An engaging historical story that will hold you captive from start to finish!

Firstly, I just have to mention the stunning cover of THE SECRET OF SUMMERHAYES by Merryn Allingham. While the image above is lovely it does not do justice to this richly coloured and atmospheric cover that made me pick it up straight away and dive into its pages.

Now onto the novel itself.

It is the summer of 1944 and the army has arrived in force at Summerhayes estate, which is nothing new as the crumbling manor has been the home to soldiers for a while now. In a small section of the house lives Alice Summer, the owner of the estate, and her last remaining helpers, Mr. Ripley, and Bethany Merston. Bethany, who acts as a companion to Alice, is trained as a school teacher but when her school was destroyed by the war, she was lucky to find the job in Summerhayes, even if Alice can be a handful at times. When strange letters begin to arrive that haunt Alice, it soon becomes apparent that somebody wants to scare her or worse.

Can Bethany with the help of a certain soldier, uncover the truth? And as they delve into the past history of Summerhayes will the truth destroy Alice?

THE SECRET OF SUMMERHAYES by Merryn Allingham is a richly layered historical story that paints a picture for you as you get lost in the drama. There are so many in-depth and likeable characters in this story and you immediately become connected to what is happening and need to know how it ends. That's not to say that all of the characters have that effect - I won't name the one that made my skin crawl from the very beginning, I'll let you find that out for yourselves.

âThe harsh reality of the war is depicted expertly throughout, and Summerhayes comes alive as we begin to imagine what it used to look like in its former glory and then in its shambling ruins. There is a dark and mysterious undercurrent that runs throughout this story and as Bethany makes it her mission to protect Alice from the past, she soon realises that to keep Alice safe she has to dig up old memories and many secrets and betrayals will come to light.

THE SECRET OF SUMMERHAYES by Merryn Allingham is everything I hoped it would be and so much more, and I am now going on a shopping spree to treat myself to some of the author's other titles - The Buttonmaker's Daughter, The Girl from Cobb Street, The Nurse's War, and Daisy's Long Road Home.

Absolutely gripping!!

Could not put this book down. Excellent insight into how it was for mill workers in Victorian times and a fantastic ghost story tying the past and the present.

Good read!

Put simply, I really enjoyed this book.

I love the Brontes and Haworth and so the subject matter drew me initially. However, it was the intermingling of past and present that kept me totally involved.

Will be seeking other works from this author. The narration in the flat Yorkshire accent was just perfect and made me rethink my perceptions of the Brontes entirely.

This is a short prequel to RISUKO and the reader is first introduced to Chiyome, a woman who has seen enough of sorrow and loss. A hundred years of war has delivered nothing but loss to all. The future promises more of the same. Until...Mieko and Kuniko. When Chiyome is first introduced to the two girls she believes they are shrine maidens. However, a bit of trouble visits the two girls during the night and Chiyome witnesses a remarkable moment of strength and honor. It is then that Chiyome realized that Mieko and Kuniko must be trained KUNOICHI, an anonymous army. Invisible.

Love a story with a kickass heroine! This prequel is just enough to peak one's curiosity. It's a promising adventure.

Another Great Book From Jim Yoakum

As someone who has enjoyed several of Jim Yoakum's books, when I was offered a review copy ofThe Greatest Living EnglishmanI leapt at the chance to read and review it. One thing that strikes me with Jim Yoakum is that with every book he writes, he attempts to do something new. While many authors rely on convention and patterns, Yoakum makes every effort to produce an original and intriguing piece every time he publishes. The Greatest Living Englishman is no exception to this. Bumbling, pompous, lowbrow Colin Millaney is the quintessential anti-hero thrust into the bosom of high society at the birth of the roaring twenties. Millaney, who possesses all the pride and grandeur of Oscar Wilde with none of the talent to back it up, is much more analogous to a modern day grumbling Jeremiah in his common unfiltered view of the world. Yoakum mixes fictional symbolic characters with actual historic figures in this short story that is sure to please. The audio version is a fully immersive experience, with an excellent narrator, and a consistent ambiance that bring the scenes to life. My biggest criticism would be the long pauses between chapters. Some went on for so long that I thought my iPod had frozen. If you can get past that, the story itself is a definite winner.

I enjoyed this book the character development was done very well by the author. The narrator did a good job in bringing this story to life with different voices and well chosen sound effects. This book is not too long, and a great way to pass the time.

Funny book and I like the sound effects on it

This was an interesting and entertaining book. It was pretty short, but I thought the author did a good job of developing his characters. I thought it was quite funny and there were a few parts of the book where I laughed out loud. I listened to the Audible audio edition narrated by Tony Green. I liked his narration a lot, and I liked the added sound effects. The production quality, however, could use some improvement. The pauses between chapters were a bit too long.

I loved this book

I loved this book. It's touching, humorous, and very real all at the same time. Having been about the same age as the author during the 80s, and having moved to New York City in 1990 as a young artist, a lot of the descriptions and scenarios ring so true and bring back memories I had forgotten. However I'm sure the time period and context don't exclude other generations of readers from other parts of the world; most of us over 25 can relate to what this self-reflective, quirky, articulate narrator is talking about. Highly recommend.

Easy to read

This was that kind of book that you begin and then just fall into â it was engaging and effortless to read. There have been so many stories set in Manhattan and here we go, another one, but I mean, how many narrators give you two coming-of-age stories?!

At the core were Francesca Variani, Italian Catholic, and the Jewish Kendrick Lowenstein, who met as students at Barnard. Chess (Francesca) is inadvertently engulfed in Kendra's dysfunctional family, but her own family was so dysfunctional that she couldn't be objective. I thought it an interesting note that both girls shared the experience of cold emotionless mothers and useless fathers, one distant, the other cruel.

I loved this book on so many levels. The author's descriptions of New York neighborhoods and subways give the setting genuine depth. When she said that Los Sures had Dominican or Puerto Rican flags hanging which looked like something from a Childe Hassam painting, I knew exactly what she meant.

There's a small roster of characters, some more preplexing than others, but you're not left trying to keep track of who did what.. She nailed Clarice in one paragraph: "Lunch with Clarice was an exercise in what it was to be a WASP.

Past meets Present

Both the author and narrator were new to me. I loved how this book had multiple stories woven into one. The tragic love story based on Indian myth, the poem as a basis for legend, and the current love story. The author and narrator are extremely talented. Being familiar with the Harbor Springs area, I was especially drawn into the story with the interesting historical and present day perspectives. I found myself caring deeply about the main characters and could not put the book down. I highly recommend this book!

I have to admit I wasn't sure if I was going to like it at first, but it soon grabbed me and I now rank it right up there with the best I have heard. It took me into a whole other world, and isn't that what good entertainment is supposed to do?

I felt like I came to know and more importantly care about the characters and my attention was held throughout the story.

What did you like best about this story?

I thought the author captured the essence of what Native American life might have been like and I found it very believable and listenable. I know she had a lot of work invested in doing research, and it paid off in my opinion. It kept my interest.

They were people from a different time and culture facing human situations - something everyone can relate to from any generation.

Very romantic!

This was written as a diary and was a wonderful insight into the relationship Jefferson had with his wife and their true love story. I enjoyed it and would recommend it highly. Gives a new perspective on who the real Mr. Jefferson was as a man and a human being. There is no way a reader would ever think he fathered any children by Sally Hemming. Perhaps his scoundrel brother who lived with Jefferson, but certainly not Thomas.

Jefferson Still Lives

Writer Roberta Grimes' first novel is a marvel. A historical novel whose detail, scope, and depth seem much greater than the book's slightly more than 300 pages. "My Thomas" captures the complicated nature and depth of Thomas Jefferson's wife, Martha, who died just ten years after the couple was married-- and whom Jefferson mourned the rest of his life.

The novel is presented as Martha's own journal of her life with Thomas, and the hand of the author is neither seen nor felt anywhere in the book. The reader is totally immersed in Martha's life, in the person she must have been.

Grimes' mastery of the tone of life in late 18th century Virginia is complete. Her characters live, breathe, and speak with such truth and realism that the reader is drawn unconsciously into the complicated and fascinating lives of Martha and Thomas.

Thomas Jefferson's love for his Martha was so total that, when she died, he destroyed their correspondence in his grief. This deep love fuels the lives of both characters as the tides of the Revolutionary War ebb and flow, and American independence becomes a reality.

Grimes' poetic style captures the details and the currents of Martha's life. "My Thomas" is a superbly crafted exploration of the lives of two individuals made complete by one another.

Each character has his or her history and complexities. Details are rich, and beautiful moments are bountiful in this world of Monticello and the American Revolution.

First-Rate Invigorating Story

Radio Girls is a remarkable, captivating, and powerful story about determined, courageous,resilient women at the BBC during the turbulent years between WWI and WWII. Sarah-Jane Stratford magnificently intertwined history and fiction flawlessly in this most intriguing, captivating, biographical historical novel.

While this story follows the fictional character of Maisie, it is also a factual account of the life of one of Britonâs most influential woman, Hilda Matheson. Hilda's intelligence and perception transformed the airwaves as BBC's first Director of Talks enlightening and self-assuring the women of her time.

The story started out slow, but it was needed so one would know the backgrounds of both the real and fictional characters and how they fit together. It didn't take long before the story took off sweeping me back in time to the 1920s with intrigue and drama and it never lets go. I was drawn into the story as though I was one of the girls working right along with Maisie and Hilda in the Talks department. I wish it never had to come to an end.

Radio Girls as a whole was a fascinating look into the BBC during 1920s London which fully captivated me from beginning to end. I absolutely highly recommend this first-rate invigorating story.

Interesting mystery for fans of the early days of radio

'Radio Girls' is set in a pivotal and exciting part of British history, when the British Broadcasting Company (as it was originally called) was in its early days. With the exception of the protagonist, virtually all the characters involved are real people, although, of course, attributed dialogue between them is the author's invention. A young woman is hired as a secretary and, as she progresses in her career, she begins to suspect that dangerous secrets are being concealed that could have national and international repercussions.

The book is very well researched but sometimes reads like a mix between Nancy Drew and Barbara Cartland with the lead character constantly blushing and stammering with her heart hammering in her chest.

Good one, but not for young kids...

I bought the book for my daughter and thankfully she didnt listen first. There was a bit too much sexual content and gore.

But, for me it was a pretty cool book. Very descriptive about battles and sea life.

Londres, 1852. Helen, préceptrice de deux enfants dans une riche famille, répond à une annonce qui propose à des jeunes femmes de partir épouser des Britanniques installés en Nouvelle-Zélande. Sur le bateau qui la mène à Christchurch, elle se lie avec Gwyneira, une jeune noble galloise qui immigre à cause des difficultés financières de son père. L'amitié entre les deux femmes sera indéfectible malgré les épreuves, les désillusions et la haine, surtout, qui déchirera leurs deux familles. Mais elles auront la joie de voir leurs enfants s'unir et inventer une nouvelle vie, en osmose avec les autochtones et la nature.
