Length: 6 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-10-15
    Publisher: Nautilus Publishing Company
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
This Side of the River told from multiple narrators, is a gritty tale that takes place in the summer of 1865 after the Confederacy has collapsed. A contingent of young Civil War widows who have survived General Sherman's March to the Sea rally around a teenage, Christ-haunted Texas Ranger named Cat Harvey to travel to Ohio to burn down Sherman's home.
This compelling tale explores themes of trauma, revenge, redemption, and the disorder known then as nostalgia or soldier's heart. Author Corey Mesler proclaimed This Side of the River yarn-spinning of the highest order. Stayton's narrative, which gives Confederate soldiers' body servants a voice that few Civil War stories do, will burn bright long after you've finished the book.

Very Dark-did not really care for it
The idea of this book is interesting especially with the roles of women deemed appropriate for this time in history. However, the main character develops into something very disturbing . I could not finish the book . Also there are scenes of violence against women that are offensive.
The best part of this book were the different narrators. They were excellent.

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-05-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Man is a delicate mechanism...he can easily be set off course.
It is the late 18th century, and a young Sicilian nobleman, Vitellio Scarpia, finds himself penniless and in disgrace on the streets of Rome. After leaving his home to pursue a military career, his impulsive and undisciplined nature has led to his expulsion from Spanish royal guard, and he must now seek his fortune in Italy - a fortune inseparably bound up with the ruler of the Eternal City, the Pope.
Scarpia enrolls in the papal army and becomes the lover of an alluring countess who introduces him into Roman society, with its blend of religiosity, sophistication, and intrigue. Half enthralled, half appalled, Scarpia enjoys the life of the decadent city, learning in due course that as an unsophisticated provincial he is no match for the worldliness of Rome.
Patronized by a powerful cardinal, Scarpia is sent on a mission to Venice, where he encounters the beautiful, exquisitely gifted singer Floria Tosca. As the armies of revolutionary France invade Italy, and war and revolution engulf the whole peninsula, the lives of the two become fatefully entwined.
Piers Paul Read brilliantly reimagines the infamous villain of Puccini's opera, Tosca, telling a story that shines a light into the dusty corridors of history and the dark corners of the human soul.
    Members Reviews:
    The Scarpia you never knew
"Scarpia" is a complex endeavorâa novel that fleshes out the life of the notorious villain of Puccini's opera "Tosca." Piers Paul Read imagines the future Baron Scarpia as a young nobleman from Sicily trying to navigate a world unhinged by conflicts between old traditions and republican ideals fueled by the French Revolution. The author has done the scholarly work necessary to give credibility and texture to his narrative. As a result, the book can sometimes seem more like history than fiction, but its Italian perspective on Napoleonic ambitions makes it all feel fresh. Like Scarpia, the singer Floria Tosca and other characters familiar from the opera receive plenty of lively backstory. Obviously, the author faces the problem of readers who know exactly where his book is heading, but that's part of the pleasure of the tale. So if the final pages take an operatic turn in style and action (with a twist or two), it seems appropriate. Yet I think "Scarpia" might still be an engaging read for someone who has never heard of Puccini.

Creative and interesting take on one of opera's most villainous characters. The author presents a detailed and interesting political and social backdrop the the events leading up to Puccini's opera. Scarpia, as portrayed int the book, is a multifaceted humane character with sympathetic traits whose life is more directed by the unstoppable social/political ramifications of the era than by personal greed or lust.
A must read for all operaphiles.
Bravo Signore Read! Bravo Signorina Tosca!
Spellbinding and sensual historical drama. Meticulously researched and beautifully written with great panache - a fascinating study of human character in the bloody wake of the French Revolution.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-04-15
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
From postpunk Brighton to revolutionary Angola, an incredible coming-of-age story that stretches across nations and decades, reminding us what it really means to come home.
It's 1988 at the University of Sussex, where kids sport Mohawks and light up to the otherworldly sounds of the Cocteau Twins, as conversation drifts from structuralism to Thatcher to the bloody Labour students. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, David Heller has taken a job as a live-in aide to current quadriplegic and former playboy Hans Bromwell - in part to extend his stay studying abroad, but, in truth, he's looking to escape his own family, still paralyzed by the death of his younger sister 10 years on.
When David moves into the Bromwell house, his life becomes quickly entwined with those of Hans; his alcoholic sister, Elizabeth; and her beautiful, fatherless daughter as they navigate their new roles as fallen aristocracy. As David befriends the Bromwells, the details behind the family's staggering fall from grace are slowly revealed: how Elizabeth's love affair with a Portuguese physician carried the young English girl right into the bloody battlefields of colonial Africa, where an entire continent bellowed for independence, and a single event left a family broken forever.
A sweeping debut by a seasoned political reporter, written in prose as lush and evocative as it is deeply funny, No. 4 Imperial Lane artfully shifts through time, from the high politics of embassy backrooms and the bloody events of a ground war to the budding romance found in pot-filled dorm rooms and those unforgettable moments when childhood gives way to becoming an adult.
Reminiscent of Nick Hornby and Alan Hollinghurst, here is a book about the intersection of damaged lives, a book that asks whether it is possible for an unexpected stranger to piece a family back together again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Like the plays of Shakespeare, whose lines float through these pages, Weisman's debut novel is full of love, ambition, scheming, and family dysfunction." (David Abrams, author of Fobbit)
"A dazzling debut, full of generous heart and insightful detail into England at the end of the '80s. I could not put this one down!" (Kristopher Jansma, author of The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards)
"Jonathan Weisman's prose is thrilling, visceral. It grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. A brilliant debut." (Deborah Copaken Kogan, New York Times best-selling author of The Red Book)
    Members Reviews:
Three great books come together to make something even better
Jonathan Weisman's first novel, No. 4 Imperial Lane, does not start out very well. In the first pages David Weller, an American student looking to prolong his stay in England, shows up as a volunteer to help take care of a quadriplegic, Hans Bromwell. His romantic notions of a Hawkings-like figure are instantly shattered when he discovers Hans is more like a "grumbling skull attached to a lifeless body" (a description from later in the book) living in a room that "smelled of s*** and vapor rub.

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In the spring of 1946, ex-corporal Sam Richardson returns home from the "forgotten war" in Burma to his hometown of Wigton in Cumbria, England, to the joyful relief of his young wife, Ellen. He finds a town in which, seemingly, little has changed: the same twisting alleys, weavers' cottages, and medieval archways and the same lack of prospects for an uneducated, working-class man like himself.
Sam, however, has changed. The war has not only left him with traumatic memories, which he tries to suppress, but also given him greater self-confidence and broadened his horizons. From her wartime jobs, Ellen too has gained a sense of independence she does not want to give up. And then there's six-year-old Joe, a baby when Sam volunteered, who can scarcely remember his father. As all three strive to adjust, the bonds of love and loyalty become stretched to the breaking point.
With this absorbing story of one family, Melvyn Bragg conveys the experience of millions in the aftermath of the Second World War. The Soldier's Return is a taut, profoundly moving novel by a writer at the height of his powers.

    Coming Home
The parts about Burma, and the reunion of the soldiers were good. Unfortunately, I had a difficult time with Sam's wife, Ellen, and their son, Joe. Ellen obviously had a difficult time during the war, but she didn't seem to be willing to meet Sam half way in looking for solutions to their problems. Joe was irritating to say the least. Talk about an Oedipus Complex! I believe Joe is the focus of the 2nd book in the trilogy too so I doubt that I will read it.
Way too long and drawn out. Yawn.
I did actually read the entire book, though I kept wondering why. Someone should have edited this book to 1/3 its length, and insisted the author give more resolution at the end. The entire plot was the slowly growing angst, and the resolution never happened except abruptly in the last few paragraphs. I did enjoy the setting, but so not worth the time investment. Sorry.

    Title: Checkmate Run
    Author: Allan Alexander

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-30-15
    Publisher: Skyboat Media, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Checkmate Run is a real-life thriller that chronicles the author's life as a writer, medical student, and physician in Moscow during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s and his struggle to survive the brutal Soviet regime.
Alex Loevsky is a medical student and an inspiringly rebellious poet who becomes enmeshed in a battle against the rampant cruelty of the communist rule, where the simple desire to think freely is a crime on par with treason, and being born Jewish is more than a mere hindrance.
When Alex witnesses the murder of a dissident who seeks to expose to the Western world the tortuous reality of life in the Soviet Union, it leads him to the core of the human rights activists' underground. Alex's life becomes a death-dealing game of chess, where in order to survive he must remain one step ahead of his ruthless opponent - the KGB's second chief directorate. The KGB agents are vicious and closing in, and Alex's odds of escaping are bleak. The inevitable checkmate will either bring him freedom...or death.
Checkmate Run is an adrenaline rush of a novel that examines the value and fragility of life, love, and freedom, which most of us take for granted.

    An Incredible Read!
I grew up during the early "duck and cover" days of the Cold War. There was plenty of red scare propaganda back then, but (obviously), we couldn't read about someone's first hand experience in the "USSR," as it was known at that time. Dr Allan Alexander's book changed all that for me - what an incredible story...of love, of family, of survival, and of perseverance!
Checkmate Run is well written and the prose is tight. Dr Alexander's precise word choices for describing people and situations make this book a delight for the reader. The author doesn't waste your time with any unnecessary drivel; everything is well thought out, fast paced and deeply absorbing. I couldn't put this book down!
I have recommended this book to many people since reading it. I would especially recommend it to those that grew up in the shadows of the Cold War on this side of the Iron Curtain. If this book doesn't fill you with gratitude for the freedoms we so often take for granted, then perhaps you missed the Preface and didn't realize that the author LIVED this story!
If I had to identify one thing that I wanted to find in the book, it would be a complete copy of the poem, "The Salvaged Hope." Since there are multiple references to it, I found myself wanting to read it. Since Dr Allan Alexander wasn't able to carry any copies of the magazine bearing the publication of his poems out of his motherland, it is possible they are forever lost to us. This is one of the sad tragedies of censorship - history is forever incomplete.
A+ novel.... Full of suspense... Love it!!
What a phenomenal novel. A Truly remarkable one!!

    Wonderfully written and great story
I have been an avid reader most of my life. I have read an unaccountable number of all types of books. Checkmate Run" is one of the best books I have read. It is extremely well written, grabbed and held my attention. The characters are well portrayed and are described so well that they have a very real quality. The story and plot are easy to follow.

The mission to the Great South Sea will test their loyalties and strength and define the characters of Captain Blackwell and his lady in Blackwell's Paradise.
    Critic Reviews:
"Not for the faint hearted - Captain Blackwell pulls no punches! Prepare for a right roaring romp in the company of two of the most captivating characters in historical fiction." (Alaric Bond, author of Turn A Blind Eye and the Fighting Sail series)
    Members Reviews:
Adventure and Romance with Blackwell & Mercedes in the Hawaiian Islands
Her previous novel,"Captain Blackwellâs Prize" falls equally well in the categories of nautical adventure and historical romance. It is the sort of novel that readers of C.S. Forester and Patrick OâBrian can enjoy along with fans of Jane Austen and Daphne du Maurier." Ulett continues this balance between adventure and romance in Blackwell's Paradise, with Captain James Blackwell and his wife, Mercedes, beginning on a Royal Navy frigate, sailing on a mission to the Pacific, and continuing, somewhat unexpectedly, on the Hawaiian islands. In parallel stories, Ulett captures the wild life among battling Hawaiian kingdoms, as well as the early settlement of Honolulu, where fur traders, whalers and the naval ships of several nations all compete for trade with the islands. Blackwell and Mercedes, individually and together, are well drawn and fascinating characters on both the familiar surroundings of a Royal Navy ship and the more exotic environs of the Sandwich Islands. Great fun. Highly recommended.
    A great historical read
Well written, historically accurate, exciting and romantic. Doesn't wear one out with author's need to show off his knowledge or expertise of ships and sailing, yet give enough detail that one pictures the action of any sailing situation. Realistic action without giving characters supernatural powers. Thoroughly enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to next book in this series.
    Such a treat!
So fun to spend time with Blackwell and Mercedes again. It's a rip-roaring story in the tradition of Patrick O'Brian, a charming romance, and a great view into the fascinating culture and history of early 19c Hawai'i. Thoroughly entertaining, and I learned so much as well!
    AWESOME READ!
GREAT CHARACTERS AND WONDERFUL PLOT, THIS WAS EVEN BETTER THAT THE FIRST BLACKWELL NOVEL.I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK TO BE PUBLISHED.

This is a translation from English into German. The German is a little harder than other books in German that I have read. One word that was only used once in the whole book was unknown to a German national with a German degree in literature. The word was Zote which means a dirty joke.
