John Poothullil, MD, FRCP, author of Eat, Chew, Live joins Mark Alyn to talk about one of the biggest epidemics in America, diabetes.
Dr. Poothullil talks about a new approach to diabetes, an epidemic that is rapidly expanding around the world. One in 4 adults over 65 in the US being a Type 2 diabetic and 1 in 3 people over age 20 is pre-diabetic. He discusses how diabetes is a serious medical condition that can cause damage to body cells and lead to neuropathy, erectile dysfunction in men, blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and a premature death.
Medical science commonly blames diabetes on insulin resistance, but Dr. Poothullil believes this theory is incorrect. He explains how insulin resistance claims that only three types of body cells become resistant to the hormone insulin, produced in the pancreas. Insulin tells cells to let glucose into them, but if cells are resistant, it causes the glucose to remain in the bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar and diabetes.
Dr. Poothulli shares his findings based on the 20 years of research he's done. He has concluded that insulin resistance cannot be accurate. There is another body metabolism that can explain more logically how high blood sugar develop. Dr. Poothullil explains how the over consumption of grains causes a normal body metabolism to go haywire, creating high blood sugar. This is why diabetes is spreading throughout the world in every country where grain products become a major portion of the diet. This new theory explains why even thin people are getting the disease , why teenagers getting it and why some pregnant women develop gestational diabetes and then shed it after giving birth.
With this information, Dr. Poothulli shares with the Late Night Health audience how they can prevent and even reverse high blood sugar and diabetes. Specific changes in diet can help people avoid the risks rather than taking drugs or injecting insulin for a lifetime.
