Earlier this month, Twitter announced it would be removing fake Twitter accounts. Even so, it’s doubtful the tone of online political discourse will change any time soon. Accounts will remain strongly rooted along party lines – with perhaps a bit less vitriol - thanks to the new Twitter regulations. But there's still all the disrespectful contempt that anonymity can bring. Nevertheless, Twitter appears to be the new barometer of the political pulse of the people... What's happening on Twitter is what's happening at the water cooler, in the media - and even at the grocery store!
Joining us to talk about 'the way people talk' in U.S. politics today is American journalist, Gloria Neal. – And later in the show, we'll put our talk to the test as we discuss Trump's new executive order aimed to keep America at work.

David Frum is the Senior Editor of The Atlantic and author of "Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic" (published earlier this year). His dislike for Trump is no secret – apparent not just in what he reports, but in his public appearances as well – including as a guest with Bill Mahar.
On July 19th, 2018, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order establishing a National Council for the American Worker. The Whitehouse event ringing in the new order was criticized in the media - resulting in lively Twitter feedback.
During this event, large organizations were making pledges to improve and increase training for the American worker over the next five years. The premise of the council is to “prepare Americans for the 21st-century economy and the emerging industries of the future.”

In the early hours of July 20th, Fox Business Network posted a clip of this event (on Twitter, below) – which was edited to show President Trump receiving oral pledges from company representatives that were present at the event – including those from FedEx, Home Depot, and IBM. In response, David Frum posted this:

1968 was an incredulous year: Pierre Elliot Trudeau becomes Prime Minister, the Warsaw Pact troops invade Czechoslovakia to end the "Prague Spring" of political liberalization, and thousands of refugees flee to Canada. It was during this same year that the United States was reeling from the overwhelming loss of its young men in Vietnam while grieving over the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., and Bobby Kennedy.

In today’s show, in a fashion inspired in part by New York Times article: 50 Years Later, It Feels Familiar: How America Fractured in 1968, we pay homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the messy year of ’68 as it correlates to present day.

And later in the show, I’m joined by special guest Bevin Branlandingham – as we talk about body ownership, self-care, and health for the new year. Throw those useless resolutions out the window! It’s time to look at everything differently :)

This Week's Guest: Bevan Brandlandingham

Bevin’s is a story about so many things: it’s about career-change, it’s about becoming aware of our media practices (what we consume in the media) – but also about self-care, self-awareness – as well as awareness and respect for others. She started out as a practicing lawyer – who walked away from that career to try and change the world around her in a whole new way!

Bevin goes by the stage name, Queer Fat Femme. She is a writer, performer, and cultural producer who believes that all bodies are good bodies and works to make the world safe for people to love themselves. An award-winning emcee and event producer, Bevin’s monthly body-positive dance party was named one of the reasons New York City is the Best City in the World by Time Out New York.

She moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and is excited to be part of an upstart community that turns the stereotype of thin-obsessed Hollywood on its head. Bevin was voted top entrepreneur in 2011 and a “Woman We Love” in 2014 by Go Magazine. She blogs at queerfatfemme.com and teaches dance aerobics, and offers body liberation coaching -  one on one and through workshops.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland says that taking it slow with NAFTA is a good thing because it allows time to consult with Canadians, and so we’d like to oblige the offer. Sujata Dey is the lead trade Campaigner at the Council of Canadians, Canada's leading social organization with over 100,000 members known for its work on trade agreements. Its chair, Maude Barlow, is a renowned anti-globalization activist. Ms. Barlow was pivotal in fighting Canada's first free trade agreement with the U.S, the ballot box issue of the 1988 election.

Ms. Dey coordinated the Food Safety, Agriculture, and Regulatory Cooperation in the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement report by the Council of Canadians and other groups. Dey has been active in lobbying against CETA, the EU-Canada deal, and the TPP, the Pacific deal, at the European Parliament, the Canadian Parliament, and in national parliaments all over Europe.

In February 2017, Salman Rushdie made a prediction about the fragility and state of America – and its showing signs of merit. It comes down to speed and vehement disagreement among parties and communities of people.

Prime Minister Trudeau was right in pointing out that we in Canada are not immune to racism, and so it’s prudent for us to watch and learn from what’s happening in the US right now – as fallout on social media is spilling over borders.

The last great recession was a time when the Obama administration would bail out the big bankers of America; as well as its automakers. Today, nearly a decade later, we move the bailout conversation to Canada – only it’s not just about a commercial industry, but about a public good and service. In a media landscape where digital-first news organizations are strengthening their foothold, the traditional newspapers are launching a bailout appeal (titled the Shattered Mirror Report) to the Canadian government to the tune of $350 million a year.

"Now, an association [News Media Canada] representing newspapers has put a dollar figure on that assistance: $350-million per year ... The group is asking for the creation of a Canadian journalism fund that would finance 35 per cent of newsroom costs, based on the number of journalists employed there – not including executive compensation, non-editorial costs such as interest payments, or journalist salaries above $85,000." –SUSAN KRASHINSKY ROBERTSON, The Globe and Mail

Confronting the Fragmentation of Services in Mental Healthcare

This week we talk about the fragmentation of services within the healthcare system, specifically regarding mental health. We’ll explore the story of a woman who lost her daughter, Tamara, to suicide in part because of her disenfranchisement with the system – something described quite well in a memoir recently published in The Walrus titled, Death by a Thousand Cuts.

Tamara Levine was a brilliant young woman whose fate was caught up in a quagmire of failed connections that would ultimately cause her to lose faith in the very system that was supposed to help her.

Carol Cowan-Levine, Tamara's mother, as well as a registered psychotherapist, joins us to share her important story. And later in the show – we’ll speak with Robert Moroz who is the Integrated Director of Outreach and Community Services for both Hotel-Dieu Grace Health and the Canadian Mental Health Association (Windsor), to discuss what needs to be done with the destructive, fragmented nature of our system.

Carol Cowan-Levine is a registered psychotherapist and the author of the memoir, Death by a Thousand Cuts, published in The Walrus on May 17th, 2017 (click here for link).

She has a Master’s Degree in Social Work, a post-graduate Diploma in Advanced Clinical Practice, with individuals, children, and families, and several additional post-graduate certificates. Her long-standing interest in psychotherapy has been demonstrated in her previous work at the Hospital for Sick Children, the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, as a trainer in the Ontario Child Welfare Training System, and as a practitioner in her own professional practice for more than 20 years.

In 1971, the media popularized the term ‘war on drugs’ after then-President Richard Nixon declared drug abuse as 'public enemy number 1.' With over fifty billion being spent on anti-drug initiatives, and with illicit drug use still on the rise, clearly, it hasn’t worked. And just as capitalists have found more clever ways to expand their profits and to compete in a global market, so too has the illegal drug industry.

This week I’m zooming in on the illegal drug trade – discussing what Canada’s doing about it, beginning with just two drugs on opposite ends of the spectrum. With tactics ranging from legalization to containment. We’ll discuss the struggle with the imperfections of the legalization of marijuana, while also fighting against the distribution of fentanyl.
