Critic Reviews:

"Beautifully and brilliantly controlled. A triumph." (John Julius, on Miss Garnet's Angel)

"Absorbing, subtle and utterly joyous." (Sunday Times, on The Cleaner of Chartres)

Members Reviews:

Complicated family saga

Would have liked a family tree

Several characters had more than one name which was confusing

Otherwise a gripping story

exceptional!

The narrators were wonderful and truly brought the story to life, I thoroughly recommend this carefully woven family drama.

Intriguing if tortuous.....

While I enjoyed this book on the whole - well-written and well-read - I did find the story difficult to follow at times, because of its rather tortuous and rambling nature, and the strain of keeping pace with the various characters and their nicknames. The central character, Will, is evidently meant to be seen as complex and charismatic, but (to me, at any rate) was merely unlikeable, which made it harder to engage with the story at times. However, the real strength of this novel lies in the compellingly claustrophobic atmosphere built up by close family relationships and the subtle ways in which shared secrets and memories shift and alter over time. There is a reflectiveness and wisdom in the author's observations which make it well worth listening to, probably more than once.

Very good read as historical novel

A very good read. Manageable number of characters, good development. Plot reasonably foreseeable and historical framework accurate and accessible for modern readers. Do not expect all definitions to appear in digital Duden, however.

Ii enjoyed this book

Although it seemed there were inconsistencies in the story. Going to read the next volume. 5more words required for this rating.

The beauty is in the details!

What did you love best about The Archer's Son?

While being entertained by an engaging coming-of-age tale, the reader's experience is enhanced by the subtle, well-researched details of material culture, social structure, arms & armor, military tactics, etc., which all work together to offer a window to the 15th century.

Any additional comments?

This is an entertaining story for all ages - as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed it - but I believe that it is a particularly good selection for young adults with an interest in history. Better yet, it is a fine book to cultivate that interest in young adults who love a good story.. and may not yet realize that they are fascinated by history!

Critic Reviews:

"A beautiful, rich tale...the deep joy of this book is in its portrayal of everyday life in a harsh time. Gripping and highly recommended." (The Times)

"The deep historical detail and the beautiful descriptive language makes this a really cracking read." (The Bookbag)

Four Stars

much better than most Celtic/historical books. well written and well researched and not a soppy love story

A fascinating tale of the Dark Ages

Four women from different social ranks are at the heart of this Dark Ages tale set in England: Saethryth the steward's daughter, Wynn the blacksmith's daughter, Auli the spy's daughter, and Elfrun who is the daughter of the Wolf. When Elfrun's father is sent to Rome on a mission by the king, Donmouth estate is left in her hands. Young and inexperienced, she does her best to govern, despite the pressure her grandmother puts upon her to enter a convent and take the veil. At the same time, a dangerous man returns to the community, and he wants to wed his son to her. As time passes, Elfrun does not know her father's fate, but she is determined to keep the estate and all the people in her care in good standing.

Author Victoria Whitworth did an exceptional job of bringing to life the hardships of the Dark Ages, and the plight of women during that time. Unique scenes such as the whale harvest made for a fascinating read. The characters and their inter-relationships to each other were beautifully fleshed out, along with the intriguing setting, and an ending that was utterly satisfying. A medieval novel that is sure to keep you flipping pages until the end. Highly recommended.

is just coming of age with great responsibility and besides being faced with normal young girl ...

This story takes place around 850. So imagine lots of organic lands and emotions. The main character, Elfrun, is just coming of age with great responsibility and besides being faced with normal young girl issues such as crushes and learning how to grow into an adult, she is also faced with adult decisions.

I can honestly say that there was plenty of mystery in a number of things in the storyline. Without creating spoilers, I will say that I couldn't wait to pick up my Kindle every night and get lost in these lands. The things that I'd hoped for didn't always happen but yet ultimately they ended in a way that makes me suggest How about a sequel that starts from here? I would definitely pick delve into that as well!

Think chivalry, metalsmithing, cloaks, farms and lush landscapes.
