Disappointing

I am a big fan of Annie Sanders and have read or listened to almost all of their books. I was disapppointed with this story (although the narrator was great) as it dealt with heavier material and seemed more somber. If you're looking for something more light-hearted, check out their books The X-Mas Factor and Busy Woman Seeks Wife (both on audible).

Excellent!

I loved the narrator. I loved the story. I matched me at place in my life where I felt I might need to go off exploring. I kind of did for a bit, without anyone really knowing about it, and realized I didn't actually want what I set out thinking I did, much like the main character, but I did learn-and am still learning-a great deal about myself and what I want my life to look like.

This is about the 5th Annie Sanders book I've read. The plot - as with all her books - is great - got me interested right from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I love her style of alternating points of view each chapter! There are parallel stories of Sarah, David, and Claire, all interwoven together. Sarah and David are 40 ish and Claire is 19 ish. If you've ever daydreamed about giving up the responsible day to day existence of work, dinner, chores, predictable social life, to pursue your dreams and passions, this book will walk you down one outcome of that path. Loved it! PS - I almost didn't read this because another reviewer described it as depressing, but I didn't find any of it depressing - the challenges and relationship struggles are the drama that make it so intense.

quiet satire

As a mystery, this may not be the most exciting book or the most exciting narration. But this is more like a gentle satire of English class in the countryside (more like Barbara Pym than Agatha Christie). At first I thought the narrator was a little ponderous, but as I readjusted my expectations to the kind of book this is, I really enjoyed his deadpan humor.

Great set-up and ending!

I use audiobooks to lull myself to sleep, so this was great for me! That fact probably isn't a high recommendation to those who want excitement in a book, however.

After many great nights of sleep, I reached the ending and thought it was very sly. I actually listened to the beginning again, just because the murder itself was so unexpected......and slept really well again!

Why didn't they bother to edit it?

Would you try another book from Michael Innes and/or Gordon Dulieu?

How did the narrator detract from the book?

the narrator was not able to convey different voices well. For example, in a conversation between Appleby and his wife Judith, it was not possible to tell from the voice which character was speaking! There were also mistakes in the reading which were not edited out. I would guess ALL narrators make the occasional flub, and this one just corrected himself and went right on, probably expecting that someone would snip out the bad bit. But they never did.

Once upon a time I was a huge Agatha Christie fan. I haven't read her books in years. Now I opt for Michael Connelly, Jeffrey Deaver, Henning Mankell, Laura Lippman, Steig Larsson, etc. I got this to tide me over before my next month's credits kicked in. First, it moves very slowly. No, not just the pace of the story, the narrator has long pauses. Second, because of this very old British language, it almost requires a dictionary to determine some of the words. This is the only audiobook in 5 years I have decided to not finish. It is so slow and so thick with this old vernacular, I can't get through it and enjoy the listen. Listen to the sample to see if it is your type of book or not.

A pleasant surprise

I bought the book based on a recommendation from a friend, expecting nothing other than a pleasant few hours.

After the first half hour, though, I was completely hooked.

This book isn't about religion, per se, there's no hidden Christian message, or a message from any other religion, either.

Instead, this is a story of a selfish, greedy woman who, in the moment before she thinks she will die, promises to live a better life, to "do good", and is delivered from what would have ended as a fatal automobile accident.

The ensuing story tells how she works to transform herself, in a way that comes across as plausible and possible here in the real world.

One caveat - I expected chick-lit from this title, and I think that's how it's classed on Audible, but it's not really chick-lit; it's a little more thought-provoking than the regular, garden-variety read-for-fun fiction.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!

I had never read any of Pamela Morsi's books before and tried Bikini Car Wash. I really enjoyed it so I looked for more of her books, I got The Social Climber of Davenport Heights. At first I was skeptical, the narrator sounded so snooty and the character was so shallow, but that's the whole idea of this story! I really enjoyed it and had to listen to the end this morning before I could start my day. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys chic lit or contemporary romance. Very entertaining.

I bought this on a whim after reading Mobilis's review and prepared myself for disappointment. When I heard the Harlequin intro I nearly choked. Why hadn't I listened to my instincts? I mean, look at the cover--this is going to be awful!! But from the first chapter I was hooked. This is an amazingly good time without a hint of chick lit about it. Its a feel-good tale that is well narrated and well written and most of all had me dying to get back to it. It made me laugh and at one point it even made me cry. Get this if you have a spare credit, you wont regret it.

This was the best book for content I have heard in awhile! I purchased due to reader I.G. a.k.a. Garba Zackman. I have all of this readers books and 100 of G.Z. reads. Her males voices are my fave.

For baseball fans...

Molly's favorite memory of her dad is playing catch in the backyard. He taught her to pitch and she even mastered the knuckleball pitch. One night about 6 months after he died she decides that playing softball is not good enough. She wants to play baseball and tries out for the boy's baseball team. Her best friend supports her decision and Lonnie, one of the catcher's becomes her catcher learning how to deal with the knuckleball. The only thing that worries Molly besides being accepted onto the team is telling her mom. This book is recommended for baseball fans.

Great book

My son had to read this for a book contest. He liked it. My 10-yr-old daughter loved it. Lots of teaching points on gender issues and bullies and not fitting in. The main character, Molly, triumphs over it all and makes a lot of friends along the way.

I love softball...and this was a book to my interest because it was about a girl playing baseball. I loved the book so much. I liked the moral of the story and all kids who have had something terrible happen to them or their family, NEVER GIVE UP!!!!!

This is more like it!

If you happened to read my review of book 1, Leah's Choice, you would know how unlike the author that book read and how disappointed I was in it. But still recommend you read before reading Rachel's Garden.

This book, Rachel's Garden is a great story by Marta Perry. Rachel is a strong, intelligent woman who must come to grips with the death of her husband and dealing with family and friends who think they 'know' what she should be doing and what is best for her and her children. There is also a slight 'mystery' involved that is so typical of Marta Perry's books. Even though there is sadness, personal turmoil and clashing of wills, this is a story of love, forgiveness and ultimatly great joy.

I hope Anna's Return is just as good. I can't wait to start reading it. If you like Amish Romance and have read other books by Marta Perry, I am sure you will like Rachel's Garden. It is one of those stories you can just relax and enjoy!

"Komm Schnell" (Come Quick) This is a great book.

I finished the first in the series, Leah's Choice, and immediately started on Rachel's Garden and finished it in two days. They are beautiful stories that give you alot to think about. I can hardly wait until June 2010 to start the third book, Anna's Return. If it is half as good as the previous two then I will be happy.

I love Amish fiction. I am new to Marta Perry's books. She is fabulous. I have read the Pleasant Valley series. What I really like is the fact that you can just randomly read any of them and won't feel lost. The characters in the other books in the series make an appearance, but you won't feel lost. Love Marta Perry!

All About Fiction

Most reviewers discuss the science of this novel. But, for me, it's all about the fiction. The magic of fiction, resulting from our willing suspension of disbelief, is that we read (or listen to) a novel as if it were a book of non-fiction about actual people confronting real events. But what if the narrator of a novel claims to be its author and comments, from time to time, on the process of his creation of the very fictional characters and plot? And what if that plot forces its characters, most of them student-writers of non-fiction that they sometimes make up, to wonder if they or their DNA or science or the media have created them? (It never occurs to them that they are characters in a novel.) Then we have a maze of a book--another amazing Richard Powers novel both intellectually provocative and aesthetically satisfying. What Powers also does so marvelously well here is to invent Thassadit Amzwar (nickname: Generosity) who makes us feel so good, we need her to be real. But whether she is or not, there is more truth in this Richard Powers novel than in a month of cable news.

if you liked this one ....

you should try "echomaker" by the same author. shame that they don't offer it here...it's his best work if you ask me. but of course generosity is very good, too.

I finely found a fiction writer I love!

The way he writes is magical, like our thoughts at their wittiest. It is real authentic contemporary writing, with tangible characters that touch you.

I am so thrilled I found Richard and this book, I now have a modern, well-rounded, interesting writer that I can call my favorite.

Neuroscience

Richard Power's strength is in his ability to inform readers about subjects from genetics, to relationships, to education. In this volume he approaches neuroscience. In particular, he tells the story of one Thassadit Amzwar who is possessed by such happiness that it attracts attention from Russell Stone her creative writing instructor. This is another of his idea-driven novels and it readily informs and invigorates. My problem (with each of his good books) is that the characters really never come to life.

Typical mindless reading that is wanted once in a while.

More suited for teenagers. The story is cute enough, but tedious in its repetition of thoughts and comments regarding the main character. It is sort of mind numbing at times. However, Joan Collins is not for serious reading, neither is the command of the English language an educated one. I knew this already before picking this book to read and did so because I needed something simple to read without giving much thought. It is a trashy read, but that's why we at times love to read Joan or Jacki Collins' books.

Very Entertaining

I love reading the Jackie Collins novels, so when I learned that Joan Collins is also an author, I decided to read one of her novels. I first read Star Quality and I was hooked. I then read Misfortunes Daughters and I truly enjoyed it. Now I just finished Infamous and although it was not as great as the first two books I read, it was a good read. The story focuses on a woman's struggle to adapt herself to a life without her husband and the trials she faces not only for herself, but also her teenage daughter (who seems to get into trouble as teens often do in life). The story was heartfelt and emotional. I would recommend it and I also look forward to reading more Joan Collins novels in the future.

I like Joan Collins' books, and this was a beaut! The book starts out as a romance novel, but turns into a real psychological drama. I found that once into the second half, I couldn't put it down. You'll be missing a great ride if you don't try this one.
