This volume proves that the assertion that women are the gentler sex is frequently an unfounded and unlikely description. From the minds and pens of some of the best female writers of the last century comes a series of macabre, twisted tales that are anything but gentle. But as they weave their magic - usually black - and entrance you with their narratives you just know that sugar and spice and everything nice are not likely to be what all girls really are made of - and certainly not these femme fatales....

    Publisher's Summary:
While many of Boswell's journals have been published, this one gained popularity for its racier entries as well as its descriptions of Boswell's first encounter with Samuel Johnson, who would later be the subject of his most famous written work, the biography Life of Johnson.
This audiobook contains a wonderful reading by the talented Sir Anthony Quale.
    Members Reviews:
    Some parts funny, some boring...
But overall pretty interesting and entertaining diary of a vain and amorous young man in London in the eighteenth century. He is quite explicit about his sexual encounters, his bouts with venereal diseases, the women he engages with, etc. but it is also a good reference for the cost of living, the clothing of the era, the food and meals, which he describes in great detail and in general, the life of a somewhat idle but ambitious fellow. Also politics come into play as almost everything of the day was political. Worth reading if you have an interest in the era.
Boswell in London: a literary monument unfairly neglected
Daily life in London in the early 1760s comes to life in this journal, in which Boswell is already experimenting with detailed narrative and dramatized dialogue, elements that made his "Life of Johnson" the world-class model of biography. From coffee house conversations to cockfights to intrigues with women, what's not to like? And you can't do better than Frederick Pottle as an editor. His introduction is most helpful, too. You don't need to be an expert on the 18th century to enjoy this book!
    The charming James Boswell
James Boswell, 22 years old, leaves his home in Scotland to live the city life in London. He records his adventures and thoughts in this journal which has been wonderfully edited and annotated by Frederick Pottle. Boswell relates the life of a young man living on a small allowance in London while freely sharing his thoughts and ambitions to be a man of the world. Reading his constant self-exhortations to behave with more dignity and gravitas is a delight. Boswell is a very likable young man who often behaves with compassion and always with self-awareness. I am so glad to have the opportunity to learn about and share his world.
    Poor modern time
Poor modern time, that was the time of , back then, of syphilis and the kind -petite verole - grande verole- that was not easily cured- BUT human lust is greater than life saving measure-re member AIDS?
Now it is not only about sex ( yes a lot ) but also about like Jules Renard wrote his every day life- here life in London---
You are in your flat open the door and..Flash----you are a witness, even better- a part of it.
Ageless memoir of youthful vitality, ambition, affection
Superb, fun, instructive, saucy. Boswell's misadventures in London at the age of 22-23, as he attempted to launch his ambitious professional, intellectual and amorous careers, to the distress of his moderate, virtuous father. Give to any kid about to graduate from college.

Dickens is a name that dominates the landscape of English novelists. His works are masterpieces and he is held everywhere in the highest regard. In his fairly short life of 58 years he accomplished an extraordinary number of classic novels, especially in light of his humble and poor beginnings. Here we collect together his slim number of poems. Concise it may be, but from the mind of the master it most certainly reveals some insights of great interest.

This classic tale, set in the jungle of the Belgian Congo, tells the story of Marlow's search for the powerful and possibly deranged Kurtz, in an atmosphere of evil. This novel was later adapted and updated by Francis Ford Coppola as his film Apocalypse Now.
    Members Reviews:
I like the writing of Conrad and Heart of darkness is ...
I have read some of the extremely detailed comments from some people. I like the writing of Conrad and Heart of darkness is no exception. To me some people read too much into what Conrad wrote. To me he simply wanted to critisize the grossly inefficiant and incompetent Belgian colonisation of the Congo. The inefficiency is highlighted by the 3 month wait for rivets to repair the steamer. The station managers of the "company" are grotesque and stupid. Kurtz has gone "local" and the reference to the feathered women parading up and down, indicates that Kurtz is lost to Western society. I read the book several times and love the atmosphere Conrad describes. A classic too is the decription of how the Romans found England going up the Thames (In the beginning of the book).
This is the best edition of the best novella-length story ever written -- ...
This is the best edition of the best novella-length story ever written -- an absolute masterpiece, and the accompanying background and critical materials in the Norton edition are invaluable. (Tip: Don't skip Conrad's letter in which he describes his "method" of writing!) This is a difficult, complex story that, if you read far enough into it, will grab you and will not let go until the very last sentence. A work of genius on multiple levels! If you haven't read it, read it now! If you have read it, read the historical and analytical materials in this edition and then read it again!
    Powerful prose
Marlow, a reflective and thoughtful seaman , relates a tale of his travel up the Congo river to a small group of men. Darkness is theme, darkness in men's hearts as they enclaves native people in theme quest for riches. Darkness of the jungle, the fog, the natives , the river and the conquest of land, people and resources.
Thud short story is beautifully written. The development of each character is so precise that one feels they personally know each participant in this powerful drama. This story will remain a classic.
Strange book, not exciting, but strange enough to get you to finish it.
This is a strange book, but it kind of keeps you reading. My son had to read thismin college and I remember he wrote a really good paper on it. I read it then too. It is very strange but keeps you with it, maybe because it is so strange. Not all that exciting, but strange
    Not the apocalypse I expected
Not exactly something I would read again, but certainly not as bad as I was expecting. I was told over and over how wordy and difficult it is. While it is wordy, I've read much worse!
Though some cry racism, I tend to disagree. Conrad was a man of his time and was subject to racist slurs himself. Look at the value this story has in all ways, not just take offence to certain remarks.
Then watch Apocalypse Now (and tell me how it was, I was too chicken!)
Read it for a university class.

    It's One Heavy Book
So I just wanted to let others know that this collection is one giant book of all Austen novels combined. You can't tell from the picture, but I was actually expecting (and hoping for) individual books packed in one box like other book collections I have. So I was definitely a bit disappointed when I received this book. And while I am used to reading large books like David McCullough biographies, this compilation is by far the heaviest I have in my possession. I'm not sure I will be able to read this in bed or even hold it up in my arms for any long period of time. So beware. I would have chosen differently if had this information when I was contemplating purchase.
    EMMA
A lot of water under the bridge since first reading this book many years ago. I do not know why I liked it so much them...possibly I was blinded by adolescents and want everyone to have a loving mate and played match maker myself thinking also I was above others..shame on me!! This book the second time around was so frustrating I could have screamed in parts. How dare Emma feel so superior in her small town and looked for others to make over in her image. How dare she play match maker with every eligible bachelor and made in the area thinking she knew best. Was she a true friend visiting all the families and offering her solicitations as if she were the queen and it being a big gift to shower her presence with others (all of whom she felt were inferior) on a regular basis.
Glad to have revisited this book and will revisit others but don't think they will be by Jane Austen. My book was downloaded onto my Kindle from Amazon.
Its starts off Emma becoming good friends with a girl named Harriet
Emma Woodhouse is a young girl growing up in a family of wealth and high class. Throughout the story, Emma becomes what some would call a matchmaker. Its starts off Emma becoming good friends with a girl named Harriet. Harriet doesnât know her parents therefore she doesnât have money or a high social ranking. Emma attempts to set her up with two different men and both come crashing down miserably. Emma attempts to help everyone Emma falls in love with a man by the name of Frank Churchill. She thinks they will wed, but later on you find out heâs already secretly engaged to a woman by the name of Jane. Emma is devastated by this but begins to reflect upon her feelings. She ends up confessing her love for her brother in law Mr.Knightley who has been guiding her throughout the story and Harriet marries Mr. Martin.
Jane Austenâs writing style was very witty, short, and sweet. She used clever wording that packs a punch in short sentences. The sentences could be unfinished and have dashed, which was used for emphasis on the urgentness and feeling of the character talking.

    Publisher's Summary:
The precursor of Jurassic Park. Somewhere in South America, there is a plateau; and roaming in its forests are dinosaurs. Only one man has ever been there, and his reports are so astonishing that no-one is prepared to believe him - except the extraordinary Professor Challenger. He decides to take a trip to prove beyond doubt that this lost world really exists. With the daredevil journalist Edward Malone, meticulous, sceptical Professor Summerlee, and the professional adventurer Lord John Roxton, Challenger sets out on a mission as dangerous as it is thrilling. Inspiring endless imitations, The Lost World is Sir Arthur Conan Doyles classic adventure of discovery.
    Editorial Reviews:
The aptly named Professor Challenger and young fortune seeker Edward Malone set forth on a journey of wonderment, discovery, and real-life dinosaurs. Sir Arthur Conan Doyles riveting tale of prehistoric adventure atop a remote plateau, surrounded by South American jungles, continues to inspire awe and amazement. Prolific video game voice Glend McCready lends grandeur and gaiety to the proceedings with his distinguished, upper-crust English elocution. This precursor to the modern-day cinematics of Jurassic Park treats listeners to vivid and vibrant descriptions of prehistoric beasts, unfamiliar races, and luscious landscapes.
    Members Reviews:
    Ok, but...
I liked the premise of the story, but it was not as well done as it could've been. I mean, two kids sneak off to go on a scientific expedition and end up on an island with dinosaurs? Parents are clueless? Really?? And too much philosophizing by Ian Malcolm. Harding was the star!
    The lost world - review
Very good read. Fast moving story, but nothing is lost with the fast pace. All characters fit the time period and the story.
Arthur Conan Doyle's Imagination in the Lost World
With an outdated and somewhat pedantic style the reader has to persevere to get to what is actually a good, imaginative and thoughtful storyline. The author has a few pokes at Edwardian morality and pomposity, in a somewhat tongue in cheek fashion. Despite the popular misconception of a dinosaur theme, it is human interactions, race and struggle that form the subtext.
    My Review
The Lost World was both my first foray into reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and my first experience reading a full-length e-book. First of all, my impressions of the electronic format for reading have been significantly improved by this experience. Although I still would prefer to read with a book in hand, I can appreciate the portability and convenience of this medium. I do not own an actual e-reader, so when I one day do own one, I may have to increase my current liking of the electronic format, but suffice it to say for the time being that I did not hate this format and using the Kindle for PC format provided by Amazon.com I enjoyed the fact that I could access my "book" at the place that I had left off from any of my computers whether at home, work or traveling.
My opinions of the novel itself could not be more glowing. For such a short novel, I am amazed that I found such richness in the characters, storyline, prose, action and content as I was exposed to in The Lost World. Doyle has done an amazing job of creating unique, interesting and fully fleshed out characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
Four classic comedies from one of the wittiest playwrights in Western literature: Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest, all featuring star-studded casts with the likes of Jacqueline Bisset, Miriam Margolyes, James Marsters, Alfred Molina, Roger Rees, Yeardley Smith, Eric Stoltz, and many more. This audio also includes a chilling dramatization of Wilde's sole novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Lady Windermere's Fan: The irreverent satire that launched Wilde's succession of classical comedies. A lord, his wife, her admirer, and an infamous blackmailer converge in this delicious comic feast of scandal. A divinely funny comedy of good girls, bad husbands, and the moral hypocrisy of British high society in the late 19th century. Stars Roger Rees, Eric Stoltz, Miriam Margolyes, Joanna Going, Gina Field, Judy Geeson, Arthur Hanket, Lisa Harrow, Dominic Keating, James Warwick, and Tom Wheatley. Directed by Michael Hackett.
A Woman of No Importance: Devilishly attractive Lord Illingworth is notorious for his skill as a seducer. But he is still invited to all the "best" houses while his female conquests must hide their shame in seclusion. In this devastating comedy, Wilde uses his celebrated wit to expose English society's narrow view of everything from sexual mores to Americans. Stars Rosalind Ayres, Jane Carr, Peter Dennis, Judy Geeson, Paul Gutrecht, Martin Jarvis, Cherie Lunghi, Robert Machray, Miriam Margolyes, Samantha Mathis, and Jim Norton.
An Ideal Husband A tender love story, a glittering setting in London society, and a shower of witticisms are only a few of the reasons this play has enjoyed hugely successful revivals.
    Critic Reviews:
"Fans of Oscar Wilde will delight in this collection of four of the author's best-loved plays and a theatrical adaptation of his only novel. These full-cast productions -
    Lady Windermere's Fan,
    A Woman of No Importance,
    An Ideal Husband,
The Importance of Being Earnest - feature energetic performances from a host of talented actors including Eric Stoltz, Martin Jarvis, Alfred Molina, and Jacqueline Bisset. Razor-sharp comedic timing from all the players will entertain listeners while the production of
A Picture of Dorian Gray offers a darker pleasure and a cast that delivers a taut, suspenseful performance." (
    Publisher's Weekly)
"The smart direction and casting and well-executed musical scores are a boon to the production, which will keep audiences laughing and engaged through multiple listens." (
    Library Journal)

    Good Collection
If you know the plays, this is a decent collection.
While the performance is OK, Audible does have much better available as single plays for most. That said I like the collection in one audio format.
I found 'Dorian Grey' interpreted for stage interesting. The snips of interview and the the Theatre sounds of the audience did evoke the sense of a live production. If you like Theatre, then you will know that not all performances are world class and can be a bit forgiving.
My suggestion is to check through Audible's collection of Oscar Wilde and listen to a few samples before you decide on this.

    i like to use it
Another great Kindle public domain book.....
...and another serialized gem from Jacobs. This one is not a collection of tales, but rather a funny take on the sea-faring life: the philandering captain with a woman in every port. If you have never tried Jacobs before, his work is often hilarious (at least when the tale surrounds the exploits of Ginger Pete, the night watchman and other assorted seafaring types).
This story has quite a few twists and some real chuckles as the captain finds himself having to endure the attention of several females and his first-mates pithy commentary on his actions. Definitely worth a try but by no means is this Jacobs' finest work.....
    Thanks
