This is America

I am a child of immigrants from Colombia, South America and was born in the US and grew up in the South. Even though I am a full fledge American, part of my identity comes from my Colombian roots.

In her book, The Republic of Imagination: America in Three Books, Azar Nafisi shares her journey to America and how it became her adopted home. She is proud to be an American but yet still connects to her Iranian roots.

This beautifully written story uses the lens of American fiction to gage the American odyssey.

Nafisi admits her idea for this book came about after an encounter with a fellow Iranian immigrant who states that American attitude toward literature was indifferent because they did not understand oppression. He told the author, âThese people are different from us- they are from another world. They donât care about books and such things.â

Her analysis of the current state of affairs is free flowing, but in the end she realizes that the future is not as bleak. She discovers that the secret world of imagination is one that is open to all and often discovered by a few. This book is a wakeup call to encourage the next generation of writers and thinkers. Ideas are fuel for a rich and cultured society. But the themes of immigrants, guilt, and standardization of learning mixed with personal reflection makes for a harmony of experiences captured in this book.

I believe that the literate elite has always been a minority but they will always continue to exist. The real challenge is to create windows of imagination. Nafisi has create a portal where readers can choose this whimsical path.

I eagerly bought this book because I loved Reading Lolita in Tehran so much

I eagerly bought this book because I loved Reading Lolita in Tehran so much. Let me be clear. This is NOT that book. And it shouldn't be, as I suppose Tehran is a tough one to follow. However, I became totally engrossed in the first part of the book, the part about Huck Finn. I found the sections on Sinclair Lewis and Carson McCullers to be forced and contrived. McCullers is actually one of my favorite authors, and I love The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. But, while reading Republic, I kept feeling like Nafisi was grasping to draw conclusions between that novel and the theme of her book.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The fact that this is a true story, as told by his sister, means that there is a level of honesty and detail that you would not normally get. It's not just an account of what happened to Matty, it's about the devastating impact his accident had on his family.

Was The Last Act of Love worth the listening time?

I think so. It's a hard listen, not a book I am likely to listen to again, I was glad when it came to an end.

I can't say that I enjoyed this book, I don't think it's that kind of story. It's heartfelt and sincere yet harrowing and painful. It's well written and describes their journey in detail

Loved this book and as a volunteer in a hospice this book gave me great insights into the grieving process. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I was deeply moved by this book and Cathy did a wonderful job in writing it.

Cathy Rentzenbrink has beautifully told her sad tale with humour punctuating it and a warmth that shines through continually making hers a moving, honest, account of personal trauma. Perfectly done.

A powerful tale

This short story stands tall and strikes deep into the heart. For anyone who doesnât know much about adoption or what itâs like to be adopted, it gives quite a learning experience as to the internal turmoil felt by those who cannot help but yearn to solve the mystery of who they are and where they came from. The author writes beautifully to show thisâshe made me feel her hope and excitement and the pain of disappointments, perfectly juxtaposed with her odd job of taking care of research lab mice. Those who are squeamish about mice or who insist on tidy, happy endings may not like this story. Those who appreciate the particular skill required of writing short will love this stunning little gem. It took my breath away and gave me an opportunity to learn more about the perspective of adoptees.

Beautiful and Carefully Observed

The genetics research mouse room setting is the perfect contrast to the interior moment described in Susan Ito's lean tale of her first meetings with the birthmother who'd given her up for adoption 20 years ago. Ito describes the difficult, weighty, and heartbreaking relationship with her birthmother in clean, smart prose. And while it is easy to sympathize with the author, she doesn't let herself, or us, forget the big picture, the devastating political background that looms behind the sadness of her relinquishment -- World War II, the aftermath of the internment of the Japanese Americans and the racist climate are essentially to blame.

this is such a amazing and inspirational and yet eye opening book.

Archie went through so much to get to where he is today you feel for him. He had dyslexia but in his time when he was young not much was known about this disorder so even though he was smart and wanted to learn he was hindered and made to feel like he was not a good student.

The teachers who were nice to him he worked hard for. He was smart and athletic and this is his story of how he got through school and how he came about to learn to read and become a advocate for the New Readers.

We learn about how Archie was made to feel and how he overcame it. How he was in relationships and how he found love. How his wife, an amazing woman, helped him and encouraged and supported him as he went on the journey to find out he had dyslexia, learned to read and became a advocate. His daughter was incredible as well.

Archie is a inspiration and his story will touch your heart as you read his early formative years and how difficult they were in terms of education, how he overcame what was stumbling him, his determination to become something and his passion to have others see everyone learns differently and some have difficulties and how those difficulties do not make them less but are just a challenge. He helps to change how areas in medicine put things out for those who are reading challenged and he is an advocate for educating the public and helping those like him learn to read.

a truly beautiful and inspirational story and I feel lucky to have gotten to read about Archie and his challenges and how he overcame them.

True Love & Character

Would you listen to A Life Worth Living again? Why?

Yes, it's an uplifting real story, the autobiography of a man who loved his wife, family, community, church, and God. Also, it's better than most stories on the screen today ... !

Who was your favorite character and why?

Marvin Harvey was my favorite character, obviously, since it's his story. I loved how Marvin became a productive adult and escaped poverty to help others.

Have you listened to any of Richard J. Bennetts other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to all of them, since I AM him ! I have a hard time comparing stories, though, since I love them all equally.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

How to succeed in life without becoming a millionaire ... but instead being known for your faithfulness, honesty, integrity, love, determination ... something everyone can afford!

Any additional comments?

Yes ... this is a good story to listen to when you're traveling or alone in a hotel room. Instead of turning on that television, listen to this story instead, you'll benefit from this true story, but won't get much out of that box (or flat screen).
