related to the characters and the era. Really needed the review of history and geography, and hang on every word from the author.

After full excitement of Chapter's 1 & 2 this storyline declined into shear BOREDOM after which, I had to DELETE. Such A Big Let Down. Not sure if it was the narrator the story or both; it all became a lot of drivel.

El comienzo del libro es engorroso por lo reiterativo. Luego se agiliza y resulta más interesante. Incluso no es parejo en la calidad de su prosa que tiene buenos momentos. Se reconoce si una investigación histórica prolija.

Melodramatic farce

What a let down after the Wolf Border. The plot was very poor and the characters irritating. There was too much Mills & Boon in there to make it bearable. The whole thing had an air of unreality about which made the writing seem very immature. None of this was helped by the Thesp who read it- every sentence was utterly over read!

Absolutely astonishing. I was completely engulfed in this world. 10/10 would read many more times.

Drive the River Road!

Gripping story. Needed to find out how it would turn out for the characters. A good listen on a road trip!

Wonderful story, narration - had me hooked

I really enjoyed listening to this one. The narrator kept me hooked, the characters were all clear, developed personalities, and relatable - likable or not.

It's a cool look at a moment in history from a unique perspective, a story that pits ingrained culture against individual morality and growth with some graphic adventure, companionship, exploring loss and how our memories shape us.

I loved the pacing and felt like I was watching a riveting movie while listening - I hope they make this into a film - it would definitely be rated R for graphic language and violence, reminds me of a Tarantino-esque piece.

drawn in

I wasn't sure the first couple of chapters, but Ben quickly turned up the narration and pulled me into this mystic river road world. the audible is great because the author does a great job with all of the characters. I'm looking forward to more

I beleive this author will be putting his unique spin on many more stories with his pulp fiction type feel.

Started well and went downhill

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the characters had been less annoying! The "independent" lady seemed to accept the arrogance, selfishnish and verging on violent "hero". It started off really interesting and I thought it would be about the characters in the playhouse. I enjoyed the victorian atmosphere and particularly Carlo. I continued listening to see if the hero would get his comeuppance.

What could Rosie Thomas have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The two main characters could have had a different storyline!

I found it strange that people could find the hero attractive - he hinted several times that he could/would rape her.

Atmospheric tale of late Victorian music hall life

I chose The Illusionists after reading the blurb and being attracted by the concept of intrigue and mystery against the backdrop of a magician's stage show. Like most of us, the glamour of magic and illusion is appealing to me, and I had visions of a tale something like the Christian Bale film 'The Prestige', with competition and camaraderie between the main protagonists ending in potential conflict.

As it turned out, this was a little more mundane in terms of story, but very entertaining nonetheless. I couldn't really work out what genre the author was aiming for - thriller, period piece, romance - as the book has elements of all of these. There is a slight nod to the supernatural too, but only a hint which is developed far more in the sequel novel. The characters of Eliza and Devil are infuriating and appealing at the same time.

2nd Go Round

Listening to series for 2nd time, waiting for "The Potato Thief". Love this story. Make the Movie.

This is exactly what historical fiction should be!

Would you consider the audio edition of Mercy Row to be better than the print version?

Not better, just equally as good, and in a convenient format.

Jacob. He's a gritty, yet compassionate, protagonist. He does the best he can in a world filled with bad guys and seedy businesses. His development, from a spoiled punk kid into a true mob boss, is riveting throughout the course of the story.

What about Rick Myerss performance did you like?

Excellent voice. Soothing, but with an edge. He doesn't "overperform" but you can hear some distinction among the characters. His performance only adds to an already-compelling story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I couldn't stop the audio even for a second, it was simply fascinating. Just carried the phone with me everywhere all night.

I'm really looking forward to the next book! In fact, I'm planning to gift the set of both to my father, who's a fan of Clive Cussler and Ian Fleming books. I know he'll love this story: it's every bit as exciting, but the characters are deeper, in my opinion. Jacob in particular. He's "one of the boys" but has surprising human qualities that make him more well-rounded than your average two dimensional hero.

Sensitive listeners should be advised that there is violence and explicit language throughout the book - reflecting the world these characters live in and, personally, I thought it only added to the story. These gangsters sure can turn a colorful phrase.
