We’re going to learn and go over these suffixes seen widely in medical terminology: -itis, -oma, -osis, -ectomy, -tomy, -rrhea.

Lately, I've been in a very reflective mood and I've found the concept of podcasts to almost be therapeutic in expressing one's self and being vulnerable. Here, I talk about regret after hearing the idea broken-down in a TED Talk I had listened to recently. Just me rambling and sharing thoughts on this very concept. Something to think about I think.

Here, I get into the second declension neuter gender and the concept of substantive nouns. Why get into it? Because the more you know, the more you know! I get into a couple side tangents at both the beginning and end of this episode. Feel free to fast forward.

Ask yourself... Why are they called substantives? Might look like "substance?" I dunno though...

Here’s an example of a second-declension neuter noun: bellum, a word which means “war.” Let’s decline it together:

Here is an example of "Sum", declined in all persons (First singular, then plural.)

sum →  “I am”; sumus → “we are”; es → “you are”; estis → “y’all are/you (p) are/you all are”; est → “he, she, it is” or “there is”*; sunt → “they are”

In this episode, I dive into the understanding of the verb, "To be", which functions differently than the regular verbs we've dealt with before... That is, those that take on an Accusative Direct Object. Stay tuned for knowledge mode.

Here, I go, in-depth, into the second declension, where second declension includes mostly masculine and neuter nouns with -o- at the end of their base. With the addition of the second declension, we add a whole new set of vocabulary into the mix. Yay, more words! I do my best to draw out the process of forming a second declension noun, please do your best to visualize a declension table or look one up for reference.

Here I first get on a SOAP box in discussing the real reason as to why I love Latin and why this is more than a language podcast, but more like an "Everything" type of podcast. That's why I like Latin, because it amplifies your understanding of the world around you. After my five minute rant, I get into understanding parts of speech, and then apply it to their Latin counterparts. As I tell my students, they're just fancy-dancy-10-dollar words that mean simple grammatical concepts! 

The example I mention in the podcast:

“The grandmother of my girlfriend gave her daughter a coin from her purse, your majesty.”

This is why I love Latin... for the depth it gives to language in general. We go over the terms: Hypernatremia, Hyponatremia, Hypothermia, Hyperglycemia, Hypoglycemia, Armistice and Subpoena. Here we understand the importance of prefixes, affixes, suffixes, etc.
