  • Summer Time Skin Care (Part 2) - Michael Lin MD 5/27/16
With summer weather just around the corner, it's time to take a look at protecting our skin from the sun. With shorts, bikinis, tank tops and other skin revealing clothing, it's important to take care of the largest organ in your body.

Dermatologist Michael Lin offers a wide range of ideas on taking good care of your skin. It's no news sun damage is linked to cancer. Cancer of the skin if found early, is almost always curable. Getting checked by a dermatologist at least once a year is a sensible way to catch any signs of irregularity.

Remember being on the beach or near a pool as a kid soaking up the rays? Then smearing you with baby oil and iodine? Having bad sunburn years as a teen may cause skin issues in adulthood. Keep your children safe and don't over expose them to the sun.

Summer tans are so yesterday. Having clear, beautiful skin is the 21st Century beauty standard. European and Asian cultures protect skin Avoid tanning booths as these may cause extra difficulties. Staying out of the sun is the best single way of avoiding old looking skin, cancer and other skin issues. Wear large hats to protect your face and walk with a parasol or umbrella.

Daily application of sun blocks is crucial to being outside. Even in winter months using sunscreen is important to the health of your skin. Dr. Lin recommends an SPF factor 15. He cautions to use products that don't have parabens, which may cause additional problems. Also be sure to use products that don't contain hormones. Studies are finding that these ingredients may wreak more problems with your body.

Sun blocking clothing is a new method of preventing UV rays from harming your skin. You can feel the warmth of the sun yet stop the UV from causing damage.

  • Self Healing -The Power of the Mind (Part 1) - Liberty Forest 5/21/16
Studies conducted on the mind clearly show we don't know much about how it works. Oh, we understand the physical aspects of the brain. We know the chemical changes and composition of the brain. However, the astounding power of the mind we don't know fully understand. Free spirit and creative guru Liberty Forrest shares how to self healing can be done with your mind.

Albert Einstein's quote "we only use 10% of our mind" makes me think. Imagine what we could do if we used only fifty percent? The idea of a sugar pill curing a disease is something that amazes most people. It's called the placebo effect.

Evidence indicates that 50% of all disease is done by the patient believing he/she will be cured. It's the drugs. It's not the doctor. It's not the surgery. It's believing that the doctor knows what to do and is fixing the problem. The real answer is faith that the patient will be cured.

Self healing goes back to the father of modern medicine. Hippocrates says "physician heal thyself". This is part of his oath that doctors still embrace on becoming a doctor. It's all about the power of the mind and healing yourself.

  • USX Veterans Mount Everest Expedition -Todd Burnett 5/24/16
Climbing Mount Everest is one of the biggest challenges facing mountain climbers. With 100 mile per hour winds, below freezing temperatures, this is a challenge not many people want to face. It's a challenge that most people could not face.

To bring awareness of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) to the public, a group of American veterans created U.S. Expeditions and Explorations USX (@TeamUSX) non-profit organization. Command Sergeant Major Todd Burnett (retired) co-founder of the organization provides an update on Late Night Health. The organization is designed to help soldiers and other members of the military combat PTSD. The staggering fact is more military personnel have died from suicide due to PTSD than have died in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The climbing team consists of both active duty military personal as well as veterans who volunteered to bring this issue to the American people. On the team is retired Staff Sergeant Chad Jukes, who lost his right leg while serving as the lead gun truck commander on a supply convoy in northern Iraq.

In the last few weeks a friend of Burnett ended his life due to the stress of PTSD. Burnett is continuing USX to save the life of the next veteran who feels his life is on the edge. PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by terrifying events with symptoms lasting months or even years later that interfere with quality of life, and can increase suicide risk if not addressed properly.

On a happy note, one of the climbers, 1st Lieutenant Elyse Ping Medvigy was promoted to Captain on the climb. This is believed to be the first military promotion on Mount Everest.

Americans on both sides of the isle salute the members of the team and thank them for their tours of duty. To make a contribution to USX you can reach them at this website address: https://www.classy.org/checkout/donation?eid=57295

  • Myofascial Release Therapy - Kathy Murillo 5/21/16
Ever feel that you're holding the weight of the world on your shoulders? Or perhaps just the stress of everyday life? More than 50 years ago a simple, low-load stretch that releases tightness caused in muscles. It's called Myofascial Release Therapy.

This is not about working the muscles on your face but rather the tightness of the fascia. Fascia are the fibrous connective tissues enclosing a muscle. Kathy Murillo, an occupational therapist and advanced myofascial release practitioner talks about this form of physical therapy on this edition of Late Night Health.

Myofascial release techniques are used to loosen those tight areas on the body that cause pain. Neck, shoulders, arms, lower back and more are areas mostly treated with this form of physical therapy. Practitioners of MRT must be licensed in other healthcare areas such as doctors of chiropractic, massage therapists, sports injury specialists or physical therapists.

MRT is often used in combination with other therapies. The goal is to reduce pain from those stiff and tight areas where movement may be restricted. MRT enhances and increases the effectiveness of the other therapies.

The exact phrase "myofascial release" was coined in the 1960s by Robert Ward, an osteopath who studied with Ida Rolf, the originator of Rolfing. Ward, along with physical therapist John Barnes, are considered the two primary founders of Myofascial Release.[5] [6] Some practitioners use the term "myofascial release therapy" or "myofascial trigger point therapy" referring to the treatment of trigger points. The phrase has also been loosely used for different manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue manipulation work such as connective tissue massage, soft tissue mobilization, foam rolling, and strain-counterstrain techniques. Myofascial techniques can be described as passive (patient stays completely relaxed) or active (patient provides resistance as necessary), with direct and indirect techniques used in each.
