  • 050: Latina Equal Pay Day 2022, with Jen Hemphill.

050: Latina Equal Pay Day 2022, with Jen Hemphill.Meet Jen Hemphill, host of Her Dinero Matters Podcast and accredited financial counselor who helps Latinas gain more money confidence. Jenn was born in Colombia to a “Gringo” dad -as she called him- and a Colombian mother, and lived in Bogotá until her and her family moved to the U.S. Jen aspired to become a Dentist, but didn’t have the stomach for it, literally! This led her to become a Physical Therapist specializing in Gerontology; however, becoming a military spouse made her change her career path to something more aligned with her new lifestyle. This is how she became an accredited financial counselor. It was thanks to this new career, and the need to attract an audience for her own business, that Jen became a podcaster. This was a consistent medium via which she could create content to help all women gain more money confidence. Not too long after the launch of her podcast, Jen realized that she was in a unique position to help Latinas become Reinas of their money, so she rebranded the podcast, which became what we now know as Her Dinero Matters. On this especial 50th episode, Jen joined us to talk about the upcoming Latina Pay Day, what it means, and what we can do to ensure we minimize the impact of the wage gap in our lives! We talked about many topics, including the importance of talking about salaries and advocating for salary transparency. We discussed the importance of negotiating your salary, including benefits, and asking for promotions. We also talked about what we can do to take control of our finances by creating a budget, implementing a plan, and celebrating our wins! According to the Lean In organization, Latinas make $0.46 per every $1 a non-hispanic white male makes, and 47% of Latina mothers are breadwinners. This means that our families are falling behind! Most factors that contribute to the existence of the wage gap are systemic and need to be fixed at a higher level. However, we HAVE to advocate for ourselves because no one else will do it! Get educated… take action!Learn more about the wage gap here:  https://leanin.org/equal-pay-data-about-the-gender-pay-gapConnect with Jen here: https://jenhemphill.com/Leave a review: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/latinx-can/id1524232753 Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/latinx-can-1354080

  • 049: Latinx Representation in Media, or Lack Thereof, with Carlos Salcines

Meet Carlos Salcines, a Cuban-American born and raised in McAllen, TX whose Latinidad helps him add a multicultural twist to how movies are being advertised in Hollywood. Carlos was born and raised in McAllen, TX, which meant he was exposed to the Cuban and Mexican cultures, and experienced the complexity of being a Latino in the U.S. early on in life. After graduating from high school, Carlos started College at the University of Texas at Austin, convinced that he would become a doctor, but always had a strong interest in movies and television. It was his cousin who had a tremendous influence in the fate of his career, after inviting him to attend the first ever Latin Grammy’s Ceremony in L.A. Once he returned from that trip, and only after reaching a compromise with his Cuban parents, Carlos doubled majored in radio, television and film, as well as advertising. Upon graduation, he packed his car and moved to L.A. to pursue his career as a creative, and ended up landing a job in advertising. Today, he is the V.P. of Multicultural Marketing at Warner Bros. Pictures. He has been involved in marketing movies like “In The Heights”, “Father of the Bride” and “Black Adam” to diverse audiences. Given the focus of his job, the topic of representation is top of mind, because he believes seeing ourselves represented in all fields is extremely important, as it can help us dream of what was once unthinkable. We discussed the lack of representation of the Latinx community in media and entertainment, and the frustration and disappointment we feel every time a show that centers Latinx stories gets cancelled. We also discussed what we can do to help see more people like us in media, telling stories that go beyond our suffering and resilience, and it all comes down to embracing the fact that Unidos Somos Mas. Being Latinx in the U.S. is complicated because we are not a monolith, but we can celebrate what unites us, while recognizing our differences. The invitation is to support Latinx shows/movies by watching, and encouraging our friends to watch… just like we do with shows that center other cultures and experiences in their stories.  Leave a review: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/latinx-can/id1524232753 Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/latinx-can-1354080

  • 048: Connecting the Dots all the Way to NASA…and Beyond! With Dr. Yajaira Sierra Sastre

Meet Dr. Yajaira Sierra Sastre, a Chemist who dreamed of becoming an astronaut as a little girl, and crated the opportunities that landed her a job at NASA.Dr. Sierra Sastre was born in Puerto Rico, and grew up looking at the night sky and pondering what was out there. She dreamed of becoming an astronaut since she was a kid, and embarked in experiences that enabled her to eventually land a job at NASA. After graduating from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Dr. Sierra Sastre became a teacher, and although her tenure was short-lived, she is a lifelong educator and is highly involved in STEM outreach activities. She then left the comforts of the tropics to pursue a PhD in Nanomaterial Sciences at Cornell University, and was excited about winter, because she once dreamed of living in Alaska! Being uncomfortable isn’t something she shies away from, which is how she ended up living at the bottom of a volcano, simulating the living conditions future humans will encounter in Mars. Throughout her career, Dr. Sierra Sastre never stopped pursuing her dream of becoming an astronaut, and applying for jobs at NASA, but for most of her career those applications didn’t materialize. However, she never gave up, and after 5 years of working as a project manager at the U.S. Money Factory, she finally joined NASA to support multiple missions, including the Mars Sample Return Mission that will bring samples back to earth collected by the Perseverance Rover. Dr. Sierra Sastre embodies the resilience and perseverance characteristic of the Latinx community. She encourages us to recognize that our culture is an asset, and that our multiculturalism brings tremendous value to organizations. • 047: When the Latin Asian Fusion is your Identity, with Dr. Enrique Lin Shiao.

Meet Dr. Enrique Lin Shiao, a scientist who has recognized that his immigrant experience, and the uncertainty associated with it, has helped him become a better scientist.Dr. Lin Shiao was born in Costa Rica to Taiwanese parents, who prepared him and his siblings to continue pursuing better opportunities in places beyond their native country. He embarked on an immigration journey to pursue academic opportunities, which led him to live in Germany, the U.K, and multiple cities in the U.S. His experiences living in various countries helped him become comfortable with uncertainty, which came in handy when pursuing his PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, because the path to becoming a doctor is full of uncertainties. Dr. Lin Shiao’s experience in the U.S. has helped him embrace his Asian identity even more than before. He carries his Asian and Latin roots wherever he goes, and tries to help and represent both communities as best he can. In fact, Dr. Lin Shiao played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic that extolled both cultures. He helped develop early stage diagnostics at Berkeley University that were used to test first responders, and the adjacent communities being affected by the virus.Unfortunately, being a person of Latinx and Asian descent has not been easy in the last 6 years. First due to the dangerous rhetoric used to refer to latinx people during the 2016 election, and most recently, due to the unfounded acts of hate directed towards the Asian community, as a result of the words chosen by our highest officials to refer to the coronavirus. Dr. Lin Shiao has also worked to contrast such harmful narratives by co-creating a podcast called Caminos en Ciencia, which highlights the careers of Latinx scientists. He also hopes that the activism of the last couple of years, such as the Stop Asian Hate movement, leads to meaningful change in our society. • 045: UWC Day ‘22: Peace Begins with Us, with UWC-USA President Dr. Victoria Mora

Meet Dr. Victoria Mora, president of the United World College-USA, one of the 18 schools in a global movement that makes education a force for peace and a sustainable future. Dr. Mora is a New Mexican whose passion for education was sparked by her mother and the bargain they stroke for 4-year-old Victoria to look at books while her siblings and her mom took their daily nap. Her family helped her nourish that desire to learn, and supported her so that she could become the first Latina to graduate with a PhD from Yale University. We talked about Victoria’s journey through higher education, and discussed how the narrative of the “first-generation” can be both inspiring and limiting, and she encourages us to pick and choose which stories we make our own. We also talked about how, regardless of their educational attainments, everyone deserves to be treated with respect. In celebration of UWC Day 2022, we discussed the theme: “Peace begins with us”, what it means to her, and how UWC aims to instill such values in the students that participate in the movement. We also talked about how a UWC education differs from the public high school education in the US, what the selection process is looking for in students, and the type of financial aid that is available to students all over the world! • 044: Your Multiculturalism is Your Superpower, with Dr. Alejandra Rodriguez Mielke

Meet Dr. Alejandra Rodriguez Mielke, a bilingual DEI coach and consultant helping individuals and organizations transcend personal biases and systemic barriers, to help build inclusive & equitable workplaces.Dr. Mielke is a native of Mexico, where she grew up and studied English language and literature to become a bilingual teacher. She then moved to Austin, TX to pursue a PhD in Language and Literacy studies from UT Texas, with the hope of learning how to develop fully bilingual curricula. Dr. Mielke worked with multiple students and teachers while pursuing her PhD, and her experience in the classroom led her to realize that minority students, especially Latinx students, were seen from a deficit-thinking point of view, and their multicultural and multilingual superpowers were seldom recognized as such. Dr. Mielke recognized that for Latinx students to succeed in school they needed to be connected to their roots and their heritage, and they needed to see themselves represented in the materials studied. After several years in the field, Alejandra became a learning and development expert. She is now a career coach, and works closely with Latinas who are looking to get to the next level. During this episode we talked about our multicultural superpowers, the need for connection and representation, and the concept of the “White Female Supervisor” and what to do when those supervisors are not supportive, as managers should be.
