Systems are a gift. That is my top takeaway from my interview with Tanya Smith. And I'd never really thought of it that way. I kind of always looked at systems a little bit like the enemy. As I've launched this podcast, I have seen what a gift systems are. Once they are established there's no thought we have to put into it, there's no decisions we have to make, we know how it gets done and when it has to get done by. And we are able to automate more and more as we are discovering new tools that allow us to get it done even quicker. One of the benefits that Tanya gets by having systems in place is that she gets to make one of three choices with something as it comes in. She can either take action, automate the task or delegate it.

Get outside! It's no surprise that that is my top takeaway from my interview with Deirdre Wolownick, the oldest woman to have climbed El Capitan at age 70. It is no surprise that she is just passionate about having people get outside and really understand what they are capable of. She doesn't want people just sitting at home watching screens, and I agree completely.

Some reasons we should look to get outside more:

☀️While we are watching our screens we are consuming messages that are not always good for us. When we get outside we are creating and living.

☀️Outside we have the opportunity to find out what we are truly capable of and that can give us so much empowerment.

☀️When we get outside we get the idea to try new things.

Every once in a while you meet someone who just blows you away. Deirdre Wolownick is that type of person. At age 70, she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan for the second time. She broke her own record from when she climbed it previously. She speaks over seven languages and is a prolific author, teacher, runner, artist, and musician. She is truly amazing and I am honored to have interviewed her. Listen in as she shares her views on living a full life.

Dierdre has taught five foreign languages on three continents for 44 years. Her writing has won awards; her independent publishing company produced award-winners and international sellers. In 1990, she founded and conducted the West Sacramento Community Orchestra, and plays in community orchestras and smaller ensembles (flute, piano/keyboard). At 55, she began running marathons and other races. At 59, she started rock climbing; at 66, she became the oldest woman to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan (with her son, Alex Honnold, of “Free Solo” fame). She celebrated her 70th birthday by going up El Cap again, and recently returned from a 3-country European speaking tour. In 2023, the documentary about her life, “Climbing Into Life,” will premiere at film festivals across the country.
