In considering the theme of egalitarianism, the volume notes Alexis de Tocqueville's observation in 1831 that equality was more important to Americans than liberty. Also addressed is the Yankee character, which became a staple in American comedy for much of the nineteenth century.

Miller analyzes several English plays and notes how David Garrick's reforms in London were carried over to the colonies. Garrick faced an increasingly middle-class public, offers Miller, and had to make adjustments to plays and to his repertory to draw an audience.

The volume also looks at the shift in drama that paralleled the one in political power from the aristocrats who founded the nation to Jacksonian democrats. Miller traces how the proliferation of newspapers developed a demand for plays that reflected contemporary society and details how playwrights scrambled to put those symbols of the outside world on stage to appeal to the public. Steamships and trains, slavery and adaptations of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and French influences are presented as popular subjects during that time.

Entertaining the Nation effectively outlines the civilizing force of drama in the establishment and development of the nation, ameliorating differences among the various theatergoing classes, and provides a microcosm of the changes on and off the stage in America during these two centuries.

This is a very good book to understand what makes the Korean-Americans "tick". Particularly insightful are the ways in which Christian Kim, the author, captures general patterns for the Korean-Americans and their successes. This is by far the best introductory book on Korean-Americans in the market and will be very useful for use in classroom settings, both on the high school and college levels, in courses dealing with ethnic studies and the Asian experience in American history and society.

Brief is right

This guy conducted absolutely no research and bases his thoughts on things he's noticed. This may be appropriate for a biography, but it certainly is not appropriate for a book describing an ethicity of people. He stereotypes his own people without giving any merit to his thoughts in form of other sources. This book is extremely brief, and you'd be better off learning about Korean Americans from a biography or from a more documented source.

Unsubstantiated...Opinionated...Rubbish

I've been led to believe that American universities make up a large majority of the world's greatest universities in terms of academic quality. So I'm a little puzzled by the large swath of American reviewers of this book who think it is a work of notable acclaim. It is poorly written first, merely a collection of zealotted right wing, unsubstantiated drivel containing such ex cathedra gems as on page 21: "Countries that do not have many evangelical Christians tend to be less aggressive about fighting for the rights of color..." (Flabbergasted doesn't describe the feeling enough).

There is no self critique of the Korean people whatsoever, quite clearly in his eyes they are the pepetual victim who has never once done anything wrong (although plenty of other Korean commentators, like Dr. M.H. Jo, can bring themselves to criticise the community when needs be ie. their negative views of black people).

I also know plenty of Koreans who smoke, drink and would hopefully stick two fingers up at this rubbish.

A fantastic read for a history buff & on my wish list for places to visit!

This author from Watertown, has really done her homework on the History of Sackets Harbor, New York. This is the best researched and most well-written book on the history of a mid Atlantic state that I have had the pleasure to read. It is worthy of textbook material for high school and college students because the history lessons are rich, including highly detailed accounts of the Sackets Harbor regions and shipyards, and its national importance during the War of 1812. Lots of important and notable people are covered within the history accounts of this famous village, founded by Augustus Sackett over 200 years ago. The author brings the history up to date, with descriptions of the area sites, museums and shops that are tourist attractions today. With the beautiful lake views and railroad, I'm ready to take a trip to this historical place myself and I have placed it on my wish list of places to visit. What a great learning tool this book is, that gives new nuggets of info with each re-read of it -- lots of information that can be studied and enjoyed. It's a five-star hit for me!

a great history of my own hometown

Growingnup in Sackets Harbor, I thought I knew mostnof what there was to know about my tiny, tiny hometown. But after reading this book I discovered I barely knew anything of Sacket's rich history. Ms. Monroe does an excellent job of detailing the ships that were built in the tiny harbor to the great amount of skirmishes that happened here during 1812, to the great peoplenwho lived or even passed through the village, and even goes as far as details some of the most impressive buildings in the village. The book is defentially a must read for any local history buffs.

Not Compelling Enough For Me

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, I found it difficult to get in to this book. There's a lot of information about people living a lifestyle that I couldn't relate to.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

There's nothing wrong with it and I'm not sure you could change it either really, it's just not a subject that really appealed to me, it's my own fault for buying the book.

Have you listened to any of T. David Rutherfords other performances? How does this one compare?

No, first time I've ever heard him, he's absolutely fine.

Could you see Island Cup being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Hmmm, you could make a Friday Night Lights style programme out of it, no idea who you'd get to play anyone though.

Any additional comments?

This book would probably be great for people that grew up in the area & have an interest in the rivalry between the two islands.
