    oh please
Regardless of the description -this is a ROMANCE novel. I should remember to listen to a sample of anything I think of buying.
    Disappointed
The character development is weak as are the women. The message seems to be, men and making them happy is the end goal for women. Ugh.
    What ?!
Would you try another book from Barbara Freethy and/or Lynn Sharrott?
    No
    Any additional comments?
The drive from Charleston to Columbia is 2 hours long. This book kept me awake during the drive just by giving me fodder for snarky comments. A secretary? Who relays personal messages? And it's a mystery that someone who wasn't intimately connected to an event could possibly know details about it? I was sure this book had to be written by an old woman. The dialog, which is 75% of the book, is stilted and dated. And the plot, as much as I endured, is eye crossing, with no development of characters or scene. Dull. Boring. Inane.

Good story but the reader is terrible
I listen to a lot of books and can usually listen past the reader, but this reader is SO "sing songy" that it ruins the book. I enjoyed the story, since I enjoy the author but the reader ruins it. Every end of each sentence is drawn out. Terrible.
Read the book, don't listen to it.
    Drivel
I can't believe I bought romance-drivel! I was hurrying to purchase a long, unabridged book before a long day in the car. Mindless torture.
    not impressed
disappointed in this author - the style was bland and the plot seemed really contrived. maybe it was just me. true, there was mystery, but when you really don't CARE who did what and why, then what good is that mystery? just flat.
    Needs a different narrator
Loved the story line. But the narrator was WAY TO SYRUPY i had to fast foward thru a lot of it
    Poor Narration and Dull Storyline
The narration (or lack of eduting) is very distracting. with long pauses where the narrator is drinking or something. the book goes on too long with a story that is not interesting. nome of the characters are likeable except the Irish Grandma, who is not in the book very much

    Excellent story & awesome ending
The Cates sisters give all women life lessons on how to move forward by letting go. Great read!
    Five Stars
Great novel for older women to read
    Fantastic!!
Ruth-Miriam Garnett has done a splendid job on her first published novel. Her characters are rich with personality, spunk, and freshness. Three influentual African American women (Rebecca, Claudia, and Gracelyn) living in their childhood home with their three husbands. All three men are sick, and these women have sacrificed a lifetime with these men with all the good and bad. But the eldest sister, Rebecca puts hope in God, and she leads her sister on a journey to free them of their sickly husbands and to begin a brand new life. Two husbands are sent away before the book ends, but Rebecca's husband is still there after the book end. There is a reason, and you must read the book to find out why. Also, in their grand agenda is to get rid of the woman hateing, wife beating Pastor Wilson. That in itself is a riot to read how far Rebecca goes, what she discovers, and how the Pastor reacts.
Do they succeed in their quest for a new life? They not only succeed but managed to meet former First Lady Hillary Clinton, create a Harriet Tubman play with the children in their church, bring all the women in the community together, and yes, Rebecca flies to Paris to the new love of her life.
It is a powerful novel that shows women, of any age of any color, that they can start again, be strong, and be happy. I really enjoyed reading this book. The wonderful little sisterly conversations, the description of the orchids, and the sweet sincerity each sister shared for each other and other people in their community. The book has a life of its own, and for me, it was well worth the time to read.
    Joy.
    A Good Debut Novel
This book was so empowering. You have these three sisters who marry men, who in turn ended up being invalids for the women to keep. One has terminal cancer, another is brain damaged and yet another is an alcoholic. The women take care of the men until they decide that they took care of them long enough and make provisions to put them in Nursing homes. At the same time, they deal with a misogynist, sanctimonious and sneaky preacher, the town that hold them in high esteem and love that comes from unexpected places. These Cates sisters will have you laughing, weeping and applauding them that you hate to let the book go when it's over.

The characters really came alive in this story
    absolutely joyous
Believable characters, good contrast between contemporary American city life and small-town life. Enjoyable from start to finish.
    A very enjoyable read
I am a Billie Letts fan and always enjoy her quirky characters and the small-town southern feel her books provide. I also enjoy a good mystery and this one has some of that too. No, this book will probably not change your life or alter your perspective on the world, but if you are looking for a nice, well-told story, this should fit the bill.
    A small town whodunnit
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I purchased this book because I am a big fan of Billy Letts other story, Where the Heart Is. This book drew me in, however, I was not a fan of the ending or the romantic story in it.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Devil Wears Prada gives a rich and hilarious new meaning to "the boss from Hell." Narrated in Andrea's smart, refreshingly disarming voice, it traces a deep, dark, devilish view of life at the top only hinted at in gossip columns. From sending the latest, not-yet-in-stores Harry Potter to Miranda's children in Paris by private jet, to serving lattes to Miranda at precisely the piping hot temperature she prefers, Andrea is sorely tested each and every day - and often late into the night. She puts up with it all by keeping her eyes on the prize: a recommendation from Miranda that will get Andrea a top job at any magazine of her choosing. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a million girls would die for may just kill her. And even if she survives, she has to decide whether the job is worth the price of her soul.
    Critic Reviews:
"Miranda's behavior is so insanely over-the-top that it's a gas to see what she'll do next, and to try to guess which incidents were culled from real life." (Amazon.com)
"Weisberger has penned a comic novel that manages to rise to the upper echelons of the chick-lit genre." (Publishers Weekly)

    A light read but entertaining
This book is pure junk food: No substance for a literary mind but a great read for giving your brain a rest. The length is good and the story keeps moving in this abridged addition. There were no preachy or long, whiny diatribes of the injustices Andrea suffered at the hands of her boss, (which I absolutely hated in the Nanny Diaries.) However, it annoyed me that the author weakly tried to tackle a moral/social issue (which is more important, job or friends). I think it detracted from the strengths of the book, which were its gossipy look into fashion publishing and those wonderful interactions with the devil herself, Miranda Priestly.
Could not listen to reader's delivery
The story is similar in theme to "The Nanny Diaries" (young woman works for affluent female "Boss from Hell". I tried to enjoy the story, but the reader's delivery was absolutely unbearable to listen to. The delivery was flat, drippy, emotionless. I think I'll go to the library and borrow the printed book to read.
    Not funny enough
A tale of a 23 year-old in her first out of university job. The story is very light and is supposed to be funny. But rather than finding the main character's "boss from hell" situation sympathetic and amusing, I found it pathetic and annoying. Her reason for staying in her job is a little thin and therefore it's hard to feel she's a victim. I did break a smile a few times but never really laughed.
    No bad, but not good...
Ok so this isnt exactly the greatest book in the world, but it is amusing and entertaining especially if you've ever had to deal with cranky bosses and co-workers. The plot and the main characters are weak, but if you are looking for a little humor and nothing to substanial then this is for you!
    Whaa Whaa Whaa
What kind of intellegent young woman would put up with this treatment for this long? Shades of The Nannie Diaries. Very whiney, very shallow. Very boring.

    Title: The Separation
    Author: Christopher Priest
    Narrator: Joe Jameson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-14-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 15 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Separation is the story of twin brothers, rowers in the 1936 Olympics (where they met Hess, Hitler's deputy). One joins the RAF, and captains a Wellington; he is shot down after a bombing raid on Hamburg and becomes Churchill's aide-de-camp. His twin brother, a pacifist, works with the Red Cross, rescuing bombing victims in London. But this is not a straightforward story of the Second World War: This is an alternate history. The two brothers - both called J.L. Sawyer - live their lives in alternate versions of reality.
In one, the Second World War ends as we imagine it did; in the other, thanks to efforts of an eminent team of negotiators headed by Hess, the war ends in 1941. The Separation is an emotionally riveting story of how the small man can make a difference; it's a savage critique of Winston Churchill, the man credited as the saviour of Britain and the Western World; and it's a story of how one perceives and shapes the past.
    Members Reviews:
    The lost moment of turning
Christopher Priest is a writer of meticulously constructed, Borges-esque literary puzzles, wherein narrators are unreliable, story elements sometimes contradict each other, and everything is open to different interpretations. In his Dream Archipelago books, theres a secondary world, complete with its own geography and nation-states, thats treated as being as true, if not more true than the readers reality.
An alternate reality also factors into this novel, but its one in which the Second World War ended differently, with Britain seizing a chance for an early separate peace with Germany, at a point when it became clear that continued fighting was in neither countrys interest. This isnt much of a spoiler, since the novel opens in 1999 of this alternate timeline, just as a historian comes across a strange discrepancy in the records.
The novel that follows plays games with the two parallel realities, giving us the stories of two twin brothers, both called J.L., who compete together in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where a significant rift forms between them. In the years that follow, one brother, Jack, becomes a bomber pilot for the RAF, which the other, Joe, becomes a conscientious objector and serves as an ambulance man for the Red Cross. First, we hear Jacks version of events, from his own journal, but other accounts that follow, including Joes, call some of its events into question.
For Jack, the war progresses and ends as it did in our world, but he finds himself haunted by his brothers principles, as the Allied campaign of vengeance becomes more brutal. In Joes own story, hes instrumental in peace negotiations between the British government and Nazi deputy fuhrer Rudolph Hess, leading to an armistice between Britain and Germany in 1941. In real life, Hess flew to Britain claiming to have peace terms, but was disowned by the Nazi government. But was something else going on?
The separation between the two timelines becomes somewhat muddled, in a way that hinges on confused identities, and Priest introduces a number of puzzles into the story, including the suggestion that several key figures besides the two J.L.s have their own doppelgangers. Im not sure I picked up on all the clues.
If youre familiar with World War Two, though, its all pretty fascinating. The posturing Churchill and the creepy Hess are both convincingly written, with suggestions of motives more self-serving than met the eye.

    FUNNY
A laugh out loud story, so pleased I chose to listen to it rather than read the book the narrator did an excellent job.
Essential reading for followers of th Walsh family
What does Caroline Lennon bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
    Great narration.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
This is funny, engaging and fairy short. I loved it because I had read several of Marian Keyes books on members of the Walsh and this is written as background from Mammy Walsh. However, I expect it can be enjoyed independent of the other books.
    Outrageously funny
For those of you yet to be acquainted with the Walsh family, you are in for a treat. I was pleased that only a very small part of this book was taken up by briefly (but very accurately), introducing the five Walsh sisters who each have their own opportunity to shine in their own books. The wisdom, wit and angst of Mammy Walsh quite rightly forms the backbone of this book. She is a delightful character and I would have thoroughly enjoyed more of her musings on her life experiences. It will therefore come as no surprise when I say my only criticism of this book is that it is too short. The audio version is of a very high standard and in parts was narrated so brilliantly, I literally walked into a wall whilst listening to it when out walking, I was laughing so much. It's not very often a book can have me still smiling at remembered passages, long after I've removed my headphones. This one did!
    Reminded me of my childhood!!
Real and funny as my family was even the way they spoke. I enjoyed it very much. Hope to hear more from Marian Keyes.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ben Dibbuk has a good job, an accomplished wife, a bright college-age daughter, and a patient young mistress. Even as he goes through the motions of everyday life, however, inside he feels nothing. The explanation for this emotional void lies in the years he spent as a blacked-out drunk before pulling his life together - years in which he knows he committed acts he doesn't remember.
Then a woman from his past turns up at a gala for his wife's new gig at a magazine called Diablerie and makes it clear that she remembers something he doesn't. Their encounter sets wheels in motion that will propel Dibbuk toward new knowledge and perhaps the chance to feel again. With the same erotic force as Killing Johnny Fry, but grounded in a far darker vision of human nature, Diablerie is a transfixing new novel from one of our most powerful writers.

©2003 Tim Winton; (P)2004 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
    Editorial Reviews:
Tim Wintons In the Winter Dark is a tightly-wound psychological thriller, characterized by sparse description and rapidly escalating tension. This intense audiobook introduces listeners to four characters, living on adjacent plots of land in the Australian outback, who are brought together in terror by a series of violent incidents which cause each neighbor in turn to begin manifesting his or her darkest selves and secrets.
James Wrights gruff, no-nonsense voice is the perfect vessel for this taut audiobook, and even as fear builds in the text, Wrights performance remains agonizingly steady, a strong, grounded counterpoint to the dizzying spiral of violent emotions building within this gripping work.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is Winton at his most disciplined, most distilled - and its an unforgettable story, told with the simplicity that only a consummate artist can achieve." (Sun Herald)
    Members Reviews:
A departure from the ordinalry, A+++
Can't go wrong with Tim Winton.
    Very Impressive
Based on the other reviews, and some folk I've spoken to, Tim Winton is the kind of writer who polarises opinion. And it seems his voice is one which has immediate impact in this regard. People very quickly seem to either love or hate his work.
I, for one, fall heavily into the "love" side. Winton's greatest strength appears to be his ability to get the reader to tell themselves the story. His style is rich in mood and sparse in explanation, giving readers cause to do some of the work themselves. I'm sure that approach is not for everyone, but it works for me. I feel like an investor - a conspirator even - every time I read a Winton story.
In The Winter Dark is most assuredly a bleak tale. The characters are irascible and dark, seemingly cauterised from every other part of existence. At times it feels as if they sense the reader observing them, trying to get to know them, and they step back and close off. It's the kind of trait which is very strong in (but not exclusive to) country Australia, where the story is set.
This is by no means a horror story, but I feel horror readers would perhaps appreciate this more than casual readers. Though there's enough within the story to suggest a tangible danger to life and limb, it's the darkness of the characters' memories and experiences which quicken the pulse.
    Definitely Dark..
Dark is right. The characters and the landscape are full of dreams that mock their inability to know what they want from life, let alone have the courage to strive for it. The girl is in the same mould - although more "feral" than the older inghabitants of the valley (portraying the reality that each generation is gettting less "fit" for any life).
