    Beautiful, Gritty, Thought Provoking
This book moves a person outside of their comfort zone and into a world in which they may have to realize that in their everyday life they may have been one of the villians in a parallel to this story. The book is beautiful in the detail it captures, in the people and scene it creates, in the emotion it evokes. I am still a bit haunted by this book, and for a piece of fiction to challenge how I see the world is very uncommon. This book does that. I found the style of the book interesting and the ability of the book to design the players from the fabric of reality accurate and disturbing. I would recommend that you read this book, it is an excellent piece of literature that opens a door to a world most of us will not venture into and yet we will see vignetts of our own world from time to time as events collide. Maybe, after you read this book you will, like myself question from time to time how you respond to what you are told.
    The Unknown Terrorist
I haven't read anything else by this author but was completely engaged and felt a wrench when I finished listening. The story is set in Sydney, Australia and has the seeming straight forward frank approach that often is used to characterise Australians. However, as the story unfolded around the main character, a pole dancer, I empathised with her completely as her view of the world changed. The story is beautifully read by an Australian. Highly recommended.
Well read but falls between two stools
I haven't read any Richard Flanagan before so cannot compare his writing style in The Unknown Terrorist to other works. I suspect others would be more my cup of tea though.
The Unknown Terrorist is a fairly standard thriller which employs the mass media and an unscrupulous journalist as its evil. Our supposed heroine, Gina, also named throughout as The Doll, is hounded to madness over the period of just a few days by drummed up hysteria and the cynical machinations of anonymous powerful men in suits.
I was interested in the descriptions of Sydney, having never been to Australia. However, Flanagan's vision of the city is hardly tourist friendly! I liked his frequent mentions of the various immigrant populations, showing a country made up of many layers of cultures, much like Britain, and the way this was set against rampant hostility towards Muslims was also sadly familiar as this attitude is also widespread over here. The main characters never leapt from the page for me though which made it difficult for me to really invest in their story.
I'm not sure this book had decided what it wanted to be. It doesn't have the pace-at-all-costs approach of slick American thrillers, but the occasions where it tries for literary fiction fail too because of their isolation.

What confronts them now threatens to uproot a lifetime of deeply buried secrets: the impending marriage of Rose's capable and caring son to Rachel's emotionally troubled daughter. Once again, the two women and their families are pitted against each other...just as Rachel learns that her mother, Sylvie, is dying.
Only Rose knows that Sylvie is in reality her mother - and yearns to be recognized as Sylvie's own before it is too late. Sylvie must choose between the intricate web of lies behind which she shields her loved ones...and a truth that will shatter the lives of both her daughters - as well as that of her fragile granddaughter - before it can begin to heal them.
    Members Reviews:
not quite as gripping as the first, but still a worthy follow-up to my favorite novel
I knew there was no way a sequel could enamor me as wholly as the original book, Garden of Lies, but I was willing to give Thorns of Truth a chance. I wasn't disappointed. Rachel and Rose are still the same characters they were in the first book, but older and more concentrated versions of themselves. Rachel is still stubborn, single-minded, hard-working and infuriatingly selfish. Rose is still heartbroken, sharp, self-pitying and a little too good at wearing her heart on her sleeve. They are equally well-rounded characters with realistic flaws and strengths, but I've always been partial to Rose.
There's too much going on for me to summarize, but I'll do my best: Rachel and Rose have two grown children who are now dating each other. Rachel's adopted daughter is unbalanced and suicidal, while Rose's son is overly caring and afraid to leave the relationship. Rachel and Brian are still married, but unhappily. Rose and Max were married for 20-something years before he passed away of an unexpected heart attack. Rose's biological and Rachel's "adopted" mother, Sylvie, struggles with whether or not she should tell the truth about her connection to Rose and how she came to end up with Rachel as her daughter. The story centers around Sylvie's inner conflict, the drama between Rose and Rachel's kids and how it affects the families, Rose navigating her first relationship with a new man after Max's death, and Rachel trying to figure out what went wrong in her marriage to Brian.
This book is a fitting continuation of the story involving the characters we grew to love in the first book. I was very satisfied with the ending and wouldn't mind reading a third novel in the series.
Felt like I was part of the story
I loved it, loved it & loved it even more! I first read the Diary, which MADE me need to read Garden of Lies (5++++) and I was NOT disappointed in anyway with Thorns of Truth. The plot & characters are a part of you when reading. I HATED FOR THIS TO END... now what????
SEQUEL IS HELPFUL AFTER READING THE FIRST GARDEN OF LIES READ IN THAT ORDER
THIS SEQUEL TIED UP ALL LOOSE ENDS. I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH A GOOD READ
    I liked it
My growing up family had 4 kids. 3 boys and me. My husband and I had 5 kids. Now I have 13 grands and 5 greats. Therefore I am used to complicated family dynamics. I loved the way Eileen built on a very complicated start and over 2 books showed how the complications worked out.

    Good fictional literature.
This is the first book I read from this author and I am really pleased with her writing style. It is exact, subtle and very exquisite at the same time. I am always pleased with books that have a broad range of vocabulary but yet a unique simplicity that's makes the book an easy read. The book was interesting as I did not know what to expect from the title El amor es una droga dura. The protagonist Javier is fixated with Nora a young model who men love to love (or at least they think do). They meet via a photo shoot that she arranged with him and henceforth his obsession with her becomes an addiction. His goal is just to have her for one night but Nora proves to be hard to get and refuses to tie herself down to any man. The irony in the story that is revealed only at the end is that Javier has an addiction because he does drink, he did use drugs and overall had health problems (which we do learn about in the beginning) so his "addiction" to Nora could have stemmed from his other addictions. The author presents an interesting concept about the interconnection among the addictions that makes the title of the book so appropriate. It was a good read, interesting fictional literature by a good writer. I will pursue other works by Cristina Peri Rossi.

But rather than reporting the crime to the police, she decides to stay dead and instead of getting mad, get even.
Filled with a host of endearingly offbeat characters, and a narrative that is hilarious, romantic, and thought-provoking by turns, Skinny Dip takes us on a journey through the warped politics of southern Florida, and through the madness created by the human heart.

    One of the American Greats
I am not one much for American authors, but Carl Hiaasen is a great writer. Combined with a fantastic narration this audiobook is well worth the effort to listening too. After listening to this audiobook my wife has been fired to read other books by the author as well as pressuring me to get another Hiaasen audiobook.
    Fun but too long
This book was entertaining but just a bit too long. An abridged version would have been more enjoyable.
    Humor Sunk In Everglades
I was disappointed with this book which contained abundant crude language, minimal but equally crude humor, poor character development and no suspense. Add to that the narrator's painful attempt at female voices and you have a wasted book credit to avoid.
    Acerbic wit and social critique
This was my first foray into Hiaasen territory, and I loved it, particularly in Jeff Harding's rendition. His female voices are very good for someone with such a gravelly voice.
The story starts as a failed wife murder that comes back to bite the husband who fancied that throwing his wife overboard on a cruise would solve the problem of his irritation with her and rejuvenate his bank account. The wife survives, teams up with a better man and finds out a thing or two about that husband of hers that makes him look more than just homicidal: phoney degrees, environmental pollution, fraud, and serial adultery - oh, and he's stupid as well, a fact previously glossed over by his remarkable sexual prowess. Plenty of motives for revenge, and so the game begins...
Hiaasen delights the reader with plot twists, ironic comments on Florida's social mores and protagonists who are intelligent, articulate but lovably flawed. The prose has plenty to recommend it too, not least the quasi-hardboiled wit and the wisecracks. The genre is crime fiction but the characterisations are solid and have psychological depth. This would be fabulous as a holiday read (unless you go to Florida, of course) or on a long, cold journey. Or if you're just hacked off with the rich-and-irresponsible getting richer-and away with everything. Here they don't. They get their heads blown off or at least their arses kicked.
    Its just brilliant!
What did you like most about Skinny Dip?
It fun and more fun, laugh out loud
What did you like best about this story?
The way the book tells a story about how greed and consumerism is bad for us
What does Jeff Harding bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
His ability to act out each character is amazing

    Fantastico
Excellent story line. This narrative is more than a recount of the life of a Afro Puerto Rican woman surviving maneuvering through poverty, racism and the patriarchal powers that rule Puerto Rican society. It looks deeply into these acute and transparent social injustices and its impact on all the characters of the stories. I particular like the way the non linear time line that exalts the story. I saw everyone of my Puerto Rican mothers and fathers through each of the characters. I will be reading more of Maryra Santos-Febres' work.

    Different and scary
I really liked this story, it had a lot of elements and a fairly original story. Definitely worth it.
    I LOVED it!
This book is one of my favorites....it was extremely interesting. The narrator was excellent and really caught my attention. Probably will listen to this one again and again.
    Ugh!!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I loooove Brandon Massey but there's something about this book that I just couldn't get into it.
    One Word Ruined This Book
Would you try another book from Brandon Massey and/or Kevin Free?
No. His use of the "N" word is very offensive to me, and if Mr. Massey used it in this book, I'm sure that he has used it in others. It doesn't matter that Mr. Massey is black. The use of the word is offensive to me, regardless of who uses it.
What could Brandon Massey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I couldn't get past Chapter 2, so I really can't say about the rest of the book. I only got as far as the second chapter, so if Mr. Massey had omitted that one word, the first two chapters would have been more enjoyable.
How could the performance have been better?
    The performance was fine.
What character would you cut from Thunderland?
    Characters were not the problem.
    Any additional comments?
It would be very helpful if customers could be informed if a book contains the "N" word prior to making a purchase. I really would like to be refunded for this purchase.

Novelist Wolfe Boone can't seem to find the right niche for his post-horror writing efforts, and his new bride, Ainsley, known for executing complicated events with panache and perfection, is bewildered by her inability to control something as seemingly simple as scheduling a pregnancy.
But, frustration turns to envy when Ainsley's wacky friend, Melb, discovers, to her utter horror, that she and her husband are expecting a baby.
    Members Reviews:
    Almost a Boo Hiss
In desperate need of a proofreader for starters. Too many characters being referred to in different ways, so that it was difficult to figure out who was who for a good part of the book.
Fairly interesting storyline, but not always realistic behavior. Snake was an interesting addition.
Fairly predictable conclusion except for final scene of play.
    Love This Series!
The book has characters who are funny, human, and colorful! When I read this book I feel like I am witnessing the events in person...Although you can follow the book without reading the other two in the series, I would recommend reading them, because then you can enjoy the characters and situations much better. Rene Gutteridge is now one of my favorite authors!
    I love this series
Lots of laughs! I love this series! # 3 is the best!!!
    Boo Hiss is so funny!
This author has spoiled me! I can't read anybody else. This book is sweet, funny, encouraging just like all her other books.
Hmm... a snake and the end of Skary... BOO HISS sums it up pretty well!
OK OK! I admit, I did enjoy this final installment of what started out as simply, "BOO". I just hate to see something so good like this end so quickly. Being a fan of this, I really had a problem with seeing so little of my favorite character... Thief! In the first 2 books, Thief always cracked me up. I saw more of Goose and Bunny than I did of my favorite cat. Hey, I'm sorry, but he absolutely made me HOWL, and my name really IS Wolfe, so that's saying something, amen?! In this one, you get a glimpse of him, and then his name comes up once or twice. Oh well. This was STILL worth the time well spent.
So what's going on in Skary this time? New lady, with possible new plans for the church? Melb gets pregnant and Ainsley doesn't. And on top of that, there is a 2 headed snake on the loose, and a 19 year old boy wants him back. And what's up with the Sheriff? The sucker's in LOVE!!! But somebody else is in love too, and Sheriff Parker is gonna have himself some competition. And what're Wolfe and Butch up to these days? You'll have to find that one out yourself.
I figured that with all that stuff going on, that this would have made a grand finale. But at times it got silly enough to the point that it resembled a soap opera. It got on my nerves a couple of times, but it was still acceptable. Ok, it was a good read! But still love my Skary, and I still say BOO HISS to an ending like this. It just gives me an excuse to find more by Rene Gutteridge and find her other talent!

Frustrated, irate, and helpless, Bennie does the only thing he can: he starts to write a letter. But what begins as a hilariously excoriating demand for a refund soon becomes the cri de coeur of a life misspent, talent wasted.
Ford pens his letter in a voice that is a marvel of lacerating wit, heart-on-sleeve emotion, and wide-ranging erudition, all propelled by the fading hope that if he can just make it to the wedding, he has a chance to do something right in his life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Bennie's command of language as he describes his fellow strandees and his riotous embrace of his own feelings will have readers rooting for him." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Hard to put down
I found myself pulled into this book by the author's use of language, which was by turns lyrical, sarcastic, subtle, wickedly observant, and absolutely believable as the stream of consciousness of a poet manque, but also by Mark Bramhall's reading, which was, for me, spot-on.
It's hard not to love someone who takes aim and fires his wit at the airlines, but Bennie weaves his helpless fury through his tale of missed chances and regrets, and between the author and the reader, I couldn't help but be on Bennie's side. He's a world-class screw-up, but sweet and sad and never malicious, and I came to understand and forgive him.
I must say that having it read to me so engagingly has left me wondering how I would feel about this book had I read it myself. The writing is wonderful, but the performance put it over the top.
    I loved it!
I really loved this book. The narrator was wonderful and I think really gave life to Bennie. This was, of course, not about American Airlines at all, but merely the backdrop and opportunity for Bennie to examine his life and his plan. I feel like I need to listen again to the "Valenti" parts, because honestly I found those distracting from the story and wanted to ff through them. Somewhere along the line (early) I had NO idea what was going on with that, and just found those pieces annoying. However, I'm thinking they must weave into the story somehow, so would like to listen to that again.
But overall, this is a great book, humorous, sad, ironic, wonderfully told, wonderfully narrated. I do highly recommend it.
    Rambled a bit...
I doubt I would have finished this book if I'd been reading it rather than listening to it. Stories tend to drift around and characters float in and out.
Rather like a really, really, really long lay-over in an airport.
    Coincidence? I think not.
Story starts off well, drags.. then ends decently.
    Excellent
I don't know what the hell people on this site are looking for in a work of fiction that they're giving this book/reader less than 4-5 stars, but this book is excellent. Perhaps the title encouraged a little misunderstanding into the point of the narrative, but how would a 7-hour diatribe against an airline be at all entertaining? This story is compelling, if a little obvious (the drunken poet recants his misspent talent and youth), but the characters and wit are amazingly detailed and imaginative. The reader was excellent as well.
    Love song to language
It's the language in this one that makes it compelling.
Bennie's a flawed character, but he knows that. He keeps trying despite decades of indication that he's going to fail, and virtually every failure is of his own making.

    Members Reviews:
    Enough, already!
This book dragged out painfully long. I don't think the main characters actually met up until chapter nine. Then they did the "should I, shouldn't I" dance for several more chapters. It was excruciating! The characters were likable enough, but after a while it was like "Enough, already! Just get it done!" Unless you are in to that drawn-out tension of "will they every get together" (and I mean, REALLY in to it), I'd say pass on this book and save yourself the frustration.
    great story line!
This story line was so entailed. It is a very relaxing listen--which is perfect for bedtime stories. However, I listen when on my treadmill. It wasnt ideal for that--harder to follow the details. I havent read Freya North before. Definitely would read other stories by her.
    Tedious
Unfortunately that sums it up for me. Both main characters remain shallow and the plot is overly constructed.
The narrator also didn't seem to connect to the story.
    Jewel of a Listen
I really enjoyed this lengthy listen on my journey to and from work each day. The heroine is believeable as Freya's characters tend to be, and as a lover of gemology I could tell she'd done her homework though don't worry that this is a book on the technical aspects of jewelry making because , put quite simply , it is a charming tale of first love .yes there are times when you feel you could bash the two main characters heads together because they get 'the wrong end of the stick' about something but this is how life is,this is how relationships are. So do Arlo and Petra live happily ever after ? Will her sleep walking get her into lots of trouble ? What tragic thing happened to Arlo's ex. You'll have to listen and find out.
    Totally gorgeous
One of the nicest, most credible and grown up listens so far. Wonderful central characters that you can care about, and a nicely paced narrative that exuded warmth
