Late Night Mysteries

Faizal had just arrived home from a late-night movie outing with his colleagues.

As usual, he would set his shoes on the rack, close the front door and turn left into the kitchen where he would wash his feet and drink some water before heading up to his room.

While he was rummaging through the fridge, he heard a loud “thump” from the upper part of the stairs. He ignored it, thinking it must have been Jamal fooling around.

Then another loud “thump”!

"Teh Tarik and maybe a plate of noodles would be heaven right now. So hungry."

Lukman stepped off his bike, took out his helmet and walked towards the site. That was when he hesitated.

He stopped as he saw something at the front of the stall. Two huge stone tigers stood guard outside the entrance to the place. He was taken aback by the life-sized statue and took a few steps back.

Wadi woke up suddenly, heart beating wildly and drenched in sweat. The new air-conditioning unit he had just installed did not seem to have any effect on him at that moment.

"Remember to pay. Pay what?!"

Wadi repeated to himself, wrecking his brain trying to figure out what the dream was trying to tell him. As sat on his bed, too afraid to go back to sleep, his mind wandered back to a time, many months back when he has had enough of being poor.

A few steps away from the landing was the long corridor that will lead to his unit. There, in a straight row, were five figures in white, sitting on the parapet, all looking at him.

He froze.

He stepped back and the putrid, pungent smell hit him fast. He turned to his left
where he thought the young woman was.

In her place, was a gruesome, deformed face of a pontianak. She moved slightly
towards him and he screamed.

Turning, he literally flew down the stairs, heart pounding crazily.

The sound of loud whisperings woke him suddenly.

It was as if he was surrounded by many people and when he turned on the night lamp beside his bed, the weak light showed only an empty room.

Wincing at the pounding in his head, he walked to the kitchen to get a glass of water and rummaged in the medicine cabinet for something to ease his worsening headache.

As he turned off the kitchen lights, he caught a movement of sluggish shadows from the kitchen to his bedroom.

Casting it off as the effects of his groggy state, he ignored it and crawled back into his bed, confident that he would be back to his own healthy self the day after.

"Oh well, better than nothing.  At least there’s water."

Zaki turned the faucet full blast and filled up his pail.  As long as there was water, the gloomy surroundings did not matter much to him.  He squatted on the floor and scrubbed his clothes as best as he could.

Once done, he wrung them up and fill up his basket intending to hang them outside his dorm where they will catch the first ray of sun in the morning.

As he was cleaning up, he noticed a movement from the corner of his eyes.

He froze for a second, his heart beating wildly as the stories rushed through his head.

The scent hit him first.

A nice fragrant floral scent. In a matter of seconds, it turned cloyingly sweet that it almost choked him. He kept his eyes on the road as his heart skipped a beat.

Not long after, he noticed that cars on the slower lane were speeding past him. He was on the right most lane so why are the cars overtaking him?

By right, he should be the one speeding and cutting the other cars but no matter how hard he
stepped on his accelerator, it refused to pick up.

The car felt heavy to him.

As the clock above the counter ticked loudly above the silence of the Nurse's Station, Dewi, who was concentrating on a spreadsheet on the computer screen suddenly looked up and
realized that she was very much alone. Nurse Jenny and the medical
officer on duty, Dr Wu had left for their breaks at the pantry at the end of the hallway
and the sudden silence seemed to unnerve her.

The uneasy feeling settled around her and for the first time, she felt an air of dread, like
something unpleasant was about to happen to her.

The feeling dissipated when a Chinese lady appeared around the corner, carrying a
fruit basket.

At last, some company – she thought.

Dilla excused herself to go to the ladies at the end of the corridor just outside the cafe.  The corridor was quiet and the entrance to the restroom was dimly lit.

Just after the entrance on her right, separated by a wall was a baby changing station.   She hesitated at first, but then she overheard the sound of a woman changing her baby’s diaper and talking softly to the baby.

She immediately felt at ease and entered the restroom which consists of a row of 6 cubicles on one side and another row of 6 washbasins on the other.
