    Title: The Imagined Civil War
Subtitle: Popular Literature of the North and South, 1861-1865
    Author: Alice Fahs
    Narrator: Julie Williams
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-23-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
In this groundbreaking work of cultural history, Alice Fahs explores a little-known and fascinating side of the Civil War--the outpouring of popular literature inspired by the conflict. From 1861 to 1865, authors and publishers in both the North and the South produced a remarkable variety of war-related compositions, including poems, songs, children's stories, romances, novels, histories, and even humorous pieces. Fahs mines these rich but long-neglected resources to recover the diversity of the war's political and social meanings.Instead of narrowly portraying the Civil War as a clash between two great, white armies, popular literature offered a wide range of representations of the conflict and helped shape new modes of imagining the relationships of diverse individuals to the nation. Works that explored the war's devastating impact on white women's lives, for example, proclaimed the importance of their experiences on the home front, while popular writings that celebrated black manhood and heroism in the wake of emancipation helped readers begin to envision new roles for blacks in American life.
Recovering a lost world of popular literature, The Imagined Civil War adds immeasurably to our understanding of American life and letters at a pivotal point in our history.

    Lots of interesting material, academic
Popular literary history is not written by, nor is it historically characterized by, the "classics" that come down to us. More often than not, the classics of 19th century American writers (except Mark Twain) were not best-sellers in their time, indeed they were hardly read by the contemporaries of the authors. That is why getting an understanding of what the masses read at the time of the Civil War -- what they read in terms of books and more so in terms of magazines & weekly newspapers -- provides such a great window on how the "average" literate person, north or south, thought on an everyday basis. This book by Alice Fahs tries to do that.
The book has lots of interesting material about the time and popular thought, it will open your eyes. It is, however, a bit dense at times ... especially to someone like me who was neither an English nor a Comparative Literature major. I can read or listen to academic History material with little trouble, but I had trouble with this work. It sounded like a PhD dissertation at times, or a paper for an academic journal, and not like a breezy discussion of the subject matter.
So I give it 5 stars for the unique and revealing content, and just a couple of stars for its academic density. Which averages out at 3 stars. It is certainly not the worst audiobook I've listened to over 5+ years on Audible, but neither was it the best. If you were a lit major or feel you can wade through such material without too much trouble, I say get it.

It's perfect for today's very busy multi-tasking lifestyle
I'm Black American and this book is the truth.I was so relieved to know someone else in the world knew of the economic and social conflict these immigrants were causes, especially Latin immigrants.I am so inspired by this book that I want to write a letter to every politician in America from to Federal, and even to Obama.I'll even pay for their audio book copy, because I know most of them will be too lazy to want to read the book. The audio copy is astounding. It's perfect for today's very busy multi-tasking lifestyle.I'm a believer in that hearing someone read to you helps retain that knowledge better that you reading the book yourself.,depending on the book subject, not technical or math books. Five stars all the way.I'm surprised this book only has 5 reviews;wake up true Americans and read or listen to this book!!! Your future is and will continue to be affected by the subjects in this book....for the worse.
Right on the Nose of Those Overwhelming Masses
For a number of years now the U.S. government has abused the extension of allowing Immigrants to enter the United States. 'Crowded Land of Liberty: Solving America's Immigration Crisis' is an excellent book on this subject. Author Dirk Chase Eldredge does a fine job in examining the way pro-immigration enthusiasts extend new waves to unassimilated aliens streaming into the country. We are reminded of clichés that "this is a land of immigrants" only to a degree. The true origin of the founders of the original 13 Colonies were very much alike coming from Christian Europe, especially from British Isles, France and Germany. The flood of third world immigrants with the help of multinational corporation, arrive with very low economic and educational levels. They keep their native languages and take longer to assimilate into American culture and send back wages to their families residing in their home country.
The book examines how the dimensions of immigration growth and how it has contributed to a very serious major crisis facing the United States. The fact that what passes for American has ceased to be American people. Now, America is a state and government, it being a nation is a thing of the past. Even under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 those who sought reduction of immigration made a compromise with opposing forces in a foolish bargain only to create more illegal "chain" immigration and mass amnesty. To eliminate this problem the U.S. government needs to look into these immigration policies and revise the Immigration Act.

    Blankley a hit with Grit
I guess being an ordinary guy from the south side of Chicago I can't be as insightful or highbrow as a lot of reviewers I see here on Amazon. I will simply say that this book should be read by Americans who want to aggressively shoulder the challenges facing our country.
Now I know that will leave a lot of folks out, especially the ones Blankley mentions in his book who hope to benefit from "the politicians who promise the fruits of other people's labor as inducements for votes." Perhaps some of you are discovering that Obama is not the Golden Messiah promised by the 24/7 media emptyheads. He is - as most of us knew who were onto him here in Chicago - another mediocre pol who will say and do anything to get elected and then hope you will forget his campaign promises while he raises taxes and redistributes your earnings. We aren't called the Windy City for nothing. Mike Royko once called Jesse Jackson the Windy City's Windiest Windbag. I think if he were alive today he would agree that Obama has readily slipped into Jesse's well-worn shoes.
When I opened this book I knew Blankley's call for a draft would hit people right between the eyes. I notice several crybabies already were here whining and running for cover behind their Mommy's couch. Relax, willya? He advocates two years of compulsory service, not necessarily in the armed services, but also in various public service positions. Maybe if you had something better to do with your time 41 of you wouldn't be involved in fatal vehicle crashes every day.
With the Democrats help unions here in Illinois have vigorously opposed mandatory public service. Could this could be adding to our state's $9 BILLION (and climbing) deficit this year? But wait until the public pension crisis hits in the next year or so and unions see their benefits sharply cut. Their Democrat pals will be harder to find than a blonde without a cell phone.
Or even worse, perhaps unions will be given full payments assessed to you, the "rich" taxpayer. Just today, our new Dem governor, Obama's close friend Quinn, defined "middle class" as a family of four making $54,000 a year. With pols this out of touch and our economy shaking like a mag 7 earthquake, something's got to give. At least Blankley offers a concrete road map.
You may not agree with all that Blankley has to say, but you can take this to the bank (before it goes bust) - a HUGE shift is coming, and our lives are about to dramatically change. Do your future self a favor, read this book.
    Good Read
It was written prior to Obama took office and many of it's predictions have come true.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Simon Schama's different kind of history of the USA begins in the middle of an Iowa caucus. There he witnesses first-hand the exciting, chaotic crush as ordinary Americans - grannies, students, businesswomen and doctors - decide who should become the 44th President of the United States.
He meets Muslim Chuck (Khalil) Alaman, the 'Chicken Club' immigrants and even retired generals, with their take on American history, as they all face the future. Schama delves into America's past to reveal a fascinating collection of stories - of heroes and villains - that capture the spirit of a country built on migration and war: Fannie Lou, sharecropper turned civil rights campaigner, General Montgomery Meigs, founder of the first war cemetery at Arlington, and many more. Simon Schama has lived in America half his life. Here, he shows how the echoes of the past live on in the land of freedom and opportunity.

Well researched account of the years between 1940 & 1945. It does not, however, shed any new light on any of the aspects of the
It is a relatively thorough chronological review of the major facts of the brothers' military service. It does not seem to provide any insights on how Joseph Kennedy influenced his sons' naval assignments. I did learn that Joe Jr. was more accomplished in flying the B-24 than I previously perceived. That is a very difficult aircraft to fly and requires a lot of muscle in doing maneuvers. The book overemphasized the fraternal rivalry which is not atypical in large families, especially ones with a completive parent. I wish that there had been more about Joe Jr.'s romantic interest in England and whether his devotion to a married woman was truly serious.
    Great Read
It's a great read bringing to light great insight into the people instead of the customary sterile reports of their daily lives.
How War Shaped One of America's Leading Families
This is a well researched, well written and very interesting and insightful book.
In "The Kennedy's at War" author Edward Renehan Jr. examines the impact of World War II on the family of Joseph Patrick and Rose Kennedy. The book focuses on the elder Kennedy, his sons, Josephy Jr. and John F. Kennedy, and daughter Kathleen Kennedy, although the entire Kennedy clan is covered.
The family sacrificed a great deal during World War II, although the elder Kennedy had done everything in his power to keep America from entering the fighting. Both sons served in the U.S. Navy. Joseph died piloting an aircraft full of explosives late in the war, while John went missing in the Pacific temporarily after his torpedo boat, PT-109, was sliced in half by a Japanese destroyer. And daughter Kathleen's British husband was killed by a German sniper in Normandy shortly after the two married.
It was his experiences in World War II that shaped John F. Kennedy and transformed him into the man that later became President of the United States.
"The Kennedys at War" debunks a number of myths concerning the Kennedy family and offers new insights into one of America's most powerful and interesting families.
    Kennedy wars
Both in peace and in war, the Kennedy family has always been in the "war" with destiny. Life and death are alternated in the history of the Kennedys, who were enrolled when others did everything to avoid conflicts. Excellent book.
The historic decade that shaped them
There are many Kennedy books but this one takes a unique approach. It narrows its focus to four Kennedys -- Papa Joe and his three most promising children, Joe, Jr., Jack and Kick -- and the impact World War II had on them. At the beginning of the book, the millionaire Irish Catholic is off to serve FDR as Ambassador to the Court of St. James. Joe is the chosen one, the one to whom daddy has pinned his hopes.
