  • Zika Virus and Mosquitos - What To Do (Part 2) - Dana Cohen 8/19/16
Dr Dana Cohen joins the Late Night Health show to talk about the signs and symptoms of chikungunya, West Nile and Zika virus and practical prevention steps to keep you calm; as well as five things that can make you a mosquito magnet and what steps to take to minimize your exposure to bites.

In a recent survey of more than 2,700 respondents, WebMD found that people were more concerned about mosquitoes this year than in past years and are planning to take additional steps to prevent mosquito bites. When asked which diseases spread by mosquitoes were of the most concern, 67 percent said Zika and 60 percent said West Nile; followed by 17 percent being concerned about yellow fever and another 17 percent worried about dengue fever.

With officials in the state of Florida confirming mosquitoes are now transmitting Zika there, and nearly all U.S. states reporting the first confirmed West Nile mosquitoes of the season have arrived, Cohen says it’s a good time to do an assessment of your surroundings and self to make sure you are taking proper prevention measures to calm fears.

“It’s important to know the facts when it comes to mosquito bites and the diseases they spread,” said Cohen. “There are steps can take to reduce your exposure; it’s not something that’s just going to happen to you and you do have some control with prevention strategies.”

“What’s driving a lot of fear about mosquito bites this year is the intensive coverage on Zika, but Zika is not the only virus they spread and there are even more dangerous ones we need to make ourselves aware of,” said Dana Cohen, M.D., a nationally renowned internal and integrative medicine specialist. “West Nile virus is a real problem this time of year in almost every state and the lesser talked about chikungunya virus is another one we need to be aware of right now.”

  • 5 Ways to Lessen Arthritis Pain (Part 1) - Dave Foreman 8/5/16
There are many ancient herbal therapies that are often ignored that could bring much needed pain relief and reduced swelling for people struggling with arthritis. Dave shares with Mark Alyn on Late Night Health five ways to mitigate arthritis with ancient herbal remedies.

Approximately 2.1 million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis but new research published at the Mayo Clinic could help doctors better predict and prevent it from occurring.

Scientists have discovered that the bacterium in your gut has more responsibilities than just breaking down food. In fact, intestinal microbiota and metabolic
signatures could help scientists build a predictive
profile for who is likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis and the exact course the disease will take on the body.

“Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body mistakenly attacks itself,” said David Foreman, known as “The Herbal Pharmacist,” who started his career as a registered pharmacist with a strong belief in natural medicine and uses his expertise in physiology, pharmacology and natural medicine to educate consumers on cutting edge approaches to natural health and healing. “It not only breaks down tissues around joints, causing swelling that can erode bone and cause deformity, but the disease can also damage the skin, eyes, heart, lung and blood vessels.”

Connecting the dots between gut microbiota and
rheumatoid arthritis could help millions of Americans
who currently suffer from this debilitating disorder. A
paper published in Arthritis and Rheumatology
reported that the presence of bacterium Prevotella
histicola in the gut decreased symptom frequency and
 severity with fewer inflammatory conditions
associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The bacteria used
as a treatment produced fewer side effects such as
weight gain and villous atrophy (a condition that
prevents the gut from absorbing nutrients).

    Scientists
say continued research, especially on humans, could
lead to preventative treatments, but in the meantime
Foreman says there are many ancient herbal therapies that are often ignored that could bring much needed pain relief and reduced swelling for people struggling with arthritis. Dave shares with Mark Alyn on Late Night Health five ways to mitigate arthritis with ancient herbal remedies.

  • Health Begins in the Gut (Part 1) - Julia Loggins 8/5/16
According to gut health expert Julia Loggins, It Takes Guts To Be Happy! And that's the name of her book. She joins Late Night Health to sharing the secrets of great digestion, the key to health and happiness

Julia teaches men and women from 9 to 90 where their colon is and how it works. Julia talks with Mark Alyn about her joy sharing the tools used to save her life. Having spent a great deal of her childhood hospitalized with life-threatening illnesses including asthma, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis and auto-immune breakdown, she was lucky enough, at age 17, to meet medical doctor, Robert Pottenger.

His family pioneered the understanding that environmental toxins were just that -- toxic -- quite a revolutionary position in the 1960s, when Monsanto was known only for sponsoring a cool ride at Disneyland. Julia explains he was the first medical doctor to tell my parents that the drugs I was being given to "save my life" -- everything from steroids to experimental asthma meds -- were responsible for the breakdown of my immune system, my kidneys, lungs and liver, and my daily struggle to live and breathe. He prescribed something entirely new: an all-organic diet, free of preservatives, sugar, wheat, dairy, processed foods and fake fats. It was the beginning of my study of regenerative health, detoxification and the bottom line to restoring vitality, which is the gut.

Colonics are key to healing the colon -- the last six feet of our intestinal tract -- and improving our digestion. Ninety percent of our serotonin, the neurotransmitter that makes us feel happy and optimistic, is made in the gut. Eighty percent of the immune system is in the gut. How happy do you feel when your tummy is hurting? How clearly can you think? Not very! Colonics flush the impacted waste that is literally crushing surrounding organs, draining our energy and stifling our mood. The human body today is not physically or psychologically that different from that of our cave men and women ancestors. Therefore, we do not assimilate or eliminate foods that are processed, sprayed, poisoned, or otherwise tampered with. We store them in our vital organs, until they make us sick.

We all know the stats on catastrophic disease in this country: The World Health Organization predicts 1 in 2 Americans will get cancer and/or diabetes. Is there no hope? Thankfully, there is. We can detoxify and nourish our bodies with whole, organic foods, juices and clean our colons. A painless, simple procedure, colonics irrigate the colon with purified water and, over the course of a half a dozen sessions, flush 5-30 (yes, really!) pounds of stored waste. Colonics are a safe and effective tool to speed up metabolism, which encourages weight loss, and balance the hormones.

Silent screen star Mae West reportedly credits colonics for her ageless beauty and perfect skin. In the next few weeks Mark is going to have a colonic and will share his feelings about the treatment.

  • Whole Person Care - Body and Soul (Part 1) - Mara Benner 5/6/16
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, “In the future, Americans will be healthier, because our health-care system will treat us as whole persons. That is, the artificial separations between physical, behavioral and mental-health care will have disappeared.”

Mara Benner, a healthcare professional with 30 years of experience working with patients, doctors and staff, has employed this concept in her company "Four Directions Wellness." She explains how a new paradigm shift in healthcare is coming on this edition of Late Night Health.

Healthcare has been splintered into different areas. Benner believes that it is to the benefit of patients to treat the entire person with a combination of body, mind, emotion and spirit. She promotes an integrative approach to caring for people, merging these different areas into a single constructive method of healing.

The discussion touches on the increasing Aging Population, increasing Chronic Illnesses and offers a focus on prevention rather than treating disease. Benner explains the disconnect and lack of engagement between patients and healthcare providers. The system is fragmented and lacking Whole Person Considerations.

Another aspect of Four Directions Wellness is the addition of Eastern Healing Techniques to what is considered traditional Western Medicine. The program discusses how Western Medicine works well with Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. She talks about blending ancient techniques including Acupuncture/Chiropractic/Massage, Energy Healing Therapies/Reiki, Guided Imagery/Meditation, Nutrition/Natural Products, Qi Gong/Tai Chi/Yoga and Spiritual Care with modern medicine.

The integrative aspect of Four Directions Wellness is the cornerstone of the company. According to the Duke University Integrative Medicine Website
“Integrative medicine is an approach to care that puts the patient at the center and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health. Employing a personalized strategy that considers the patient’s unique conditions, needs and circumstances, it uses the most appropriate interventions from an array of scientific disciplines to heal illness and disease and help people regain and maintain optimum health.” Four Directions is associated with the GW Center for Integrative Medicine.

  • Milk May Be Good For You! (Part 1) - Emma Aer 7/22/16
New research indicates that milk, cheese and butter may actually be good for you. The studies show that the fats in dairy may essentially protect the heart. This means the 40 year old idea of low fat is healthy may be wrong. Emma Aer CEO of Finlandia Cheese visits with Late Night Health to discuss cheese and butter and the various health benefits of these dairy products.

It seems that even 60 years the farmers at Finlandia knew their cheese was superior. Using only high quality milk from cows raised with specific rules and guidelines, Finlandia butter and cheese ranks as one of the premiere dairy products in the world! This award-winning cheese is produced in the United States following the strict guidelines set in Finland. Finlandia is a cooperative company, made up of farmers producing milk adhering to the guidelines.

Butter has gotten a bad rap for years. With a high fat content, people have been lead to believe that butter is not healthy. Margarine, a butter replacement, (developed in the late 1860s in France as a cheap replacement for butter) has become a staple in the American (and western countries) diet. Margarine is a blend of hydrogenated oils, saturated fats and water. These oils are extremely unhealthy. Besides, margarine does not taste like butter.

Today butter is even part of a diet that mixes butter with coffee! This has proved to be an effective

The Finlandia butter sold in the US is actually made in Finland. It is pure and natural, without chemicals or preservatives. Finlandia offers a variety of cheese products that are all naturally lacking lactose. Most other cheeses have lactose, which can affect those who are lactose intolerant (not being able to digest the lactose).

  • A Man's Man - Taking Care of Your Family - Donald Carpenter 7/22/16
Face it; taking care of your responsibilities is good for your physical, emotional and financial health. Markets are volatile right now. The television news is only confusing things. Pundits are everywhere, contradicting themselves with every wild swing of the index. The basic idea is to "Love your family. Take care of your family. Work. Insure. Save. Invest. Plan. Protect. You'll be fine."

Use the following check list as a quick reference:

    o Love your wife
    o Love your kids
    o Live for your family
    o Grow up
    o Curb your spending
o Buy a Ferrari (just kidding)
    o Insure
    o Invest
    o Save
o Live your life, not the neighbors'
    o Dream your goals
    o Plan
    o Protect the estate
o Believe in our country, our economic culture, and our markets
    o Study
    o Resist TV
o Grow corn in the beneficent universe
    o Work, work, work
    o Feed the beast
    o Go to asset classes
    o Diversify
    o Measure yourself
    o Balance and rebalance
    o Opportunism
    o Hire a pro
    o No whining
o Pray (Probably should put this first!)

Carpenter, has a few questions for family men:

Question 1: What happens to your business, the family home, and your stunning collection of Ferraris and antique golf clubs once you're not with us any longer?

Question 2: What happens to your business, the family home, and your stunning collection of Ferraris and antique golf clubs if you or someone in your immediate family has a tragic accident, resulting in severe injury or death?

Question 3: What happens to your business, your business succession plans, your retirement plan, and that dream of sailing off into the sunset if your business partner suddenly drops dead of a heart attack and your new business partners are now his two twenty-something twins, Tommy and Timmy?

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of potential disasters out there. Everybody's situation is different. But the key is to safeguard your family. If you've made it this far in this survival guide, the hard part is behind you. Be proud, be brave. You're "manning up." You're securing, sustaining, loving, and protecting. You're finally getting back on target.

Donald F. Carpenter, Jr. author of The Family's Man's Stock Market Volatility Survival Guide makes no bones about it and answers these questions in his interview with Mark Alyn on Late Night Health. His book, The Family Man's Stock Market Volatility Survival Guide: How to Defend Your Family in Any Economy, is intended only for family men...with families that they love, adore, and sacrifice for. And for men who are ready to "man up" to their responsibilities.
