Sometimes the neatest things can come to be from someone you might think to be...not so neat. All throughout history, history gets redefined by the misfits and oddballs who want to do more than just "fit in". Crusty Bigglebones is that type of kid. Life may not be a bowl of cherries in the beginning for Crusty, but it turns out to be delightfully fruitful for him in the end.
Members Reviews:
Don't judge a person by their appearance
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review. I thought that this was a great lesson to all that you can not judge a person by their appearance. Crusty was a very smart kid he invented a bubble to go into space in. He got to meet the President this really gave him the confidence to go out and do more he was secure in himself and cleaned up and changed his outlook on life and himself.
Three Stars
good but a little short
Treating everyone kind no matter their appearance!
"Never judge a book by it's cover!" In other words don't judge people by their appearance because everyone is unique in their own way!
Life's GREAT Lessons!
As a young mom, I worked for the (Twin Falls, ID) Head Start Program for a number of years. Four-year-old children are - from my observation/perspective - accepting, open and naturally inclusive. Sadly, as children mature, exclusion often becomes part of their school-age personas. Lord Toph's short, charming book, CRUSTY BIGGLEBONES, addresses exclusion from a kind, gentle perspective.
I enjoyed this, wonderfully illustrated, VERY quick and easy read! The story was uplifting and positive - I love books I can close with a smile!! I was given the opportunity to (separately) download an audio enhancement and that added, immensely, to my enjoyment! I HIGHLY recommend that parents read this book, over and over again, with their young children!! Five, well-deserved, stars!
Note: I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
While I didnât hate it I probably would if I paid for the experience
Iâm not sure what Crusty Bigglebones actually is, I know itâs a picture book (although when I picked it up I didnât, but then that is the fault of Reading Deals, as they only give a short paragraphs worth of info, I thought I was getting a short story about an oddball who couldnât fit in, instead I got a picture book), but I donât mean what type of book, I mean the point of the story.
Short stories, to me at any rate, are supposed to be funny little romps, have enjoyable pictures or teach a moral lesson, otherwise I donât see the point of them so much.
I couldnât see a moral lesson in Crusty though, I mean maybe that washing is a good idea? Because Crusty starts off un washed and unsuccessful, but his success and cleanliness seem to happen at the same time so maybe thatâs it?
So how about the pictures? You can either call them heavily stylized or not very good, depending on how eloquently you like to critique things. Personally I canât say I enjoyed them, with reasonably flat compositions and a very squiggly style. I canât speak for the paperback version since I had a black and white kindle version to work with but Iâm not sure how much colour would have improved things.
And finally is it fun? It was â fine, sometimes it rhymed and sometimes it didnât, so Iâm not sure what was going on there.
