    Publisher's Summary:
The stories written in this book are typical of those found throughout history. The explorers of the old world discovered a continent that was new to them, and they jabbed their flag into the ground and claimed that land for their sovereign. There was no regard for the native peoples of that land. At first, welcoming the Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, French, and English onto their shores, the Indians soon discovered that the strangers in their land were not there to live peacefully beside the Indian. The newcomers were interested in taking the riches of their lands back to their home country, taking over the land and dominating and subduing the native people. When war broke out between two white factions, many times the Indians chose the losing side because they were promised the return of their lands if they won. When the wars were over, the white losers were banished back to where they came from while the Indian was more feared and hated than ever before.

    Publisher's Summary:
What lights the spark that ignites a revolution?
Lost in the story of Americas path to independence is the tumultuous nature of that nations origins: the interplay of ideologies and personalities that provoked a group of merchants, farmers, artisans and sailors to take up arms in pursuit of liberty....
A city of 15,000 inhabitants packed onto a land-connected island a little over one square mile, Boston in 1775 was also - following a series of incendiary incidents by patriotic citizens and trouble-seeking vigilantes - a city occupied by the British.
In the year following the infamous Tea Party an uneasy peace had reigned, but on 19 April 1775 violence erupted, with skirmishes at Lexington and Concord. Two months later, with the city cut off by British forces, these clashes reached a bloody climax in an encounter that would mark the point of no return for the rebellious colonists: the Battle of Bunker Hill.
With a keen sense of the unexplored side of mythic events, Nathaniel Philbrick shines fresh light on this momentous story, revealing new key players and finding unknown sides to familiar ones. The real work of choreographing the rebellion fell to physician Joseph Warren (fated to die at Bunker Hill) while others include Warrens fiancee - the poet Mercy Scollay; Paul Revere; and a notable new recruit to the revolutionary cause, an elegant Virginian called George Washington. On the British side, reluctant combatant General Thomas Gage was succeeded by the bellicose William Howe, who would lead three charges at Bunker Hill and preside over the claustrophobic cauldron of a city under siege.
Written with passion, insight, even-handedness and the eloquence of a born storyteller, Bunker Hill brings to life the robust, chaotic and blisteringly real origins of America.

    Details Few Know About
This book was sitting on my desk for a couple of months unread as I bought it with the intent of a quick read to buttress my "large" knowledge base on the topic so I was in no rush. I was also not a fan of Philbrick's Mayflower.
The book starts a little slow but in retrospect, plants the seeds for the all important understanding of the battles that led to the formation of a cohesive cause for independence. In fact, I went back and reread the first 20% of the book after finishing the book, getting so much more out of it than initially and actually having much more interest in the first 20% the second time around.
This book is the most in depth and unique book of all the books I have read on the topic. I enjoyed it more and found it much more informative as well as more entertaining and informative than Fischer's Revere.
Philbrick lays the foundation of the mindset of the colonists, the serendipitous grouping of events that led to the escalation that truly gets you not just into the battles, but into the minds and hearts of the leaders, followers and townspeople. Many facts were revealed to me I had never known. This was not a cursory look at an "important time in nascent America" but an in depth look at leaders few know about often from a fragmented group that many were worried could lead to a military dictatorship during the fight to rid the colonists of the oppression of the British.

    Publisher's Summary:
Not many have experienced as much of Texas history firsthand as John James Dix. At the age of seven, he came to Texas with his family, arriving in Stephen F. Austin's colony, and listened to the stories of his father, who fought in the early battles of the Texas Revolution under heroes of the Republic - Austin and Travis. He drove steers, worked under General Zachary Taylor in the Mexican-American War, and, after he married, was a neighbor to Richard King on the Santa Gertrudis Ranch. He became a Texas Ranger and rode with John Salmon Old Rip Ford. These were only a few of Dix's many adventures, and in this detailed biography, Dan R. Manning brings to light the great history of a man who was part of that legendary foundation that became the Lone Star State.

    Title: Yanks and Limeys
Subtitle: Alliance Warfare in the Second World War
    Author: Niall Barr
    Narrator: Philip Franks
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-06-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
In the mid-20th century, the relationship between America and Britain had a chequered past. Theirs was a history of protection and oppression, of rebellion and ultimately war. But then the shared crisis of the Second World War brought Britain and America closer than ever before or since and saw an unprecedented level of military cooperation. How was such a radical shift possible?
To uncover how this historically fraught relationship recovered from its inauspicious start, Niall Barr goes back to the origins of their shared military history in the American War of Independence and shows how these early days had ramifications for the later crucial alliance.
Picking up the tale with Americas entry into the Second World War, Niall Barr tells the story of these two armies as they fought in the largest war in history, from the uppermost echelons of the relationship between Churchill and Roosevelt right down to battlefield level and the soldiers fighting side by side for a common cause.
Dr Niall Barr is a senior lecturer in defence studies, King's College London, based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham. Educated at the University of St Andrews, he previously taught military history at Sandhurst. He has published widely on British military history and has conducted numerous battlefield tours, including three to El Alamein. He is married with two children and lives in Oxfordshire.

A Balanced View! Who woulda thunk it?
Anyone who has read histories or biographies of WWII, is aware of the US/UK alliance in the war has some knowledg of the allianceand its problems and successes. The author traces the relationship from the French and Indianwar, through the 19th century and WWI to the various aspects in WWII.
Having read many US and Brit books, served in the US Army ad met several Brit officers, I was happily surprised at the impartial presentation in the book. It did not completely change my opinions, but gave me several insights as to, specifically, the attitudes of the British High Command and the reasons behind them. I highly recommend this book to anyone as a one voume study on a contentious subject.

  • Conserving Mount Nittany Audiobook by Tom Shakely

    Title: Conserving Mount Nittany
    Subtitle: A Dynamic Environmentalism
    Author: Tom Shakely
    Narrator: Tom Shakely, Ben Novak
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-14-15
Publisher: The Nittany Valley Society, Inc.
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
In presenting the first complete history of Central Pennsylvania's most famous mountain, Tom Shakely pieces together the story of Mount Nittany as perhaps the most famous symbol of The Pennsylvania State University and the Nittany Valley.
Conserving Mount Nittany tells the story of the physical and cultural environment from which a spirit of both affection and protection for the Mountain has been evident from the time of the American Indians into the present. In his explication of "dynamic environmentalism" the author presents conservation in a fresh yet historically-informed context as a community's expression of itself through time.
Assembled through conversational and historical record, this history of Mount Nittany is as accessible as it is provocative, particularly in outlining the conservation efforts of the 20th century from the early actions of an elite few to a democratic effort supported by the people of the valley.
A book packed with anecdotes, observations, and reflections, Conserving Mount Nittany delights as a conversation on how to cultivate a spirit of magic in the midst of a practical age.
    Critic Reviews:
"A meta story of pride, determination, and action born of love...to preserve the largest natural physical symbol of our alma mater." (Roger L. Williams, Executive Director, Penn State Alumni Association)
"If the passion of Princess Nittany beats within you, this book will immerse you in the history of how it got there. An encompassing work from someone who clearly bleeds not only the blue and white of Penn State, but the brown and green of a vibrant Mount Nittany." (John Hook, President, The Mount Nittany Conservancy)
    Members Reviews:
An addition to the PSU canon
What makes authors like Tom Shakely so valuable is their ability to stand on the shoulders of giants - whether Shoemaker or Riley or Novak, the sources he taps end up artfully intertwined in the final compilation. The result is a full spectrum study of the subject, in this case Mount Nittany, an object of mythic meaning to the Penn State community. Though I had prior familiarity with the story, that of the not-any mountain, I had never been exposed to it in such a comprehensive and engaging manner. The combination of oral history, exposition, and snippets of prior coverage made for a broad and compelling look at the spirit of dynamic environmentalism which saved Mount Nittany (and failed to do similarly with Hort Woods). This ethic, very much rooted in the 'place' itself, is perhaps the greatest legacy of those conservationists and community leaders who had the foresight to protect Mount Nittany. Shakely's efforts at explaining this ethic is motivated by the same devotion, and the book which resulted deserves to be applauded and, more importantly, read by the Penn State community.
Conserving Mount Nittany: An important resource for those who want to learn about Penn State's oldest symbol
Far too often, we take the things around us for granted, especially the things that have always been there. The generations of students who come to consider State College and the Nittany Valley their home have never known a skyline without the comforting and distinct slope of Mount Nittany.

Title: Legendary Explorers: The Life and Legacy of Captain John Smith
    Author: Charles River Editors

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-09-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
"Here every man may be master and owner of his owne labour and land.... If he have nothing but his hands, he may...by industrie quickly grow rich." (Captain John Smith)
John Smith is one of the most common names in the English language and akin to the use of John Doe, but every Briton and American is familiar with the explorer and mercenary Captain John Smith, who helped found the first permanent British colony in the New World, at Jamestown, in 1607. From there, he went on to become the first Englishman to explore New England, and it was Smith who named the Chesapeake Bay. He wrote several accounts of his exploration and his time spent in the New World, becoming one of the first and most invaluable primary sources on European settlement in North America.
In America, John Smith is better known for his association with Pocahontas, a Native American princess. She was the daughter of the paramount chief (mamanatowick) Powhatan, leader of an Algonquian-speaking native group in eastern Virginia. It was this group that Smith and the other English settlers came into contact with, and Smith credited her with saving him from being killed by the Native Americans. After that, Smith was able to establish relatively friendly relations and trade with the local inhabitants, ensuring Jamestown's survival. Subsequent retellings of the story have often fictitiously cast Smith and Pocahontas as lovers, and even husband and wife, portraying both characters in a more romantic - and positive - light.
Smith's central role in the establishment of the British colonies has helped obscure the more controversial elements of his story, including his time as a mercenary in Turkey. Naturally, the conflicts between English settlers and the Native Americans are also glossed over.

Abner Doubleday (1819 - 1893) had one of the lengthiest Civil War resumes and an influence that made him worthy of national recognition. Doubleday is credited with firing the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening fight of the war, and he played a pivotal role on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, taking command of the I Corps early on the morning of July 1, 1863 after General John Reynolds was killed. Doubleday also led a division at South Mountain and then at Antietam, where he was injured during deadly fighting in the Cornfield and the West Woods. One colonel described him as a "gallant officer ... remarkably cool and at the very front of battle", and his personal character was so admired among the rank-and-file that one of his men humorously asserted, "He is deficient considerably in the requisites of a commander. He does not drink whiskey..."

    Publisher's Summary:
For more than half a century, generations of hockey fans in northeast Iowa have given their allegiance to the Waterloo Black Hawks. Few realize that decades before the Black Hawks arrived, a long forgotten club captivated Waterloo during the late 1920s, playing in front of crowds even larger than those who come to the rink today, and beating teams from Chicago, the Twin Cities, and Canada. Sponsored and administered by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post, a contemporary newspaper report noted, "Hockey's popularity eclipses any other winter sport; the game took such a foothold that the city would be lost without its regular hockey matches now."
The Legion Team: Forgotten Hockey in Waterloo, 1927-1930, seeks to revive the memories of this overlooked era, detailing every game the Becker-Chapman squad played during four winters. However, beyond the wins, losses, and game details; the athletes who came to the Cedar Valley for the opportunity to play, their opponents, and Waterloo of that era, come to life.
